Funded by the New Initiatives Fund, each seminarocused on goal-setting, open communication, and

per ormance evaluation, all critical skills or e ectivesupervisors. We’re already drawing up plans to presentmore supervision seminars in 2007 in order to give JCCpro essionals more o what they need.

Our executive training o erings included our well-known Executive Seminars in the early part o the year, anda brand-new initiative, the Executive Roundtable, at theend. Following the pattern in many industries, we broughttogether seasoned and success ul executives and newerdirectors in the Roundtable to share in ormation, modelsolutions to problems, and talk over current and potentialissues. MMTP, our tr aining program or middle managersran through June, graduating a group o 19 middle-levelJCC pro essionals. Almost hal o the group have wonpromotions within their JCCs since they completed theprogram.

Six JCC Association graduate scholarship recipientscompleted their studies in 2006, and all o them ound workat JCCs in the U.S. and Canada, putting their degrees inJewish communal service, marketing, public administration, and communications to good use and strengthening theirJCCs. We selected ve new scholars in April, and beganreceiving applications or 2007-2008 be ore the year ended. The ull-time recipients will receive up to $10,000 a yearand commit themselves to work in the JCC eld or three years a ter graduation. Part-time students already workingat JCCs can also apply or tuition aid.

For the rst time, our scholarship coordinator reachedout to over two hundred scholarship alumni, and received

an encouraging response rom 50 percent o them. Thegroup held an inaugural break ast at the JCCs o NorthAmerica Pro essional Con erence to explore how they canbuild camaraderie among JCC pro essionals and supportthe eld. We’re grate ul to the generous donors that makeour scholarship program possible.

To keep JCCs vibrant and sta ed with energetic young people, pro essional development services visited 20campuses during the 2005-’06 school year, introducing JCCwork to college students. We also organized a recruitmentcorps in each o 18 communities—volunteer recruiterswho go to campuses in their areas to tell students aboutthe bene ts o working in the JCC Movement. To ll othervacancies at JCCs, we posted jobs at www.jccworks.comin 2006, and opened hundreds o new applicant les. To

ll those open positions, we sent out over seven hundredresumes. Our pro essional development services workedceaselessly in 2006, as always, to provide highly skilledemployees to JCCs, and help JCC pro essionals advancetheir careers.

GesherCityOur Young Adult Initiative is off and running

JCC Association has long wanted to help JCCs engage young Jewish adults, people who are mobile and looking

or jobs, homes, and riends. We developed an alliancewith GesherCity, an online community that success ully reaches young Jewish adults. The GesherCity website, www.geshercity.org, helps young Jewish adults new to an area ndapartments, meet people with similar interests, or locateJewish social and cultural events. We hired a pro essionalto work speci cally with GesherCity and young adult sta in JCCs, and 2006 saw a great increase in the success o theprogram.

Our initial goal was to have GesherCity websites andprograms in 20 communities, with 20,000 active usermembers, and that goal is just within our reach.

In 2007 we will launch a rede-signed GesherCity website, and seekcorporate sponsorships, advertis-ing, and oundation grants.

Given their mobility, busy lives, diverse interests, and changing li estyles,

Jewish young adults are one o the hardest age cohorts toengage. Supported by the New Initiatives Fund, BenjaminGordon, the Grandchildren o Harvey & Lynn Meyerho Foundation, and the Estate o Emmy Ambes, GesherCity isproving to be a success ul bridge between young adults andJewish community throughout North America.

Mandel Center for Excellencein Leadership & ManagementThe go-to place for the help JCCs need to

be the best they can beThe Mandel Center or Excellence in Leadership and

Management, which we ormed to ensure that the JCCMovement develops the highly quali ed lay and pro essionalleaders it needs to guide a complex institution such as theJCC, developed a system in 2006 to help JCCs quanti y wherethey are succeeding and where they need to work harder.Business leaders have known or a long time that trackinghelps managers do better, because managers pay attention towhat they can measure. We’ve brought this insight to the JCCworld with JCC Excellence-The Benchmarking Project. Thissystem provides tools to JCC executive directors to measuretheir per ormance against that o their peers. JCC Associationconsultants can use these tools as well to help JCCs close thegaps between their current per ormance and excellence.

The rst three areas or which we’ve developedbenchmarking criteria are customer satis action, nancialaccounting, and people participation.

We’re setting up benchmarks in personnel satis action, governance, and donor relations next so that JCCs will beable to improve their per ormance in those areas as well.

Our in ormation resources manager responded tomany unique in ormation requests in 2006 or data andresearch on issues critical to JCCs, and provided updates,

ollow-ups, or links to existing resources to even more JCCs.She answered ve times as many listserv queries as in 2005,and created our times as many small surveys. We have alsobegun to explore trends in general society and the JCC eldin order to help our JCCs anticipate change, somethingall success ul institutions must do. We know current andcorrect in ormation is critical, and we’re supplying it.

We’re very proud o our First-Time Executive supportand mentoring program, which includes community visits, the assignment o an experienced colleague to work closely and personally with the new exec, and training on how tocollaborate with key leaders. Now, when we help a JCC

nd a new executive director or an assistant executive ispromoted, we are able to provide the support needed to

insure that executive’s success. In 2006, we assisted 12 newexecutives to be the leaders their JCCs needed.

For a long time, we’ve wanted to help those youngcommunities that are beginning to think about how mucha JCC would add to their vitality and cohesion. In 2006, wepublished an invaluable guide or emerging communities, which takes them step-by-step through the process o planning, undraising, and building a new JCC.

To give JCCs the targeted consultations they’ve beenasking or, we added nancial resource development andbusiness management consulting services in 2006 to themarketing help we already provide. We also published a

nancial management guidebook that provides a blueprintor JCCs to establish high-quality systems or accounting,

payroll, personnel, insurance, and oversight. This step-by-step guide can help JCCs run more e ciently andtransparently. In addition, the guidebook includes a charto key conversations between management and leadershipthat acts as a communications map. In all, this invaluable

guide will enable JCCs to serve their communities even moree ectively.

Twenty-one JCCs took part in the benchmarkingproject, eager to learn how they measure up andhow they can improve their operations.

Sports & WellnessOur sports & wellness department

visited tness centers, organizedconferences, handed out grants,

forged new alliances, and designed staffdevelopment programs—all to bene t JCCs

With an addition to our sports & wellness sta , wemore than doubled our site visits to JCC tness centers, meeting the growing demand or consultations. We werealso able to organize the 2006 Sports & Wellness Summit,

where 20 pro essionals rom 16 JCCs told us what they needto be success ul. Thanks to this in ormation, we were able toput together a priority list to help the eld. First on that listis pro essional sales training or JCC workers who are notsales pro essionals. Both tness and other JCC sta needto develop the abilities to cross-market tness services.

Weight-management is a tness service thatwe piloted in 2006 with three JCCs and a company

called Healthy Inspirations. The company created koshermenus or nutritious and balanced limited-calorie meals, and the JCCs provide weekly meetings, peer support, andencouragement. We know that this model o restrictedcalories and mutual support is th e most success ul at long-term weight management, and the JCC is a natural venue.

The percentage o women coaches is declining, justwhen many girls are more interested in sports and need emalerole models. Through a program with the Women’s SportsFoundation, the WinStar Foundation, and the Hadassah

Foundation, we created the Women Coaches Curriculum. We hosted our second annual Women Coaches Clinic atthe Lautenberg Family JCC o Greater Morris County, inWhippany, New Jersey in the spring, where the goal wasto provide strategies and skills or JCC pro essionals torecruit and train volunteer women coaches. Another o ourprograms, GoGirlGo, also sponsored by the Women’s SportsFoundation and Hadassah Foundation, awarded grants to 23JCCs to educate girls to avoid high-risk behaviors throughthe arena o sports and healthy competition.

In addition to our relationships with Major LeagueBaseball, the NBA/WNBA, and the NHL, all o whichprovided more grants to JCCs than the previous year, we

urther developed our programming with the NFL. In 2006,we provided grants to 131 JCC youth ootball programs, which totaled more than $220,000. The JCC Association-NFL Youth Football Partnership launched a ull-servicewebsite, where visitors could nd in ormation on basic rules

or youth ootball, tips on how to start a program, stepsto register or a sports administration certi cate programwith George Washington University, and more. The Youth

Football Partnership also piloted a coach’s training programdeveloped by the Youth Sports Research Council o RutgersUniversity with seven JCCs, the goal o which was tosensitize coaches to the importance o enjoyment and goodsportsmanship on the playing eld.

The Mandel Centerfor Jewish EducationInspiring Jewish Journeys is MCJE’s mission, and they’re hard at work all day long

The Mandel Center’s vision is to in use Jewish li e andlearning, Jewish experience and ambiance, into the core o JCCs and camps. In 2006, over 100 day and resident campsused our Jewish-themed camp curriculum TAG: JewishValues Through Jewish Camping®, allowing thousands o children to absorb Jewish values as part o their camp day. Asthe year closed, we began to plan an adult education initiative, which will allow adults to enjoy a similar experience.

Lekhu Lakhem: Jewish & Educational Journeys or JCCResident Camp Directors came to a success ul conclusion in2006 with three seminars, one in Israel, one in Cali ornia, andone in Arizona. In addition to these seminars, each o our12 Fellows learned Jewish texts and education in bi-monthly phone meetings with their mentors. At the concluding session, each Lekhu Lakhem Fellow presented both a project carriedout at camp based on the Lekhu Lakhem experience, and avision statement articulating the Fellow’s notion o whatJewish camping can become. We hope to create a vibrant

alumni program rom this rst cohort, and to create a secondcohort at the end o the coming year. This highly success ulprogram was underwritten by The AVI CHAI Foundation.

Based on our experiences with the resident campdirectors seminar, our Lekhu Lakhem seminar or day campdirectors began at the end o 2005. This group o 18 o thetop JCC day camp pro essionals attended two seminars inCali ornia, and learned with the aculty every other week inphone mentoring and learning sessions.

At the end o 2006, MCJE took its rst steps to launchKanyon: Adult Jews Learning and Living, to ll the next majorJewish educational need on the JCC Movement agenda. We want to engage thousands o Jewish adults and amiliesin North American JCCs in fexible and meaning ul Jewishlearning and living experiences. We intend to do this by producing an articulated program o adult education, alongwith the materials and training modules which will secureits success in JCCs around the country. With the additiono Kanyon and the generosity o the Mandel SupportingFoundations, we will give both children and adults at JCCs apathway to developing their Jewish souls.

Merrin Center

for Teen ServicesInspiring JCC professionals to connect withteens when they are most impressionable

The ourth class o Merrin Teen Pro essional Fellowsgraduated in May o 2006, completing an 18-month Jewishlearning and pro essional development experience. Withthis background, the Merrin Fellows are able to have a morepower ul impact on thousands o Jewish teens at a criticaltime in their lives, a time when they are developing a senseo themselves as people and as Jews. In 2006, we expandedour e orts to serve this population by creating the MerrinCenter or Teen Services. In addition to the Teen Pro essionalFellows program, the Merrin Center will work to strengthenthe skills and talents o everyone in the JCC who interactswith teens. Made possible by a generous endowment by theMerrin Family Foundation, the Merrin Center is movingahead as we complete raising all the unds it needs.

Adult ServicesThe JCC Movement is there for20-somethings to centenarians, supportingtheir interests and responding to theirconcerns

Once teens become adults, JCCs still work hard to givethem the programs they’re looking or. Our adult servicesdepartment continued its very popular monthly con erencecalls or adult directors and or arts & culture directors.Participants rave that the calls eel like mini-conventions,giving them the chance to network with their peers andshare in ormation about both success ul and not-so-greatprograms. The baby-boom generation, which will beginretiring in the next ve years, is the astest growing andmost underserved age group in JCCs. Accordingly, wegathered together education experts and adult programdirectors to plan new program initiatives or recent retirees. We partnered with cheshvan.org to provide resources orJCCs or Jewish social action month, and began to plan

or a blood drive to take place at all JCCs next Cheshvan, the month designated or social action projects. We remain

ocused on helping JCCs serve their large adult populationsin creative and e ective ways.

CampingJCC Camping is a de ning experiencefor hundreds of thousands of kids, and we help JCC camps make thatexperience even more inspirational

Through the generous corporate sponsorship o TheCoca-Cola Company ®, we once more were able to o er JCCcamps the opportunity to participate in the JCC Association/Coca-Cola Company Days o Caring and Sharing programin 2006. The 36 participating day and resident camps—triple

the number rom the time the program started—worked on

service activities bene ting their communities. The campsused the special Days o Caring and Sharing curriculum unitprepared by the Mandel Center or Jewish Education to givetheir projects even deeper Jewish signi cance. Our campingdepartment organized two training sessions or JCC campsta in the spring—one in our o ces and the other at theJCCs o Chicago—to enable camp directors to get the mostout o the program.

We also led a resident-camp con erence, where campdirectors learned about trends and how to market theircamps and recruit top-notch sta , and shared in ormationabout sa ety concerns brought up by social networkingwebsites such as mySpace and Facebook. To deal with theseand other issues, we initiated a camp leadership group, thegoal o which is to advance JCC camping as an enrichingand secure experience.

Our camping department made it possible or 63Israeli summer shlichim to bring an invaluable dimension

to 118 JCC camps and other nonpro t Jewish camps.

Early Childhood EducationOur youngest members inspire some ofour best work, and our department of earlychildhood services inspired teachers toinspire students

Slingshot 06, a booklet that highlights 50 innovativeand creative Jewish programs and organizations, selected AnEthical Start® to be part o that elite group. Our preschoolcharacter-building curriculum is based on the classic Jewishtext, Pirkei Avot, and is currently in almost ty JCCs.

Published by 21/6 , a consulting division o the Andrea andCharles Bron man Philanthropies, Slingshot 06 looks orgroups that are thinking creatively about the Jewish uture. We’re very proud to be included in that chevrah.

In another vote o con dence in this singular program,The Righteous Persons Foundation, chaired by lm directorSteven Spielberg, awarded An Ethical Start a third grant

or $100,000. This latest grant will und specially trainedtext teachers who will consult with participating JCCs andinitiate them into the particular Jewish mode o learningthat is text study. We have already trained more than onehundred and eighty teachers, and hope to reach many more.Seven training con erences in 2006 grounded ECE teachersand directors in the traditions o Jewish text study and thelatest theories o childhood development.

We started with 23 JCCs, and now we have trainedteachers at almost triple that number. Thousands o childrenhave learned the undamental Jewish principles o treatingpeople airly, o sel -control, and o the value o riendshipand learning, thanks in part to generous support rom theBrill Family Foundation.

Because o another supporter, the Marcus Foundation, our early childhood services department was able to startwork on a amily- riendly Ethical Start website, someplaceparents could nd more in ormation about the values theirchildren were learning, and where they could advance theirown learning as well. We will be ready to launch the websitein 2007.

As a way to deal with the emerging shortage o preschooldirectors, we hosted our second annual two-day con erence

or new-to-JCC ECE directors. The con erence ocused onissues speci c to JCCs, such as working with lay leaders, settingup a committee structure, and viewing the JCC preschool as a

rst step in inspiring Jewish journeys. As always, we responded to requests rom JCCs or

assessments on their ECE administrative structure, learningenvironments, and marketing plans, and we continued tohelp JCCs maintain their traditional edge in high-quality early childhood programming. With our support, training, and renowned values-education program, JCC preschools

are the best in the business.

JCCs of North AmericaBiennialThe Biennial brings leaders together tokeep the Movement on track

new ideas. A ter warm welcoming remarks rom the BiennialCommittee Chair Cheryl Fishbein, Host Committee ChairAnn E. Lazarus, and JCCs o Greater Philadelphia ChairArlene Fickler, ormer Philadelphia JCCs CEO and JCCAssociation board member Phillip M. Shiekman remindedthe delegates o Maimonides’ injunctions to donate to theJewish community and to encourage others to donate. “Leteach o us make true capacity gi ts,” Shiekman said, andmake the dream o the JCC Movement a reality.

JCC Association President Allan Finkelstein continuedthat theme in his keynote address. “We must declare that

nancial resource development is our ourth core business,”he told the crowd. Gary Jacobs, chair o our FinancialResource Development Committee, introduced the 12million dollar campaign to secure Jewish utures, and thenpresented miniatures o the engraved windows in our lobby to ve million-dollar-plus donors: Lester and Geri Pollack,Seth Merrin and Anne Heyman, the Marcus Foundation,Irene and Ed Kaplan, and the amily o Esther Leah Ritz k ”z ,who accepted on her behal . Then Ed Kaplan presented awindow to the last donor, Gary Jacobs.

The Frank L. Weil Award or Distinguished Con-tribution to the JCC Movement went to Ronald L. Leibow

or his selfess service to the Jewish community o LosAngeles and JCC Association, and the Florence G. HellerPro essional Award was presented to Lew Stolzenberg, executive director o the Staten Island JCC. Videosintroducing each man made clear why they so richly deserved the high honors. Long-time Jewish educatorBarry Chazan, currently the direc tor o education o Taglit-birthright Israel, received the Morton L. Mandel JewishEducational Leadership Award rom the man who madethe award possible. “Barry Chazan’s name is synonymouswith Jewish education,” Mandel said, adding that he didn’tknow how many more such awards he would be presenting, but the experience meant even more to him when he couldpresent it to a riend. “His work has pro oundly a ected theway JCCs view their Jewish mission,” he said o Chazan.

Deborah E. Lipstadt, Emory University’s DorotPro essor o Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies—andJCC Association scholar-in-residence—told a packedballroom o major turning points in her li e. Lipstadt’slong legal battle with David Irving, a Holocaust denier,in the British courts was a central crisis. “There was noway I could have ought that battle on my own,” she said, describing how her riends and colleagues in the Jewishcommunal world raised two million dollars or her de ense.Quoting the parsha read at Purim, she said, “I elt the wr atho a modern-day Amalek,” another implacable enemy whowanted to erase the memory o the Jews. Throughout herli e, institutions o the Jewish communal world nurtured

and supported her, she said. “There is no need to put theJewish back into JCC. It’s already there.”

Incoming JCC Association Chair Alan P. Solowencouraged the Biennial attendees by emphasizing that theJCC Movement has much to o er. “We have our own primary responsibility to provide meaning ul Jewish experiences,”Solow said, stressing that the JCC is the per ect institutionto show Jews how to lead normal lives in used with Jewishmeaning. “The Jewish people have overcome obstacles andchallenges or thousands o years. Change is not our enemy.”Adaptation and innovation have allowed the Jews to fourishbecause Jewish tradition has given them the tools to do so,Solow said, and the per ect place to transmit those Jewishvalues is the JCC. “We live much better now,” Solow said, and “that’s a good thing. I pledge that as a movement wewill closely work with any other organization” that wants towork collaboratively.

The Biennial ended with a rousing invitation to the2008 Biennial in Miami, chaired by board member NoreenGordon Sablotsky, where JCC leaders can once more plannew and creative ways to inspire Jewish journeys.

years or pro essionals working at JCCs throughoutthe United States exceeded the rate o infation.

• The gaps between higher paid and lower paidpro essionals narrowed between 2003 and 2006.Executives saw their compensation increase by 11 percent, while entry-level workers saw theirsalaries rise by 1 percent.

JWB JewishChaplains CouncilAs always, our JWB Jewish ChaplainsCouncil was there for our troops

Change came to the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council in2006. A ter 25 years as director, Rabbi David Lapp retiredamid testimonials rom his colleagues and celebrationo his many years o dedicated service. Rabbi HaroldRobinson, a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, took over asdirector in September, in time to begin to implement many o the recommendations o the JCC Association task orcereport, Effective Service to the Jewish Military . Headedby Sol Green eld, ormer associate executive director o JCC Association, the study recommended an expandedpro essional sta or JWB, and a standing board committeeto ocus on Jewish military personnel. The task orce alsorecommended building a database o all Jews ser ving in theU.S. Armed Forces and acilitating communication betweenchaplains. We have already established a chaplains listserv, and are setting up a blog where chaplains and the public atlarge can read chaplains direct- rom-the- eld reports.

JTS rabbinical student Josh Sherwin earned our rstmilitary chaplaincy scholarship, which is underwritten by Rabbi Philip Silverstein, chair o the JWB Jewish ChaplainsCouncil, in honor o his late wi e, Adina. Sherwin has agreed tobecome a ull-time active-duty chaplain when he completes hisrabbinical training. This scholarship, designated or a studentat a Conservative seminary, o ers $15,000 a year or up to

our years. We are hope ul that other generous bene actorswill enable us to expand this worthwhile program.Jewish chaplains continued to serve the spiritual and

social needs o Jewish servicemen and women all overthe world, with the help and support o JWB JewishChaplains Council. We sent kosher- or-Passover oodand Solo Seder kits at Passover, Jewish PublicationSociety paperback versions o the Torah at Shavuoth, and menorahs, dreidels, and candy or Hanukkah.

We sent soldiers thousands o phone cards,so they could call their amilies at any time. RabbiRobinson visited troops stationed around theworld, including Djibouti in the Horn o A ricaand Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Since 1917, duringpeace and war, JWB has been there or our peoplein the armed orces.

Florence G. Heller–JCCAssociation Research CenterOur investigation and study arm helpsJCCs see where they’re going

Without accurate in ormation, JCCs cannot use theirresources wisely or plan e ectively or uture growth. OurFlorence G. Heller-JCC Association Research Center isthe investigation and study arm o the JCC Movement. It gathers and interprets that critical in ormation or thebene t o all JCCs. During 2006, FGH studied severalimportant issues.

FGH completed the 2006 Survey of JCC Leadershipand the Jewish Mission of JCCs. The Mandel Center orJewish Education sponsored this project, which includedinterviewing JCC pro essionals, presidents, and members. Its goal was to assess the Jewish programming and ambiancein JCCs and the impact upon JCC members, as well as howstrongly JCC leaders and pro essionals elt about theimportance o the JCC’s Jewish mission.

FGH worked with our department o pro essionaldevelopment services to produce tri-annual pro essionalsalary surveys or the U.S. and Canada. This survey showedthat JCC compensation had slightly exceeded the rate o infation, and done better than that or workers at the lowesttiers, an important indicator that JCCs are closing the gapbetween their highest and lowest paid employees.

FGH released Shabbat & Holiday Practices at JCCs:The 2006 Survey , which indicated that in response to theircommunities’ needs, two-thirds o JCCs are open all orpart o the day and o er some kind o programming onSaturdays.

FGH conducted the Annual JCC Budgetary Survey ,

which includes a survey o executive and assistant executivedirectors’ salaries and bene ts; and operating income andexpenditures. This survey is conducted annually and the

We Moved to520 Eighth AvenueWe moved to 520 Eighth Avenue so wecould deliver even better services to JCCs

In a change that secures our uture or the next 20 years, we moved our main, New York City o ce rom26th Street to 520 Eighth Avenue. Our old o ces were ina neighborhood that was turning increasingly residentialand becoming much more expensive. A ter a long search,we ound space in midtown Manhattan in a building thathouses many nonpro t organizations. In our new home,we are paying less per square oot and are able to providethe space and the sophisticated technology that our newprogramming initiatives require. We can now use ourextensive con erence space or the many training seminarswe provide to the eld and to convene meetings with JCCsta and leadership on existing programs such as JCCMaccabi ArtsFest, the JCC Maccabi Games, An Ethical Star t,and our new adult education initiative rom the MandelCenter or Jewish Education. We installed up-to-the-minuteaudio-visual hardware and so tware so we can meet withpeople who may be across the continent. A liated JCCs inthe New York metropolitan area can take advantage o these

resources, and other organizations can rent our meetingspace, providing additional income. We eel ortunate thatin New York City’s competitive real-estate market, we wereable to nd conveniently located o ce space at 1999 priceswith a very reasonable rate o increase that gives us the spacewe need to represent and ser ve the JCC Movement, and we

are grate ul to the donors to the Securing Jewish Futurescampaign who made it possible. The Torah commands “You shall write them upon the

doorposts o your house and upon your gates.” To consecrateour new home, board members took a break rom theOctober board meeting and attended the dedication o the Jerri-Ann and Gary Jacobs Family Con erence Centerand the Edward H. and Irene Kaplan Lobby, along withthe Morton L. Mandel Executive Suite. Barbara and EdGoldberg a xed a mezuza to the entrance to the receptionarea, and Anne and Stephen M. Kau man and Jeromeand Evelyn Makowsky attached mezuzot on the lintels o the Kau man & Makowsky Board Room. To symbolizeour ongoing tradition o service, ormer chair Ed Kaplan

astened the mezuza rom our old o ce to the entry thatleads to the con erence center. Geri and Lester Pollock andNoreen Gordon Sablotsky dedicated the con erence roomsbearing their respective names. Entwining tradition andchange, we celebrated our new home.

To EverythingThere Is a Season

Three long-standing members o our sta le t in 2006,a ter decades o outstanding contributions. Executive Vice-President o Program Services Leonard Rubin joined JCCAssociation in 1978 as the camping consultant, and as hisresponsibilities increased, he helped the agency grow intothe multidimensional organization it is today, developingand supervising programs in health and wellness, camping, adult and teen services, and early childhood education.Lenny was responsible or conceiving programs as varied as“the great Succahrama” to JCC Maccabi Arts est.

Through the years, Lenny mentored numerous JCCpro essionals, encouraging them through guidance andexample. As Saul Levenshus, president/CEO o the BarshopJCC o San Antonio, said, “Lenny, you are a class act, atrue gem. You have helped to train and teach a generationo pro essionals through the programs and initiatives youconceived o , nurtured, and brought to li e throughout yourcareer. Those o us who have had the opportunity to cross your path have been eternally changed or the better.”

Lenny’s thought ulness, creativity, and integrity werelegendary in the JCC Movement, rom his early days at theCleveland and Tulsa JCCs. “You have exempli ed the best inthe Movement,” wrote Mitchell Ja e, another long-time JCCAssociation sta member. “Those who have been privileged towork with you have been enriched by who you are, what youhave inspired in others, and what you have accomplished.”Lenny retired at the end o 2006, and passed away on April 18,2007, a ter a long illness.

The director and deputy director o JWB Jewish ChaplainsCouncil, Rabbis David Lapp and Nathan Landman, steppeddown rom their posts in 2006 as well, a ter a cumulative morethan orty years o dedication to Jewish military chaplainsand personnel. They worked devotedly to provide materials, support, and training to Jewish chaplains and lay leaders allover the world, bringing a bit o yiddishkeit to Jewish men andwomen very ar rom home and everything amiliar. We wish

them well, and thank them most sincerely or everythingthey did or us.

Charity NavigatorIn 2006, Charity Navigator, America’s largest indepen-

dent evaluator o nonpro t organizations, gave us their high-est rating. That means that we do a great job o allocating ourresources in the most scally responsible way. According toCharity Navigator’s website, www.CharityNavigator.org, thisrating indicates that our undraising practices are exception-al–exceeding industry standards or percent o dollars goingto programs, low undraising overhead, and nancial trans-parency. This rating should inspire even more con dence inour donors that their contributions are being used e ciently and e ectively.

Launched in the fall of 2005, the Meeting the Challenge: SECURING JEWISH FUTURES campaign is making it possible for JCC Association to achieve a tripartite goal:

• Creating and endowing the new Merrin Center for Teen Services to bene t both Jewishteens throughout North America and the teen professionals in JCCs who work with them.

• Enhancing the JCC Association general endowment to enable us to meet the rising costs ofour current initiatives, maintain the quality of our signature programs, and respond exiblyto new JCC needs as they arise.

• Meeting the capital expenses of our relocation to new of ces, necessitated by the changingreal estate market in New York. Our new headquarters are providing a scally responsible, cost ef cient, technologically sophisticated home with room for growth in the years ahead.

Donors Of cers and Board

Leonard RubinEarlier this year, we lost our long-time board member,Leonard Rubin. Rubin was a mainstay of his northern NewJersey community, deeply involved in many communalinstitutions, but he had a special relationship with the JCCMovement. He was a founder and supporter of the JCCon the Palisades, from its original home in Englewood tothe large, beautiful facility in Tena y. The whole Rubin

family—his wife Syril, and their children, Daniel, Robert, Toby, Leslie, andMark, and their families—loved the JCC, and their dedication is evident fromthe nursery school to the basketball court. Rubin joined the JCC Associationboard in 1978 and chaired the 1986 Biennial in Toronto as well as theLeadership Development Task Force. Always concerned about the futureof the JCC Movement, he received the Frank L. Weil Award and the JCCAssociation Community Builders Award in recognition of his extraordinaryaccomplishments. His generosity made possible the JCC Association scholar-in-residence program, which has deepened the Jewish education of both staffand board. “He was the guy who articulated and inspired and motivated theothers,” said Sandra Gold, another JCC Association board member and friendand neighbor of Rubin’s. We mourn his loss; he will be deeply missed.
