The Site for this building is just outside of the University of Colorado at Boulder Campus on 30th Street. The site had many aspects to consider: traffic, site offsets and boundaries, zoning codes, and connections to the high traffic flow of 30th street. My parti for the design is derived from an “L” shape, this shape is chosen because of its ability to respond to sunlight. The L shape building’s glass faces South East Allowing the pleasant eastern light in the morning through after noon and minimizing the effects of the harsh summer sun in the mid afternoon. The L shape also acts as a “Power Wall” on the western side of the building. This “Power Wall” houses all plumbing and major utilities as well as incorporates both seating and storage into itself. Because of the wall’s thickness it also supplies insulation from the western sun in the summer and winds in the winter. There are two individual buildings on the site, each building holds two units. One large unit and one small unit, both with two bedrooms. Young Professional Housing

Studio 4Spring 2008

The project for studio 4 is the Young Professional Housing design.

The initial form models worked with rough programming on the site. Utilizing the space to best fit parking and maximize the building’s relationship with its surrounding

In this rough study model the parti of the “L” has begun to take shape. Windows and openings have presented themselves as an opportunity to for natural light and heat.

In this conceptual model the “L” shape has become more refined in the design and connections to parking area, the building, and street have become clear.

In this model you can see the “Power Wall begin to take shape. window openings are made to frame views as you move from space to space in the interior.

In the final site plan, The “L” shape is mimicked by an

opposing L which takes form as vegetation allow-

ing for separation from the street and the unit’s

private lawn area The connection from the

sidewalk moves between the two buildings and pushes you out into an outdoor

picnic area adjacent to the parking lots

In the design each portion of the building’s exterior is a direct expression of the interior. This separates each portion giving each its own exterior identity.

Vertical and Horizontal patterns across the windows allow for shade and light patterns to enter each bedroom.

The vegetaion which mimics the “L” shape allows for space separation into public and semi public zones.
