JDR was awarded a substantial scope of work to support the Brunei Shell Petroleum Champion Waterflood (phase B23) project.

Brunei Shell Petroleum is one of Asia’s biggest energy companies. It will use JDR’s subsea production umbilicals to redevelop the Champion field as part of the Waterflood Project to increase oil recovery. This contract is the third umbilical project JDR has worked on for Brunei Shell Petroleum.

Brunei Shell Petroleum plans to increase the existing Champion Field production via large scale water flooding of the deeper and more developed reservoirs. Concurrently, Brunei Shell Petroleum will install a number of new platforms. JDR will develop and manufacture ten custom designed composite power umbilicals totalling 13km, for operation at water depths of up to 32m. The umbilicals will be designed by JDR’s in-house engineering team and manufactured at JDR’s state-of-the-art UK facility in Hartlepool.

The umbilical design for this project is complex. The customer requires an umbilical system to transport power and communications to multiple platforms from a central hub platform. This approach will enable the operator to distribute field-critical utilities across the field as required, versus building individual services into each platform. The product will transport chemicals, low and medium voltage power, air, and fibre optic signals – all in one single bundle!

The composite power umbilicals will be manufactured using JDR’s Vertical Lay-up Machine (VLM), designed specifically for multi-function bundles. The VLM enables bundles to be manufactured without in-line jointing.

JDR is a leading provider of technology connecting the global offshore energy industry. Our products and services enable vital control and power delivery to offshore oil, gas and renewable energy systems.

The world’s major energy companies and subsea service providers depend on high performance subsea control umbilicals and subsea power cables that operate in the world’s harshest offshore environments. JDR invests in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, technology and people to deliver these world-class subsea products.

We have a proven track record of delivering client expectations and are totally committed to lifecycle customer service. We achieve this through our specialist engineering teams, experienced project management, integrated safety systems and a global service network that ensures 24/7 aftermarket support.

BRUNEI SHELL PETROLEUM - CHAMPION B23 DEVELOPMENT COMPLEX COMPOSITE POWER UMBILICAL SUPPLY

JDR has three principle manufacturing locations in Hartlepool and Littleport in the UK and Sattahip in Thailand. Hartlepool was selected for the Brunei Shell Petroleum development due to its twin thermoplastic umbilical and power cable production lines. This enabled concurrent manufacture of both products, reducing delivery lead times.

STABILITY ANALYSIS UMBILICAL HARDWARE

An important element of the supply contract includes seabed stability analysis for the permanently installed umbilicals. The umbilicals will be installed at very shallow water depths and will need to remain stable in extreme weather conditions.

JDR modeled the impact of weather conditions using sophisticated software. As a result, the umbilical design included sufficient ballast to pass stability criteria to international standards. JDR’s modern analysis software can provide clients with absolute confidence that their umbilicals will require zero maintenance for the full design life of the field, which can be in excess of 25 years.

JDR’s hardware design team created the umbilical termination assembly. Special analysis is used to determine the required tensile loading for the pull-in heads and to ensure they fit the J-tubes provided by the client. The scope includes:

• Pull-in heads

• Hang-off bodies and split clamps

• Termination boxes

• J-tube seals & VBR

• Subsea repair jointsMeshed umbilical cross section

The umbilical will be loaded onto a vessel using a number of vertical reels. Each reel can weigh up to 350 tonnes. The reels are modified to fit each individual project and will be lined up on the quayside before being lifted onto the transportation vessel.JDR’s Hartlepool factory is located alongside an 12m deep harbour with direct access to the North Sea. This ensures easy factory access for most ocean-going vessels.
