JEFFERSON COLLEGE IS SMOKE-FREE, TOBACCO-FREE & ALCOHOL-FREE: A HEALTHY PLACE TO LEARN, LIVE, & WORK

Page 2: JEFFERSON COLLEGE IS SMOKE-FREE, TOBACCO-FREE & …

The alignment of the sun, moon & earth that creates a solar eclipse, is called a syzygy. The Ancient Greek meaning of this word is “yoked together,” and similarly, we as humans are all yoked together on this planet. The breath-taking diversity of our common human experience is reflected in this year’s PACE calendar, bringing both familiar favorites and new cultures to explore.

Every one of us has a unique voice, a story, a message to share. This year, PACE brings you the voices of award-winning jazz artist, Jazzmeia Horn, the country stylings of hometown hero-turned Nashville star, Jacqueline Rose, an unforgettable cabaret experience with Keith Boyer, and the high-energy pop sounds of a cappella sensation, Vocal Edge.

Singing isn’t the only thing that yokes us together. We use movement, dance, and film, like the Gentlemen of Vision, who will present their uplifting and award-winning documentary along with a live step dance performance. We use instruments, like world-renowned saxophonist Grace Kelly, and percussionist Matt Henry, who will present an interactive journey through the Drumming Cultures of the World.

Finally, we can use words and actions to show that despite our superficial differences, the human bond of love and respect runs deep. Irena Sendler was a Polish Catholic who risked her own life to rescue Jewish children from Nazi death camps during World War II, and is the inspiration for the Life in a Jar program.

Join us this season, as we celebrate syzygy, in the sky, on the stage & in our community.

Gentlemen of Vision Rites of Passage Enterprises, Inc. was founded by Mr. Marlon Wharton and the late Mr. Paul Albea on the campus of Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis, MO. Both Mr. Wharton and Mr. Albea saw an increasing and alarming need to address the issues and concerns of young socioeconomically disadvantaged males. Mr. Wharton believes that there is a lack of counseling, academics, mentoring, and programs that specialize in fostering manhood among young males that would curtail the increasing dropout rate. This event includes screening their award-winning documentary and treating the audience to a live step routine!

Saxophonist, singer, and composer Grace Kelly plays with the heart and passion of an old soul yet with the genre-bending zest and energy of a 24-year-old. Having been a regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s band, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Grace Kelly recently released her 10th CD as a leader. The latest album, Trying To Figure It Out, was voted #2 Jazz Album of The Year in the 2016 Downbeat Magazine Readers Poll. In 2016, Grace was also thrilled to join a dynamic 10-piece house band for NBC’s new variety show “Maya & Marty,” starring Maya Rudolph and Martin Short and produced by Lorne Michaels. “Grace Kelly has an electric charisma on-stage that instantly ignites the room,” says, band leader Jon Batiste.

Winner of the 2015 Thelonious Monk Competition, vocalist Jazzmeia Horn has a name that speaks for itself capturing her very essence. With an assured maturity and vocal confidence far beyond her years, the young singer arrives with her debut recording on Concord’s Prestige label, A Social Call, an album that reveals a talent ready to take her place alongside the best headlining jazz vocalists of today. A collection of standards, hard bop anthems, spirituals, and R&B nuggets, A Social Call is a reflection on the times. Jazzmeia says it’s “a call to social responsibility, to know your role in your community.” Great story-telling, an inspired message, fluid vocals, scat-singing, and spirited group performances– A Social Call features all one would hope to hear from a veteran vocalist of longstanding reputation. As such, the album serves as a clarion call, proudly announcing the arrival of a young, confident musical talent with a long history ahead of her, blessed with a name that carries its own destiny.
