General Comments :

The year began vith a -c.oto.l enrolment of 2 Masters Qualifying and 18 undergraduate student.s, of "1'7~1.om 14 were part--::.ime. In addition t:1.e Department had 3 candidates enrolled for the Degree of Ph.D. The under­graduate courses offered ti.1.is year were Sansl~rit. I, II, IHI, III and IIII-I, and Literary Persian. Seminars on Pal i were held for the Honours students. The Department records :;_us eratiJi;ude to Dr . S . A. A. Rizv i of the Departmen-t of .Asian Civilizo;tions for conduc·ting -the course in Literary Persian.

A course in spoken Silli'lalese was conducted for the benefit of a research student from the Research School of Pacific Studies .

Mr . Rajapa-C.irana has been offered a grc.nt by the A. R. .G.C. -::. o cn.rry out researcl1. on J.;l.1e Iiistorici-C.y of the Pn.li Ms. tradition in Ceylon, and will be awf1y on study leave fr om the 9-th of May , 19'/0 -~o the end of December 1970.
