Jipmer Celebrates Third Anniversary of Bone Marrow Transplant Program

JIPMER Striding Ahead...

Under the leadership of Professor Dr. SC Parija, Director, JIPMER, a new initiative had been started in May

to improve public awareness on health and disease which would include a series of interactive programs conducted on a fortnightly basis. These programs will focus on building knowledge among the general public as well as patients and their care-givers on prevention and treatment of common illnesses. The programs will be in Tamil and are planned for every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month between 3.30 and 5.00PM.

The 16th interactive session focusing on “Drug Addiction” what are the risk-factors? what is the treatment?

Was organised on 12th January ’16. A special skit in Tamil by Asiriyar Kalaikuzu, Pondicherry was also organised to put across the message.

The 17th interactive session focusing on “Early detection of childhood cancers” was organised on Tuesday, 9th February 2016. The Programme focused on creating awareness about early detection of childhood cancers. The idea was to help people to identify early signs and to seek medical help at the initial stage. They were also given an overview of treatment process.

The 18th Interactive session focusing on “Chronic Skin Diseases’ was conducted on Tuesday, 23th February ‘16.

The bone marrow transplant or blood & marrow transplant (BMT) program was started in JIPMER in the department of Medical

Oncology in January 2013. Third anniversary of the BMT program was observed by the department on 20th January 2016 and on this occasion a third BMT room was inaugurated by the director.

So far, till December 2015, the department has performed a total of 45 transplants, 39 autologous transplants and 6 allogeneic transplants for various indications.

JIPMER is the only government hospital in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu that is doing bone marrow transplant.

JIPMER observes ‘Sanitation Fortnight’

JIPMER observed the ‘Sanitation Fortnight’ from 16th to 29th February. 2016. This programme was

conducted as a part of ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ As a part of the programme; banners regarding

dos and don’ts were exhibited at prominent places. NSS volunteers from St Patrick’s school conducted a rally highlighting the importance of sanitation through placards. A special cleaning drive in Kendriya Vidyalaya campus was organised

Hospital Infection Control Committee contributed by conducting a session on hand and personal hygiene. Fogging of entire campus was conducted to keep campus mosquito free.

The programme concluded with a street play ‘Mirror’ to highlight importance of sanitation.

Interview with Dr C Adithan, Former Faculty (Research)

Dr. C. Adithan, Director of CIDRF at MGMCRI, Pondicherry, retired as Senior Professor & head of Department of

Clinical Pharmacology. He is having more than 26 years experience as Professor. He is instrumental in starting DM program in Clinical Pharmacology. He established the “Advance Centre for Pharmacogenomics Research” in India under the ICMR research grant. He was the first to report the genotype pattern of CYP2D6 and CYP2C9 in a Indian population. He has made an observation that the genotype pattern of South Indians is distinctly different from Caucasians and Orientals.

He was the past President of Indian Pharmacological Society (2007) and Southern Regional Indian Pharmacological Society (2003-2007). He also served as the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Pharmacology for 9 years (from 1992 to 2000). He is a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Indian Pharmacological Society (FIPS) and International Medical Science Academy (FIMSA).

He is a Member of Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (Govt. of India). Previously he was a member of Board of Studies of NTR University of Health Sciences (Vijayawada, A.P.) and presently at JSS University, Mysore. He is the Chairman of VCRC Institute Ethics Committee and past Member Secretary of IEC (Human studies) of JIPMER, Pondicherry.

He is a member of Faculty selection committees of AIIMS (New Delhi), PGIMER (Chandigarh), University of Delhi etc. He is also a member of expert committee / judge for awarding several research awards including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. He has travelled to Japan, France, England, Nepal and Malaysia in various assignments. He is a project reviewer of several funding agencies. He has more than 170 research papers and authored 3 books. He guided 10 PhD students.

Interview:1. How has your journey been in JIPMER?Memorable. Leaned, taught and enjoyed my stay

2.What was your motivation to focus on research?Childhood dream of discovering something and my fortunate opportunity to be with Prof. M. N.Ghosh and Dr. I. S. Gandhi (my MD guide)

3. What is your advise to young faculty who want to focus on research?Choose areas of research which will address the health problems of India.

Focus on the priority areas of National Health Programs. Attend workshops and learn the advanced techniques. Do not complain about the non-availability of recent and

costly equipment. Apply for extramural grants – it brings you prestige and

financial freedom for research

4. Any fond memories of JIPMER.Many. (1) Establishing the ICMR – JIPMER center for Advanced Research in Pharmacogenomics (2) Starting DM course (3) Receiving the Senior Faculty Research Award Oration of JIPMER, 2015

5. What changes you would like to see in your departmentPermanent Faculty posts in Dept. of Clinical Pharmacology should be created. Pharmacogenomics works in Departments should move forward in tune with recent advances in science

6. What changes in teaching practices/curriculum you felt was necessary.More integrated teaching and skill development which can fulfill the requirement of a basic doctor is needed.

7. What are your future plansI joined as Director of CIDRF at MGMCRI, Pondicherry. It has similar facility like JIPMER for research. In the next 5 years I wish to develop pharmacogenomics testing kits which will provide point of care services. Developing and validating algorithms for personalized therapy in cancer, psychiatry and cardiac illnesses.

24 hours Paid Pharmacy JIPMER started a 24 hour paid pharmacy within its premises to offer life saving emergency drugs at affordable prices. The pharmacy facilities can be availed by the patients of JIPMER, additionally the staff and students can also avail the facilities. Road Safety Rally

Faculty, Staff & Interns of RHC conducted a Road Safety Rally in the RHC service on 26th January.

They also gave short talks on safe driving practices especially use of helmets.

Mission Indradhanush Mission Indradhanush was held from 07.1.16 to 14.1.16.

National De-worming DayNational de-worming day was held on 10th February 2016. Totally 2561 children covered in RHC area and 1569 in UHC area.

International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day CelebratedDeapartment of Medical Oncology along with NGOs like CanKids, Jiv Daya Foundation celebrated International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. An awareness rally qas organised on the beach road. Also certain other programmes like ‘Light it up gold Taj Mahal’ were also organised to spread the awareness regarding childhood cancers and importance of mangement.

Kusum Sharma Award

Dr. Medha R., Associate Professor of Biochemistry was conferred with the Smt. Kusum Sharma Award for a Young Woman Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Research for the year 2015, at the 5th National Conference of the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences at New Delhi from 26-28 February 2016. She delivered the Smt. Kusum Sharma Memorial Oration on the topic entitled “Unravelling the psoriasis-cardiovascular disease link puzzle?”

Mrs M J Kumari, Vice Principal, College of Nursing received Best Educationist Award and the certificate of Excellence by the Economic for Health and Educational Growth, New Delhi held on 15.02.2016.

Dr Ramesh Kumar R Assistant Professor Pediatrics awarded Dr.  V.  Balagopal Raju Award (first prize) for original research paper (oral) titled “Hand Hygiene Education and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Monitoring on Compliance of Hand Hygiene and Impact on Health Care Associated Infections in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – A Prospective Open Labeled Sequential Before – After Period Study”

Dr. Ravindra B. K., 3rd year Senior Resident, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, won the first prize in the Intercollegiate PG Dissertation Presentation Competition] organized by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth , Puducherry on 22nd January 2016 for the paper titled “Population Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacogenomics of Tacrolimus in Renal Transplant Patients  – A Pilot Study”.

Mr Mourougan. S, Lecturer in Radiology (Medical Physics) awarded AMPI Best Paper Award for his presentation entitled “Study of the Dosimetric differences between Ir192 and Co60 sources of HDR Brachytherapy for Breast Interstitial Implant” during the XX Annual Conference of Association of Medical Physicists of India, TN&PY Chapter held on 6th & 7th February 2016 at TAG Auditorium, Anna University, Chennai.

Dr Suresh Gandhi, Assistant Professor, Dept of Orthopaedics won the prestigious ‘TNOA Prof Tom Xavier Hand Gold Medal’ at the Annual conference of the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association held at Ooty on 12th-14th February 2016 for his paper entitles “Major crush injury hand and forearm-Evaluation and Management.”

Dr Pramod Sagar BK, Junior Resident in the Department of Medicine has won the prestigious Dr J N Berry award at APICON – 2016 for his research paper titled “Comparison of two Anti Snake Venom protocols in Hemotoxic Snake bite: A Randomized Trial”

Dr. Palanivel C, Assistant Professor was awarded best paper for oral presentation titled ‘Does audit improve diabetes care in a primary care setting? A management tool to address health system gaps’ at 2nd International Seminar on Research for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) held at PIMS, Puducherry on 28th-29th January, 2016

Dr. Mallikarjun G. Utagi was awarded best poster in PESI-IAPSCON 2016 at Bhubaneswar, Odisha for topic on Comparative study of laparoscopic versus open appendicectomy in Paediatric Age group our experience.

Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was awarded ISO 9001:2015 by American International Accreditation Organization’s Bureau of Accredited Registrars. The certification was offered after assessing the quality of patient care, quality of research, qualification of faculty and availability of state of art equipment.

D was invited as a speaker and faculty for a CME at Pondicherry university on February 25th -26th , 2016 and delivered a talk on “Nanoparticles in cancer therapy and its future” at the national seminar on drug discovery and cancer therapy conducted by Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

9. Dr Jagdish Menon, Professor and Head, Dept of Orthopaedics delivered faculty lecture on “ The technique of bone biopsy” at the Annual conference of the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association held at Ooty on 12th-14th February 2016.

10. Dr. Sitanshu Kar, Associate Professor chaired a session on ‘Experiences from the World Diabetes Federation funded project to improve the prevention and care of NCDs in the Union Territory of Puducherry’ and also participated in a panel discussion on ‘Tackling the burden of NCDs with the involvement of medical students’.

11. Prof S Mahadevan, HOD Pediatrics moderated the panel discussion session on “ Snake envenomation and Scorpion sting envenomation in Children” at PEDICON 2016.

12. Debasis Gochhait Path - Conducted the Immunofluorescence workshop as Faculty/ Resource person organized by the Pondicherry Institute of Medical sciences (PIMS-Pondicherry) on 4th of March. Also attended the CME on Nephropathology at the same venue on 5th of March and organized a Quiz session for the participants/delegates.

13. Sadishkumar Kamalanathan Delivered a talk on “Diabetes in Young” in the Diabetes Summit-2016 conducted in Trivandrum on January 10, 2016. He also gave an interview to All India Radio-Puducherry for program Nalamai Vazha on diabetes on February 29, 2016.

14. Jayaprakash Sahoo delivered a talk on “Diabetes and tuberculosis: the deadly duo” at CME on ‘challenges to TB care in India’ in 5th February 2016 at PIMS, Pondicherry. He also have a guest lecture on “Approach to hypokalemia in endocrine perspective” at the 6th

He was invited as a guest speaker and spoke on "What can we learn from peripheral blood smear"

17. Debdatta Basu was invited to present the lead talk at the JIPMER Scientific Society monthly meeting on 22nd January 2016. He spoke on Our experience with bone marrow trephine biopsy.

28. Dr Preeti Kandasamy, Assistant Professor delivered a talk on “Management of ADHD” at Postgraduate CME conducted by Indian Psychiatric Society-Karnataka chapter on Jan 10th, 2016 at SDM Medical Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad.

29. Dr Vikas Menon, Assistant Professor conducted a workshop in collaboration with other national faculty on “Enhancing medication adherence using information technology” at the 68th Annual National Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society at Bhopal on Jan 22nd, 2016.

30. Dr Preeti Kandasamy, Assistant Professor chaired a session on “Psychiatric comorbidities in Paediatric Epilepsy” at a CME on Recent advances in Epilepsy, conducted by Department of Neurology, JIPMER on February 6th, 2016.

31. Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, conducted a clinical case discussion on “Abdomen cases” in MIST 2016 (Mahatma Gandhi Intense Surgical Training) – a PG CME Programme held at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Pondicherry on 20th & 21st January 2016.

32. Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, delivered a lecture on “The art of clinical presentation in an examination” and participated in Case Discussions in the CME -2016, organized under the auspices of Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry Chapter of A.S.I. & IMA Madurai Branch at the Madurai Medical College & Govt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai from 5th to 7th February 2016.

Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, delivered a guest lecture on “Importance of Documentation and Publication for Surgeons” in the 39th AMASI Skill course and Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS) held at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Pondicherry from 11th to 13th February 2016.

Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, delivered a guest lecture on “Consequences of splenectomy …… placing the problem in the perspective” in the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology & The Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT-USA) mid-term silver jubilee meeting held at Delhi from 26th to 27th February 2016.

35. Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, delivered guest lectures on “Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) – an overview”, “Esophagogastric junction tumors – current approach” and “How to do clinical presentation in a MS, DNB, MRCS and MCh Examination” in the Kerala Chapter peripheral meet 2016 of the Association of Surgeons of India held at Adoor, Kerala from 27th to 28th February 2016.

36. Dr. B.V.Sai Chandran attended 13th APMEC (Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference) at NUS (National University of Singapore). He made a presentation on " 2000 year old scripture 'THIRUKKURAL' - A tool for learning and practising cardiac surgery" on 15th Jan 2016 and also served as a Judge in a session for free communication on 'Curriculum' on 16th Jan 2016"

37. Dr. Sitanshu Kar, Associate Professor chaired a session on ‘Experiences from the World Diabetes Federation funded project to improve the prevention and care of NCDs in the Union Territory of Puducherry’ and also participated in a panel discussion on ‘Tackling the burden of NCDs with the involvement of medical students’ at 2nd International Seminar on Research for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) held at PIMS, Puducherry on 28th-29th January, 2016.

38. Dr. Bhawana A Badhe was an invited speaker in the Sri Ramachandra Pathology Annual Rapid Review Course (SPARRC 2016) organized by the department of Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and research Institute, Porur, Chennai, between 6th and 11th January 2016, where she conducted two sessions of “HEMATOLOGY SLIDE SEMINAR”

39. Dr. N. Siddaraju was an invited speaker in the Sri Ramachandra Pathology Annual Rapid Review Course

Dr. DM Thappa, Professor, attended 44th National Conference of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists (IADVL) – DERMACON 2016 at CODISSIA, Coimbatore held from 21st to 24th January 2016 as an invited faculty and delivered a talk on “Management of difficult cases of pemphigus”.

Dr. DM Thappa, Professor, attended 44th National Conference of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists (IADVL) – DERMACON 2016 at CODISSIA, Coimbatore held from 21st to 24th January 2016 as an invited faculty and chaired sessions on “Residents interactive session”, “A blue print on low IADVL can plan and execute the study find out the incidence and prevalence of vitiligo, psoriasis, and other conditions” and “Handling difficult patient calmly”.

Dr. DM Thappa, Professor, attended National seminar on the eve of National Science day 2016 on theme “To raise public appreciation on scientific issues for development of nation” organized by Department of Biotechnology, School of Life sciences, Pondicherry University University on 26th February, 2016 as an invited faculty and delivered a talk on “Scientific communications and innovations”.

43. Dr. DM Thappa, Professor, attended VI National Conference on Pemphigus and Pulse therapy- PULSE Chennai 2016 at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai on 27th and 28th February 2016 as an invited faculty and delivered a talk on “Patient related outcome in DCP pulse therapy”.
