AVID AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination”.

Students apply to be interviewed for the AVID program and commit to taking AVID as one of their elective classes.

Organizational and study skills are emphasized in the AVID elective.

AVID targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.

Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many, but not all, are from low-income or minority families.

AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track.

Page 26: JHS Tours of High School CTE Programs Chaperone Training

Why is it important for students to view these CTE programs before high school?

• Students more than ever are coming to high school equipped with information about what career area they will likely go into (thanks to the KUDER assessments that they are completing in 7th & 8th grade).

• Being able to explore their career clusters while still in high school is very important for today’s student.

(For example, students that indicate strong interest (or aptitude) in health sciences, may choose to start taking some Health Sciences classes in high school. This might allow them to pinpoint a specific medical profession and will drastically increase the chance of them going on to college to complete a program or learn a trade/skill in the field.)

When are we taking our 8th graders on the CTE Fieldtrip?

CUSD will be sponsoring this field trip from January 11 -13, 2012

Page 28: JHS Tours of High School CTE Programs Chaperone Training

What is the teacher’s role while chaperoning this field trip?

The main role for the chaperones is to monitor the students’ behavior and to encourage attentiveness to each program presentation. Next are the expectations and guidelines that should be reviewed with the students before the trip.

Page 29: JHS Tours of High School CTE Programs Chaperone Training

While on the field trip, students are expected to:

• Conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times

• Follow all bus rules when traveling to and from the high school

• Follow directions from all adults• Wear assigned nametags at all times• Stay with assigned teacher and group at all times• Be attentive listeners during the CTE career rotations• Remember you are guests on the high school campus

and must act accordingly

Field trip Checklist

• Logistical Information Sheet which outlines the dates, times, name tags, attendance procedures

• Folder containing all students’ permission slips for which the chaperone is responsible

• Identification of any students who will need to take medicines or visit the nurse on the trip

• The timeline of the tours (including start and end times of each rotation as well as the order of the CTE programs to be seen).

• Map of the school
