Green SpotlightThe Green Committee would like to spot-light Gary Timblin of Brighton USA. Garyand his company have been very impor-tant in contributing to changes in the JCCand our operations. Last year we reported

about the green cleaners introduced to ouragency. We started testing a hydrogen perox-

ide based cleaner-H2Orange2 ConcentratedCleaner (a general all purpose cleaner). This safe, non-toxic cleanerworks as a degreaser, virucide, sanitizer, deodorizer, floor, carpetand glass cleaner. Without any kind of dyes or toxins, it is safe touse anywhere water is safe in your entire facility. And how does itclean? As effectively as anything else we’ve used without the fumesand toxicity. Especially in our ECE Center, parents can rest easy

knowing their children can touch sur-faces that are clean and safe.Gary says, “The wonder of this cleaner

is that not only is it used in places onStaten Island like nursing homes, schools, day care and health care facili-ties, it’s also used as an industrial cleanerin some of the largest industrial compa-nies on Staten Island.” Brighton USA was founded in 1966 as

Brighton Chemicals. This Staten Island

business has been a Chamber of Commerce member for over 40years. Gary, originally from Buffalo moved to the area, (MorrisCounty, NJ) in 1987. Married for 18 years and with two daughters,he joined Brighton USA in 2008 as a partner with his father-in-law,Bob Skeele, founder of the company. As Vice President, Gary hasbeen instrumental in changing the purpose and mission ofBrighton, USA to a business model of solving customer’s problemswith a strong focus on providing sustainable and environmentallysensitive products and services. He believes, “saving customer’smoney and helping them take toxic and hazardous chemicals outof their environment” is great for business and great for the planet.Gary’s success in the business application of his beliefs has led

him to expand the products Brighton are offering to include energyefficient lighting as well. As a NYSERDA Certified Commercial Busi-ness Partner Gary and team’s expertisein fluorescents, LED and induction light-ing makes them the “go to” companyon Staten Island for companies lookingto reduce costs and their environmen-tal footprint. Gary is working on a project now at

the North Shore JCC to replace all thelighting with new energy efficient light-ing that will lower the lighting electric-ity (continued on page 8)

Dear Fit Pro’sI seem to feel less energetic than Staten Island’s Chuck the groundhogin February. How do I add some instant energy into my day?

Signed, ChuckDear Chuck, A few lifestyles changes can help you sail through your schedule withstamina to spare. Something as basic as adding protein to your lunchor taking a 10 minute power nap (not at your desk, of course) can makeyou feel energetic in an instant. A couple more quick fixes are:1. Drink enough water: The reason you’re feeling run down may simplybe that you are dehydrated. Keep a bottle in your desk or car and aimfor 8 eight ounce glasses a day. 2. Eat breakfast in the afternoon. Your second breakfast that is. As abefore-dinner pick me up, enjoy a bowl of whole grain cereal with skimmilk and a few slices of banana. All three foods are high in B vitamins, which your body uses to make energy. 3. Go Green: People who work in windowless offices are more produc-tive when they put plants in their work space.4. Light a scented candle (again…not on your desk). Grapefruit hasbeen linked to an increase in energy and a decrease in anxiety.

Member Spotlight: Santo and Gloria Costa, ages 83 and 80 respectively They may be retired but are no way nearretirement from exercise! After 50 years ofmarriage and working out...they have lots todo and so little time to accomplish it all withthere busy schedules. They walk, arm in arm,in and out of the Fitness Center but go theirown way inside. “The good friends and crew” is what keeps themreturning year after year (for 11 years now). They look forward to postworkout when they meet up with fellow members and schmooze in thecomfortable chairs outside the weight room. They discuss the healthyItalian lunches or dinners prepared by Gloria. Or the latest plays, movies or shows. They are a testament to couples who workout to-gether-stay together. This time for half a century and counting!
