What happened to the possessions thatthe Jews left behind during and after theHolocaust? Apartments, furniture, bedlinens, kitchenware, cars, cash, bankaccounts (in Germany and abroad), andof course the offices, the stores, thefactories, etc. The appropriation ofassets from German Jews during theThird Reich benefited virtually everyother German citizen. It was not theGestapo who invaded Jewish homes inorder to confiscate all property, frombank accounts to bed linens - it was theGerman tax officials. While larger assetswent to the tax offices, smaller assetsand goods were sold to friends andneighbours in public auctions of "Non-Aryan" property. Acclaimed filmmakerMichael Verhoeven's documentarydocuments the bizarre competition thatdeveloped between bureaucrats as tohow to organize the robbery of the Jewsprior to their deportation and death.Until just several years ago, thedocuments proving this plannedexpropriation were lost, destroyed orhidden away. This excellent film was aninternational success, received manyprizes and was nominated for anAcademy Award as best foreignlanguage film.

HARLAN IN THE SHADOW OF JEW SÜSS

Harlan- Im Schatten von Jud SüssThough almost forgotten today, Veit Harlan wasone of Nazi Germany’s most notoriousfilmmakers. Millions all across occupied Europesaw his films, the most perfidious of which wasthe treacherous anti-Semitic propaganda filmJew Süss (Jud Süss)—required viewing for allSS members. As Joseph Goebbels’ top directorhe was an unrepentant and blindly obsessivecraftsman, and was also the only artist from theNazi era to be charged with war crimes. Withnever-before-seen archival footage, unearthedfilm excerpts, rare home movies and newinterviews, (including Christine Kubrick, wife oflegendary director Stanley Kubrick) this powerfuldocumentary is indeed a searing portrait of thecontroversial filmmaker and an eye-openingexamination of World War II film history. But italso shows how Veit Harlan’s family—especiallythe youngest generation—struggles even todaywith the dark myth of his artistic immorality. It’sthe story of a German family from the ThirdReich to the present, one that is marked byreckoning, denial and liberation.

SAVIORS IN THE NIGHT Unter BauernThe mesmerizing true feature filmof a Jewish family that foundhaven with courageousWestphalian farmers during WW II.Based on the memories of MargaSpiegel, we discover howcourageous farmers in southernMünsterland hid her, her husbandMenne and their little daughterKarin from 1943 until 1945, thussaving them from deportation tothe extermination camps in theEast. The film tells this story ofsurvival with a sense for theabsurd in daily life and not withoutthe typical Westphalian humour.Without reservation, the farmersoffer the refugees their protection. That this turns them into heroeswould never occur to them. Theyare used to weathering evendangerous situations somehow, guided only by their instinct andcentury-old code of ethics. Theyrisk their own lives, and, ifnecessary, even that of theirfamilies. There is never adiscussion about friendship, reliability and humanity. Saviors in the Night is an uplifting andlife-affirming story which honoursthese voiceless heroes.

LOST ISLANDSIim Avudim--Lost Islands is a humorousdrama which focuses on a largeand high-spirited working classfamily struggling with maritalfidelity, sibling jealousy and teenanguish. The early 1980s arethe backdrop of thisautobiographical film which wasIsrael’s biggest box officesuccess in 2008. Twin brothersErez and Ofer are two membersof this unique yet typical familywho seem opposite in everyway. Happily wreaking havoc andchasing girls in a still rathernaïve Israel, they fall in lovewith the same free-spirited girlsetting off a rivalry that pullsthem apart.
