In today’s passage, it appears that Jesus had made advance arrangements to partake of the Passover meal alone with his disciples at the home of another of his followers. This secret preparation may have been for the purpose of preventing Judas from carrying out his betrayal before the proper time in God’s plan. When Jesus pointed out that one who was eating with him would betray him (Matthew 26:23), his statement must have been a big shock to his disciples. Not only did they apparently not suspect anyone of turning against Jesus, but in their culture taking hostile action against someone one had just eaten with was unthinkable.

In the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus asked his disciples to pray with him, he was facing his toughest challenges: imminent betrayal, mocking, torture, and an incredibly painful execution. Yet he didn’t just ask his disciples to pray for him. He wanted them to pray for themselves. He knew how hard it was going to be for them to stay true to him, and he wanted them to seek the Father’s help in that effort.

It should be noted that “all the disciples deserted him and fled” (Matthew 26:56).

It’s important to say the Bible Point just as it’s written in each activity. Repeating the Bible Point over and over throughout the lesson will help kids remember it and apply it to their lives.

Welcome Timen Welcome!SUPPLIES: “Butterfly Name Tags” handout (p. 26), markers, tape or safety pins• Bend down and make eye contact with children as they arrive.• Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile.• Thank each child for coming to class today.• As children arrive, ask them about last week’s “Today I Learned…” activities. Use

questions such as “How did you praise Jesus?” and “Did your family celebrate Jesus?”• Say: Today we’re going to learn that Jesus died and came back to life.• Hand out the butterfly name tags children made in Lesson 1, and help children attach

the name tags to their clothing. If some of the name tags were damaged or if some of the children weren’t in class that week, have them make new name tags using the photocopiable patterns.

• Direct children to the Let’s Get Started activities you’ve set up.

Let’s Get StartedSet up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After

you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity.Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and direct children’s

conversation toward today’s lesson. Ask questions such as “What do you do when a friend hurts your feelings?” or “What special things do you like to do with your friends?”

n Option 1: Last SupperSUPPLIES: jam, crackers, paper plate, bowl, juice or water, cups, napkins, plastic knives

Set out crackers, paper cups, plastic knives, a paper plate, a bowl of jam, napkins, and a pitcher of juice or water. Tell children that today they’ll share a special snack. Have children spread jam on the crackers and place the crackers on the paper plate. Let children pour the juice into cups and then set the cups on a table. Mention that in today’s Bible story, they’ll hear about a time Jesus shared a special meal with his friends. Remind children that Jesus died and came back to life because he loves us so much. Set the treats aside for use later in the lesson.

n Option 2: Pillow PalsSUPPLIES: white paper lunch sacks, newspaper, crayons, ribbon

Set out crayons, newspaper, white paper lunch sacks, the butterfly stamp and ink pad, and 6-inch lengths of ribbon. Let children decorate the paper sacks and then stuff them with crumpled newspaper to look like pillows. Help children gather the open ends of the sacks and tie them with ribbons. As children

work, ask questions such as “Is it hard to stay awake late at night?” or “When do you get sleepy?” Explain that Jesus’ best friends fell asleep when Jesus went to pray.

If you don’t choose this option, you’ll need to provide crackers and juice for the “Setting the Stage” activity.

n Option 3: Fred’s FriendsSUPPLIES: none

Choose one child to be Fred, and have him or her stand facing the wall. Have the other children be Fred’s Friends and stand in a semicircle. Tell children that when Fred says, “Go,” Fred’s Friends may begin sneaking to the other side of the room. If one of Fred’s Friends touches the opposite wall, he or she becomes Fred. But if Fred turns around and says, “Find Fred’s Friends!” everyone must freeze in place. As children play, explain that Jesus’ friends left him when he needed them most.

When everyone has arrived and you’re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they’re doing and get ready to clean up.

n Pick Up Our ToysSUPPLIES: CD player

Lead children in singing “Pick Up Our Toys” (track 2) with the CD to the tune of “Skip to My Lou.” Encourage the children to sing along as they help clean up the room.

If you want to include the names of all the children in your class, sing the song without the CD and repeat the naming section. If you

choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week.

We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toysAnd put them all away.

There’s [name] picking up toys. There’s [name] picking up toys. There’s [name] picking up toys,Putting them all away.

(Repeat.)

Bible Story Timen Setting the StageSUPPLIES: construction paper, crayons, tablecloth, napkins, basket or bag, cups of juice and plate of crackers from Option 1

Tell the children you’ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap your hands, children are to stop what they’re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Encourage children to respond quickly so you’ll have time for all the fun activities you’ve planned.

Before class, place a folded tablecloth (or two if you will be using two tables) and napkins in a basket or bag. Gather the children in a circle and say: Today we’re going

If you don’t do Option 2, make enough paper pillows for each child to have one. Children will be using the paper pillows in the “Hear and Tell the Bible Story” activity.

Make sure to return Learning Lab items back to the box when you’re done using them so they can be used in future lessons!

to prepare a special meal. Some of you already helped make the food we’ll eat. Now we’ll set the table and get everything ready.

Get out the basket or bag. Say: Raise your hand if you’ve helped your mom or dad get ready for a special meal or party.

Ask: • What was the special meal for? (Christmas; Easter; Thanksgiving; someone’s birthday; when Grandma came over.)

• How did you help prepare for it? (I set the table; I tossed the salad; I put the rolls and drinks on the table.)

Say: It sounds like you’re good helpers! Jesus’ friends were helpers, too. They prepared a special meal to share with Jesus. Let’s set our table as if Jesus were joining us.

Give each child a large sheet of construction paper. Set out crayons, and have children decorate the papers to make place mats. Take a sheet of construction paper and write “Jesus” at the top, and tell children that Jesus will have a special place at the table, too.

Choose two helpers to spread the tablecloth on the table. Let children set their place mats around the table. (Be sure to set out the “Jesus” place mat.) Then have children place a napkin and a cup of juice at each place setting. Set out the plate of crackers children prepared in Option 1.

Say: With everyone’s help, we’ve prepared a wonderful table! When we enjoy our snack, we can remember that Jesus died and came back to life. Now let’s get ready to hear about the special meal Jesus shared with his friends.

n Bible Song and Prayer TimeSUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, basket or box, CD player

Before class, make surprise cards for the activity by cutting construction paper into 2x6-inch slips. Prepare a surprise card for each child plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and then stamp the butterfly stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Bookmark Matthew 26:17-30, 36-56 in the Bible you’ll be using.

Have the children sit in a circle. Say: Now it’s time to choose a Bible person to bring me the Bible marked with today’s Bible story. As we sing our Bible song, I’ll pass out the surprise cards. Don’t look inside your surprise card until the song is over.

Lead the children in singing “Read God’s Book” (track 3) with the CD to the tune of “The Muffin Man.” As you sing, pass out the folded surprise cards.

Now it’s time to read God’s book,Read God’s book, read God’s book.Now it’s time to read God’s book.Let’s hear a Bible story.

Now it’s time to read God’s book,Read God’s book, read God’s book.Not it’s time to read God’s book.Let’s hear a Bible story.

(Repeat.)

Keep track of which children have had a turn to be the Bible person, and make sure everyone gets a chance throughout the quarter. If necessary, create extra jobs (such as card collector) so all children have a chance to feel important.

track 3

Lesson 4

62 Hands-On Bible Curriculum—Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who finds the butterfly stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today.

Identify the Bible person, and then have the rest of the children clap for him or her. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place and show children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down.

Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week, we’ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we’re all learning that Jesus died and came back to life.

Let’s say a special prayer now and thank God for sending Jesus to us. I’ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, “Thank you, God, for sending Jesus.”

Pass around the basket or box. When you’ve collected everyone’s surprise card, set the basket aside and pick up the Bible. Lead the children in this prayer. God, thank you for the Bible and all the stories in it. Teach us today that Jesus died and came back to life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

n Hear and Tell the Bible StorySUPPLIES: Bible, paper pillows from Option 2, CD player

Have children sit around you. Bring out the Jesus’ Death and Resurrection book, and show children the first two pictures. Say: Last week we heard how Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Ask: What did the people do as Jesus rode by? (They shouted “hosanna”; they put their coats in the street; they waved palm branches.)

Say: The people did all these things to praise Jesus. Our Bible verse says: For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, Jesus. One way we can thank God for this gift is to praise Jesus. To help us remember how good it is to praise Jesus, let’s sing a song.

Lead children in singing “God Loved the World So Much” (adapted from John 3:16a) (track 6) to the tune of “Michael, Row the Boat Ashore” with the CD.

For God loved the world so much,Hallelujah,That he gave his one and onlySon, Jesus.(Repeat.)

Open the Bible to the book of Matthew. Point to the Bible and say: Today’s story is from the book of Matthew in the Bible. Our book shows us pictures of our Bible story. We’ll hear what Jesus did while he was in Jerusalem. First, you’ll need your paper pillows. Distribute the paper pillows from Option 2. When you hear the word disciples, lay your head on your pillow and close your eyes for a few seconds. Remember, the disciples were Jesus’ closest friends.

Hold the book so children can see the third picture. Play “A Special Meal” (track 7) on the CD. When you hear the chime, turn the page. When the track ends, turn off the CD player.

Jesus’ Last Supper and Arrest

63Hands-On Bible Curriculum—Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

• What did Jesus eat with his friends? (Passover supper; a special meal; bread and wine.)

• Which of Jesus’ friends turned against him? (Judas.)• What did Jesus’ friends do that made him so sad? (They fell asleep when

he wanted them to stay awake; they didn’t show they cared about him.)• What happened to Jesus after he’d finished praying? (Men came and

arrested him; he was taken away; Judas betrayed him.)Say: Jesus shared a special meal with his friends because he loved them.

Jesus wanted his friends to remember him whenever they shared that special meal. It’s important for us to remember Jesus, too. Let’s share our special meal and remember that Jesus died and came back to life.

Close the Jesus’ Death and Resurrection book, and return it to your Learning Lab.

n Do the Bible StorySUPPLIES: CD player, snack from Option 1

Say: Let’s share the meal we’ve prepared and remember Jesus, just as he told the disciples to do. Have children take their places at the table. Distribute the crackers, and then ask:

• What things do you remember about Jesus? (That he died and came back to life; that God loved us so much he sent us Jesus.)

• Why is it important to remember Jesus? (Because he loves us; because he’s God’s Son.)

Say: Before we eat, let’s remember Jesus in prayer and thank him for what he’s done. Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for coming to earth to teach us about God’s love. Thank you for this food, and help us to remember that you died and came back to life. In your name we pray, amen.

When everyone has had the snack, say: Jesus and his friends ended their special meal with a song. Let’s sing a song to remind us that Jesus died and came back to life. Teach children the words to “I’ll Remember” (track 8), and then lead them in singing it to the tune of “Jesus Loves Me” with the CD.

Jesus said, “Remember me”;Then he died for you and me.I know Jesus is God’s Son.I’ll remember what he’s done.

Yes, I’ll remember. (Nod head and tap temple.)Yes, I’ll remember. (Nod head and tap temple.)Yes, I’ll remember (nod head and tap temple)That Jesus died for me. (Touch opposite palms with middle fingers to sign “Jesus,”

and then point to self.)

Jesus is alive today. He rose again on the third day.He watches me from heaven above.I’ll remember his great love.

Yes, I’ll remember. (Nod head and tap temple.)Yes, I’ll remember. (Nod head and tap temple.)Yes, I’ll remember (nod head and tap temple)That Jesus is alive. (Touch opposite palms with middle fingers to sign “Jesus.”)

Say: Let’s all hop like kangaroos over to our story area. I think Pockets might be home today. We can see if she knows about the special meal that helps us remember Jesus.

Closingn A Meal to RememberSUPPLIES: postcard

Before class, place a postcard in Pockets’ pouch. The postcard may be from any city, amusement park, or vacation spot.

Bring out Pockets the Kangaroo, and go through the following script. When you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight.

Pockets: Hi, everybody!

Teacher: Good morning, Pockets. (Motions to postcard.) It looks like you’ve brought something to show us today.

Pockets: Yep, I sure did. Will you take it out of my pouch and hold it up so all the children can see it?

Teacher: Sure. (Takes postcard from the pouch.) Oh, it’s a postcard.

Pockets: Uh-huh. It’s a souvenir from our family’s vacation last year. Whenever I look at it, I remember all the fun we had together.

Teacher: You know, Pockets, today we’ve been learning that Jesus wanted his disciples to remember him, too.

Pockets: Did he give them a postcard?

Teacher: (Laughs.) No, he gave them something better. He had a special meal with his friends, and told them that whenever they had that same special meal, they were to remember him.

Pockets: Did they do it? Did they have the special meal to remember Jesus?

Teacher: They sure did. In fact, we still have that special meal to remember Jesus today. It’s called the Last Supper. When we have the Last Supper together, we remember that Jesus died and came back to life.

Pockets: That’s much better than a postcard. And people everywhere can remember Jesus when they celebrate the Last Supper. That’s neat! I’m going to send a postcard to my grandma to ask if she knows about the Last Supper. See you next week!

n Remembering Jesus’ LoveSUPPLIES: 2 sticky notes for each child, crayons

Gather the children together in a circle.Say: Sometimes we need help remembering important things. There may

be times when your mom and dad remind you to pick up your toys or say thank you for a gift. Grownups often use paper sticky notes like these to help them remember things.

Show the children the sticky notes and ask: • What are some important things to remember? (To go to church; a friend’s birthday; to pray before a meal; to do a job we promised we would do.)

• What things about Jesus are important to remember? (He died for our sins; he loves us; he is God’s Son.)

Say: Jesus died and came back to life. He wants us to remember how much he loves us. He showed his love when he died on the cross and came back to life again. Give each of the kids a small sticky note and a crayon, and then ask: • What can you draw on this sticky note to help you remember that Jesus loves you? (A heart; a smiley face.)

• Why is it important to remember Jesus loves you? (So that I can tell him that I love him, too; so that I can thank him.)

Let the children share their ideas, and then have them draw a simple heart shape. Give the children another sticky note and ask: • What can you draw to remember that Jesus died on the cross for you? (A cross; another heart.)

• Why should you remember that Jesus died for you? (So that I can thank him; so that I can know I’m forgiven; because it was such a wonderful thing he did for me.)

Let the kids share their ideas, and then have children draw a simple cross on their sticky notes.

Say: You can take your sticky notes home and put them on the refrigerator, or a mirror, or anywhere you will see them. Every time you walk past your reminder, you can say thank you to Jesus that he died and came back to life.

Ask children to look at their sticky notes as you lead in a closing prayer, thanking Jesus for his great love.

n Lively Learning: Are You Sleeping?Form two groups, the Sleepers and the Wakers. Have the Sleepers lie down on the floor and pretend to

sleep. Lead the Wakers in singing “Are You Sleeping?” to the tune of “Frère Jacques” without the CD. As the Wakers sing, have them tiptoe and gently try to “wake up” the Sleepers. At the end of the song, have the Sleepers shake their heads and stretch their arms. Then switch roles and play again.

Are you sleeping,Are you sleeping,Peter, James, and John,Peter, James, and John?

Jesus asked them that day,“Please keep watch as I pray.”They could not,They could not.

n Make to Take: Sleepy EyesMake photocopies of the “Are You Sleeping?” handout (p. 68). Have children color the

faces and the eyes on the eye strips. Help children cut off the eye strips and then cut out the eye circles on the faces. Show children how to cut slits on the sides of the paper faces then slide the eye strips through the slits so the eyes show behind the eyeholes. Demonstrate how to slide the strip back and forth to change the eyes from awake to asleep.

n Treat to Eat: Sweet BreadGive each child a paper cup containing two spoonfuls of jam. Set out cubes of angel

food cake, and allow children to dip the cubes in their jam. Explain that Jesus and his friends shared bread and fruit at their special meal. Remind children that we celebrate this special meal because Jesus died and came back to life.

n Story Picture: A Special MealHand each child a photocopy of the “Today I Learned…” handout. Have children color the picture

with crayons and glue bits of white facial tissue to Jesus’ robe. As children work, tell them that Jesus said to remember him when we eat and drink.

For Extra Time If you have a long class time or want to add additional elements to your lesson, try one of the following activities.

See page 5.

Verse to LearnFor God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son (adapted from John 3:16).

Ask Me...l What did Jesus tell his disciples at the Passover meal?

l Why is it important to remember Jesus?

l What can our family do to help us remember Jesus?

Family Funl Prepare a special “Remembering Meal” and have each

family member take part in the preparations. Children may contribute by fixing beverages, tearing lettuce for a salad, or setting the table. Before the meal, pray together and have each person thank God for sending Jesus. During the meal, go around the table and have each person complete the sentence, “I’ll never forget the time that…” Then tell about a kind thing another family member has done.

Today your child learned that Jesus died and came back to life. Children heard about a special meal Jesus shared with his friends. They shared their own special meal to remember Jesus and how much he loves us.
