Application programme

The PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year Competition is part of the Jersey Music Service’s provision of opportunities for young musicians in Jersey. It incorporates the well established sectional competitions for strings, woodwind, piano, brass, vocal and percussion.

Competition structureThe competition has two stages; the heats and the final. The six sectional competitions act as heats, which are held at the end of January. Each sectional heat will have one winner. The winner of each sectional competition will be invited to go forward to the final, held in March, at the Jersey Opera House.

Prizes

The heats• Each heat winner will be awarded a trophy and a replica, and a cheque for £100

which will be presented at the final.

• All competitors will be awarded certificates.

• All competitors may also be offered further non-competitive performance opportunities during the year.

The final The overall winner will receive:

• The 2016 PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year Trophy.

• A cheque for £200.

• An invitation to give a short performance at the final of the following year’s competition.

In addition, the Jersey Symphony Orchestra Award will go to one of the finalists whose performance demonstrates potential to benefit from a structured programme of participation with the JSO over the following year. The Award consists of a monetary prize of £200 to be spent by the winner on approved expenditure relating to the development of their musical studies.

PwC Jersey Young Musician of the YearDates

Eligibility1 With the exception of the previous

year’s competition winner, all musicians residing in Jersey under the age of 19 years on 1 September 2015 and who have reached approximately Grade VI standard of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music / Trinity College examinations are eligible to enter this competition.

2 Entrants must obtain permission from their instrumental teacher.

Performance requirements3 All competitors must perform at

the time which is specified on the acknowledgement of the application, and participants who are not available at that time may be disqualified by the organisers.

4 Competitors must be available for both stages of the competition and it’s a requirement that competitors attend the complete stage of the competition at which they perform.

5 Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Vocal competitors are required to perform with piano accompaniment where indicated in the score, and all entrants in these sections are required to use the official accompanists only.

6 A good piano will be available and music stands will be provided at each venue.

7 Accompanists will be assigned to the various sections by the organisers following the enrolment date.

8 Brass, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion competitors will be solely responsible for tuning their own instrument.

Heats9 Competitors will be required to perform

two or more contrasting compositions, the combined duration of which should not exceed eight minutes. Music specified on the entry form at the time of the application must be performed in the competition.

10 Rehearsals with the official accompanists will be held during the following times:

Friday 22 January 2016: evening

Saturday 23 January 2016: am/pm

Sunday 24 January 2016: am/pm

In addition, there will be a practice session for piano contestants on the above dates also.

Adequate notice and details of schedules will be given on acknowledgement of applications.

Final11 Competitors will be required to perform

a contrasting programme of two or more compositions, the duration of which must not exceed a total of twelve minutes.

As there are only seven weeks between the heats and the final, the music to be played must be specified immediately following qualification for the final and must then be performed in the final.

Entry submissions12 All submissions, whether personal or

postal, must include the completed application form, entry fee of £10.00, a copy of the solo part and an original copy of the piano score for the official accompanist. Where original piano parts are required prior to the competition, copies may be submitted. However, original piano parts must be used during the performance. Anyone found contravening this rule will be disqualified.

All music will be retained by the organisers until the completion of the competition.

Enrolment in person13 Applications may be submitted in

person between 3.30pm and 4.15pm on Tuesday 20 October 2015 at the Jersey Music Service rehearsal rooms at Fort Regent.

Enrolment by post14 Postal applications may be sent to the

Vice Principal of Jersey Music Service, Education, Sport & Culture, PO Box 142, St Saviour, Jersey, JE4 8QJ, to arrive no later than Monday 19 October 2015.

General regulations15 Photocopies of solo parts may be

provided for use by the adjudicator(s), however the original music must be used in performance. Anyone found contravening this rule will be disqualified.

16 Competitors may enter only one of the sectional competitions.

17 Competitors will receive written confirmation of acceptance after the music and application forms, etc. have been received, giving details of the time they’ll be required to perform.

18 All stages of the competition will be open to the general public.

19 The adjudicating panels’ decisions and judgements will be final.

20 Jersey Music Service reserves the right to allow any stage of the competition to be broadcast or televised and accordingly pass on competitors’ contact details to local media for possible interviews related to the competition.

21 Jersey Music Service reserves the right to cancel any of the competition heats if an insufficient number of applications are received.

22 Competitors may enter only one of the PwC Jersey Musician of the Year Competitions on an instrument but may enter both competitions if they are eligible and are entering on different instruments.

Enrolments will not be accepted unless they comply with all of the above rules.

Note:

Cameras or recording equipment of any kind will not be allowed during any part of the competition.
