forward a small amount, and the process was repeated until the desired amount of feed had been dispersed. Side screens were provided to keep animals and people away from the rotor. The 230 required a tractor with at least 64-hp, however due to the extra drawbar weight imposed with this attachment, a drawbar support bracket was required for John Deere tractors 3020 through 4430.

However, Deere again was not the first company to build loose-hay stacker wagons. That distinction belonged to Hesston, who in 1968 introduced their A-II StakHand for the 1969 model year. This machine had a pickup and cross auger that delivered the material to a 5 ft. diameter blower, shooting it up an oscillating spout to the compression chamber. The A-II, which became the model 60 in the following year, made 4 to 6 ton stacks 9 ft. 4 in. wide by 20 ft. long and about 12 ft. high. This StakHand rode on 3 sets of dual wheels (six tires) on one axle centerline. Once again,

even though Deere was not the first company to build loose-hay stacker wagons, they again were the only full line company to produce these machines.

According to authors Don Macmillam and Roy Harrington, sales of John Deere Stack Wagons in the U. S. and Canada in 1975 reached 1329 units. This outpaced the “new kid on the block,” Deere’s new model 500 large round baler, which had first year sales of 788 in 1975. That probably was the only year when that happened, as the large round balers eventually ended the stack wagon era. (No numbers were given for hay cubers.) John Deere’s last inclusion of stack wagons in their Hay Equipment sales literature was for the model year 1983. Implement and Tractor’s Product File listed a high of 18 different stacker wagon manufacturers in 1976 but only one in 1985, Hesston. The third method of harvesting and feeding hay with no manual labor, the large round baler with medium size hay packages, had won the popularity contest.

these machines.
