The Loggerhead Sea Turtle – Did you know?Loggerhead Sea Turtles are graceful saltwater reptiles well adapted to life in the ocean. The Loggerhead is named for

its very large head which resembles a log of wood. Adults weigh up to 500 pounds and can grow to a length of more

than 1 metre. They are long-lived animals and can live for 50 years or more in the wild.

Loggerheads are found worldwide, mainly in temperate seas as they don’t like very cold water. They live near the

shore and only come onto the beach to nest. They are carnivores, meaning they eat other animals like jellyfish and

crabs which they can crush with their powerful jaws.

Loggerheads mate every two or three years. They come ashore to build their nests and lay their eggs. The eggs are

white and about the size of ping-pong balls. Temperature plays a role in deciding the gender of the hatchlings or baby

turtles. A cooler nest will produce more males while a warmer one will produce more females.

Hatchlings emerge from under the sand at night and crawl towards the brightest point, which on a natural beach is

always towards the sea. Artificial lights confuse hatchlings and they will sometimes head towards houses, parking lots

or roads by mistake, where they often die.

Baby loggerheads are eaten by sharks, crabs, birds and fish. They soon become too big for most of these predators,

although sharks will prey on them throughout their lives. Loggerheads have long been hunted by humans for their eggs

and for leather, although turtle hunting is now illegal in many parts of the world. In coastal areas, sea turtles are fre-

quently killed by boats. Loggerheads also get caught up in fish nets and can die from eating plastic bags which they

mistake for jellyfish.

Greece is very lucky to have one of Europe’s only breeding grounds for Loggerhead Turtles. In Europe the Loggerhead

is an endangered species. From May to August, Loggerheads nest on the Ionian Islands and Crete. Each year, volun-

teers guard the nesting beaches every night to protect the baby turtles and educate tourists so that they don’t litter

and throw away plastic bags.
