SEVERAL workers at UK-basedlow cost carrier easyJet have been“disciplined” after allowing abusinessman to fly from Londonto Amsterdam using the passportof his two-year-old daughter. Mark Coshever picked up thewrong passport when leavinghome and didn’t realise until hisflight from Luton touched down. Airport staff had examined thedocument twice without noticingit contained a toddler’s photo.

WHEN airport charges rise, sometimes other nearbybusinesses can benefit too. Near Sydney Airport there’s aparking station called “Park andFly” which launched several yearsago and offered a cost-effectivealternative to the prohibitivelyexpensive airport parking. The service originally cost $13per day, but the price has risensteadily with strong demand, withthe latest increase making it now$20 per day, up more than 50%. At least they haven’t blamed theincreases on high fuel prices.

TRAVELPORT, formerly knownas Cendant Travel DistributionServices, has today reported aUS$1.1b second quarter loss in itsfirst trading statement since beingsold into a separate company. The result confirms thedisappointing price achieved in thesale, with most of the loss due to a“non-cash impairment charge” ofUS$1.2b arising from the differencebetween the price at which it wassold and the “historical carryingvalue of Travelport’s net assets”. There were also a number of one-off costs associated with the sale, and excluding all these extra itemsthe firm’s operating income wouldhave been US$107m for the period. Revenue from Galileo and GTA

US$1.1b loss for Travelportwas up $16m to $485m, resultingfrom growth in gross bookingsdespite a decline in subscriberincome from Galileo customers. The firm said 100% of its agencycustomers in the US had opted intoits “Content Continuity” program. In the consumer division revenuewas $221m, up 13%, with grossonline bookings for US brandsOrbitz and CheapTickets growingby 40% during the quarter.
