“GO” INTIATIVE – The FINAL, Week #6

November 13 to 19 - Share the Gospel with them and how they can know Jesus personally.

SHARE IT - Connecting With Each Other

Have each person in your group write down three from his or her defining moments life. (You'll want to have pens and paper on hand for those who need it.) These

can include an illness or injury, a disappointment, an accomplishment, or a momentschallenge. Be sure to give everyone enough time to really think the question through and write down their responses.

Have each person share one of the they have written down. “defining moments”

Then have each person briefly explain why that event was important. Finish the exercise by asking what this might have “defining moment”

communicated to others.

GOING DEEPER INTO SCRIPTURE – JOHN 14:1-11

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many

rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you

are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my

Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us

the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do

not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to

you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

One of the most comforting passages in the entire Bible and one of the most quoted as well. Many questions are raised and answered in just a few short verses. Jesus begins by recognizing the disciples’ belief in the Father but then makes an astounding statement, “You believe in God, believe also in me.” This one statement forever links Jesus with the Father as inseparable for belief and practice. Jesus then, with incredible clarity, proceeds to debunk any and every belief system then, now, and ever as false if they teach heaven’s access apart from Him. He alone provides access to the Father and to all the glory of heaven…there is ONLY 1 Way to Heaven: JESUS! This is a

for the disciples and for all believers today! “defining moment”

1. Long for Heaven: Jesus forever 2. You CAN know how to get to Heaven 3. Obtain Heaven through Jesus only 4. Believe Jesus’s miracles as evidence

Application Questions

Why is it so important to believe in both the Father and in Jesus together?

In your own words explain what exactly Jesus meant when He said that He is the way, the truth, and the life?

Have these truths affected the 3 W’s in your life? How? Have these truths provided

a in your life? “defining moment”

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all

people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for

one another.”

John 13:34-35

John 14:1-11

6 Reasons Why all

Roads DO NOT

Lead to Heaven:

1) The Supreme Ruler of

the universe says clearly

that Jesus is the only way,

John 3:17-19

2) If all roads lead to

heaven, then Christianity

is not meaningful, Matthew 7:14

3) If all roads lead to

heaven, then Jesus is a fool,

fake, and liar, 1 Peter 3:18

4) Believing all roads lead

to heaven disregards God’s

holiness and the purity of

heaven, Romans 3;23; John

3:1-21

5) Believing all roads lead

to heaven mocks God’s

justice, Deuteronomy 32:4

6) Believing all roads lead

to heaven rejects God’s

inconceivable love, 1 John

4:8; Romans 5:8; 2 Pt 3:9

This Week’s

Homework:

Use your sermon notes from

this week’s message to guide your prayers for God’s church.

Write out a prayer list of people that you will commit to pray for this month (family, friends, co-workers).

Put your list in a place that you will see on a daily basis as a reminder to pray.

NEXT STEPS – APPLYING SCRIPTURE In a Time magazine cover article titled, “Does Heaven exist?” people were asked various questions about heaven. Here are two questions and responses: Do you believe in the existence of heaven, where people will live forever with God after they die? 81% said “yes”, 13% said “no”. Where do you believe you will go when you die? 68% said “heaven”, 3% said “hell”. The fact of a literal place called heaven permeates the pages of God’s Word. Heaven occurs about 550 times in the Bible. It is a general word that describes three different “heavens” that exist. The first heaven is the atmospheric heaven, the abode of the birds. The second heaven is the stellar or celestial heaven, the home of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. The third heaven is the divine heaven, the dwelling place of God. In John 14:1-11 Jesus clearly states He is there preparing a place right now for His followers so that where He is there we may be also. Jesus, right this moment, is in that literal place called heaven.

Here are Six Reasons why we believe heaven is a literal place that exists right now: 1. Jesus called heaven “My Father’s house” and said He was going there to prepare a place for us, John 14:1-3.

According to Jesus, heaven is a real place! 2. Heaven is described as a literal place, a city, with walls, gates, foundation, streets, Revelation 21:9-22:5. 3. Jesus taught that heaven is the present abode or dwelling place of God, Matthew 10:32-33. 4. The apostle Paul visited the “third heaven” where God dwells, 2 Corinthians 12:2. 5. The true citizenship of every true Christian is in heaven, Philippians 3:20-21. You can’t have legitimate

citizenship in a place that doesn’t exist. 6. Heaven is called our heavenly homeland and a city, Hebrews 11:16.

Paul described heaven for us in 1 Corinthians 2:9 when he said, “…what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” Jesus, right now, is preparing an unimaginable place for each of His followers in a literal place. It is a prepared place for a prepared people. Are you prepared to go there (Hebrews 9:27)? Can you articulate how we can know for certain that when our body dies we will go to heaven (1 John 5:13)? What is the one sin that keeps someone out of heaven (John 3:18)? Who is the one and only person in heaven we should be so looking forward to seeing (Psalm73:25; John 14:3)?

PRAYER – TALK IT OVER WITH GOD

MEMORIZE – COMMITTING SCRIPTURE TO HEART

During this series in the Gospel of John spend time committing these passages to heart from week to week to week. Consider writing the texts on postcards and placing them where you will see them often (e.g. bathroom mirror, car, office, desk). Use the Bible translation that you use the most.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the

truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:1-6

Lord, thank you that right now you are preparing a place just for me so that where you are there I may be also, John 14:2-3

Lord, thank you that you are the way, the truth, and the life and that only through you I can know the Father, John 14:6

Lord, thank you that in heaven there will be no more death, mourning, crying, and pain and that everything will be new, Revelation 21:4-5
