D e a r R e a d e r You know it well. Sometimes you meet people on your street, who are simply at peace with themselves. Even on a grey and gloomy day these people bring sunshine and happiness to all those around. For them it makes no difference if it is raining or if the sun is shining. They are driven by inner and completely different values. We are both extremely affected by and inspired by meeting such people. We meet them often when we are out making articles. They can be independent business people, who are living out their dreams, creative souls, who give themselves room to use their talents. They can also be people, who have experienced sorrow in their lives. They must live with the sorrow, but still they have the strength to be something for others and they view life from a greater perspective. Perhaps that

is why they, if anyone, live in the moment and seize the day.

That is the quality, which we admire most about a person. One of them said to us, “We have the freedom to choose how external events affect us”. That sounds both nice and easy, but it does not always turn out that way for most of us. So when you meet these people on your street, listen to them. Learn from them and soak up some of

their philosophy of life.

Often at home with these people there is a completely indescribable cosy feeling. There is an extraordinary feeling of warmth and presence. There is no key to how you choose to live and create your life. If you are at peace with yourself and what you do and have a positive outlook on life, it will automatically rub off onto your

surroundings. Carpe Diem. Seize the day.

Life is to be lived, not endured.

Delicate and fragile they look these delightful beauties, but make no mistake; columbines are most hardy and robust. When you see the breath-taking vision of endless columbines in lovely, delicate pastels or in dark, subdued nuances thoughts are immediately brought back to the gardens of your childhood, where they grew in large numbers – growing everywhere in grandmother’s perennial garden.Columbines through Time – Used for a Great Many ThingsThe common columbine is called Aquilegia vulgaris in Latin. It is said that the name has two different meanings. The one means to collect water and the other means eagle’s beak. According to Nordic mythology columbines were theholyflowersof elf maids andFrigga, theNorseGoddessof Beauty, Love and Marriage. In the old days columbine also grew in all cloister gardens and herb farms, where it was on all accounts an effective remedyagainstinflammationof themiddleear,jaundiceandcataract.Itwas also good at calming the nervous system. The root was used as an extract for skin problems. Columbines are very poisonous and therefore it was also used to provoke abortions.

Flower of SurpriseColumbines are very easy and faithful plants. They pop up year after year and usually grow in numbers, since they are good at regerminating. However,itisaflowerfullof surprises.Seedsfromthesameplantbloomin purple, pink and blue colours one year and the following year in light pastels. The reason for this is because many of the columbine you buy today are crossings between many different varieties. They contain genes from different mother plants. At the same time many different columbines are cross-bred with one another when bees pollinate them. In this way other varieties come into being. If you wish to keep your columbines in the colours they are now, you need to clip the seed stalks off while they are still green so that the seeds are not spread. If you would like a mixed glory of all the beautiful nuances, which columbines offer, then be sure to let them reseed themselves. Columbines are found in an abundance of nuances spanning from white, cream and various exquisite pastels to the stronger yet subdued nuances in pink, purple, aubergine, dark Bordeaux, blue, bluish-violet and dark blue. Many are even two-coloured and some varietieshavefilledlace-likeflowers.

Columbines in BouquetsColumbines are absolutely lovely in bouquets and make the bouquet more rustic and natural looking. However, they do not last more than four days at the most. You can make them last a bit longer by removing all the leaves from the bottom of the stalks. Put them in water and let them absorb water for an hour or two before you arrange the bouquet. Make mixed bouquets with sweet cicely, lady’s mantle, honeysuckle, clematis, peonies, cranesbill and masterwort or whatever you otherwise have in the garden, which is currently blooming. You can also make a collection of small glass vases and bottles. Place small bouquets or simply individual flowers ineach vase or bottle depending on the size. Put them all on a beautiful old tray.Youcanalsohavetheloveliestheadsfloatinginwaterinaglassbowl.Then they can be enjoyed up-close.

Easy BeautiesIn nature common columbines are found in light forests and the edges of woods in damp and nutrient-rich soil. It is a thankful plant, which thrives in both sun and shade and in most types of soil. Actually it does not demand much from its surroundings. However, it grows best in good and well-drained garden soil, preferably chalky soil. If columbines grow in a sunny area,theywillbeverydenseandfilledwithflowers,whichunfortunatelydo not last more than about 3-4 weeks. On the other hand if they grow in the shade,floweringwill last significantly longer,but the amountof flowers will be a bit smaller. The height of old fashioned columbinesvaries from 80 cm to about 120 cm depending on the variety, but there are alsonewhybrids,which are low.Here theflowers are considerablylarger than on the old varieties. The tall varieties are beautiful everywhere inthegardenduetotheirgracefulstature.Theyfitinsoelegantlyinmostgardens especially in very relaxed and romantic looking gardens, which are popular today. Columbines can be purchased in garden centres or you can buy them as seeds. It is absolutely the easiest and cheapest way to have columbines in your garden and the seeds germinate very willingly and easily. If you already have columbines in your garden or know someone who does, they can be moved in the early spring or in the autumn. It is easiest to move the young plants as their roots are not so large and therefore they have a greater chance of surviving.

Create a Feeling in your Garden with ColumbinesCommon columbines are old fashioned perennials and biannuals, which we all associate with grandmother’s garden. They are lovely in the company of early summer’s striking beauties such as peonies, but many other perennials are quite lovely next to columbines such as cranesbill, lady’s mantle, Jacob’s ladder, lupins, wild chervil or Spanish chervil, irises and foxgloves. Columbines are delightful in any perennial garden, but they look wonderful if they are allowed to spread out naturally for example in the shade under the large trees in the garden. Columbines are namely one of the few plants, which thrive in shady environs.
