Urban Meadow
The Task: This is a recently remodeled park. The assignment was to take the original conditions and develop our own remodel plan. The plan needed the equivilant of 2 basketball courts, a playground for children ages 5-12, an admin. building, and 8 parking spaces. Combining the site’s topography with pedestrian desire lines inspired a geometric design. The admin. building is centrally located with a paved area to accommodate community events like a farmer’s market (a need identified by a study done for the real remodel). A rain garden is sized to handle addition water runoff . The playground is a series of three spaces: black top, jungle gym/sandbox, and a green room to provide a range of play options. Trees act as a buffer between the playground and the road. 2 dog runs (1 for small and 1 for large dogs) are proposed ( another need identified by the study). Site lines from the road were also considered for police surveillance needs.

The Task: To suggest changes and improvements to the area surrounding the Student Union on the University of Georgia’s Costa Rica Campus. Water management is a very important issue on campus. The administration building flooded twice in the 3 months we were there and the gravel path had washed away several times. A new concrete swale was proposed to channel the water and then pipe it into a new rain garden. Gravel pavers were suggested to help stabilize the rock path. This area is the entrance to campus. Due to the campus’s distance from the airport, guests often arrive at night, but outside lighting disrupts wildlife. Chemically treated pavers that glow in the dark were discovered and suggested to light the way between the parking lot and the student union. A new indoor study lounge was also proposed. The campus has an outdoor space for this purpose, but during the rainy season, use of the existing space is infrequent.

The Task: Design a “Place of my Own.” After spending a year working at the St. James Tearoom, I have come to appreciate ‘Tea Time’. My place is designed around this ritual. As preparing the tea is as important as partaking of tea, my place includes both a kitchen and an eating area. Both activities should be social events and so the spaces are meant to accommodate several people comfortably and promote social interaction. A grand hallway between the two spaces allow for a mental and physical transition between the two activities.

shell Gas station reModel
The Task: The owner of several Shell Gas Stations in the Baltimore area approached Denison Landscaping about starting a beautification program. My job was to go out to four test sites with a crew and make “quick fix” improvements with an eye toward a unified aesthetic, safety of the customer, and visibility of the station. Tall hedges were removed/ replaced and overgrown areas (particularly at site entrances) were cleaned and new plants with color were added. While each site had unique needs, a unified plant palette was applied to each. Within a month of completing the test sites, all four stations had seen an increase in revenue, and 47 more locations had signed on to have their stations beautified.

PlantinG Plans
The Task: While on assistantship at the University of Georgia, one of my tasks was to transfer hand drawn planting plans into AutoCAD. This plan was originally drawn by Professor Neal Weatherly and was used to propose changes to the Founder’s Memorial Garden.

The Task: As part of my internship with Dension Landscaping, I generated several residential planting plans. This particular client had a $2,000 budget, wanted to add a little color to her front yard, replace overgrown existing plants with low growing plants and needed better access to the water box (behind the new spreading yews). Stepping stones now lead to the water box, pyramidal boxwoods and a crape myrtle give height at key corners, and a paver border gives a solid edge between plantings and grass. Deer is a particular menace in this area and so the few proposed plants that attract deer were placed close to the house.

Joanne’s undergraduate degree is in Business Marketing. Her professional experience in this area includes generating and updating flyers, coordinating social events, designing newspaper ads, managing office remodel efforts, conducting marketing research, updating websites, sending out monthly e-newsletters, creating posters, and even designing a donor recognition wall for a local community theatre within a budget.
Designed and helped install the Donor Recognition Wall for Bas Bleu Theatre.
Bas Bleu Theatre Company’s Capital Campaign Goes Public Bas Bleu Theatre Company has been a part of this community for 14 years now. Modeled after the 18th century European literary salons, it started with the goal of enriching the cultural life of Ft. Collins. Since opening its doors in 1992, Bas Bleu has produced, performed, exhibited, or hosted over 475 events and 1200 performances. Our humble theatre has already played a significant role in transforming downtown Fort Collins into a vibrant cultural center. We are very proud of our past, but it is time to look to the future. As many of you already know, in 2004 Bas Bleu Theatre Company outgrew the intimate 49 seat theatre on Pine Street. We found the perfect new home for our company in the historic Giddings Building, but we were unable to purchase the building outright. Time was of the essence as the building wouldn’t last long on the market. Due to the generosity of Tom Sutherland and this community we have been given until the end of this year to finish raising the $1.5 million needed to purchase the Giddings Building. After the purchase of the building, Bas Bleu will need an additional $1.5 million to complete res-torations and renovations. Thanks to Bas Bleu’s many wonderful benefactors we are half-way to reaching the first $1.5 million. We thank all of the contributors to our capital campaign for their support in the past years. Please know that we value your support. Bas Bleu would not be here today without you. In order to finish raising funds, Bas Bleu Theatre Company of-ficially opened its Capital Campaign to the public on April 26, 2006. We ask that you consider donating to our efforts in transforming the historic Giddings Building into a thriving theatre. In our new building we see the chance to create a true Cultural Arts Center in Ft. Collins. Such a center will act as a cat-alyst for the Downtown Development Authority’s vision of creating a cultural district in Old Town and will improve Ft. Collins’ economy by enhancing the cultural tourism industry. Your contribution would go to purchasing, improv-ing, and preserving the historic Giddings Building so that it may become the heart of Ft. Collins’ future.
Wrote Play Summaries for the ‘07 Playbill:GreetingsThis funny family play has been termed “A comic jewel – a joyful holiday lift”. It’s Christmas Eve and Andy is bringing his Jewish atheist fiancée home to meet his very Catholic parents and mentally challenged brother for the first time. It’s going to take some serious Christmas spirit to bring this family back together after the blow-up. “Greetings! Should become as much a part of the fabric of the winter holiday season as It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol.”
The Imaginary InvalidThis classical farce by Moliere with its ribald humor can only be termed “rollicking good fun”. Monsieur Argan, the famous hypochondriac, has come up with a brilliant plan to save on medical bills: he will marry his daughter to his doctor! Unfortunately, his daughter is quite madly in love with someone else. The daughter’s loyal maid and Argan’s brother will have to dissuade Argan from his plan if true love is to conquer all.

The Task: Designate possible locations for a Training Center in Athens, GA. The site had to be at least 2 miles away from any major toxic release sites, within 2 miles of, but at least 1/2 a mile away from, a major road, and located on soil with low erodibility. Data was taken from the Georgia GIS Clearing House, U.S. Census Bureau, and the Geology Class Website.

The Task: Three groups (one of which included Joanne Mendenhall) generated plans for water management around a new classroom on the University of Georgia’s Costa Rica campus. Sam Kelleher, Hattie Johnson & Eric Belgum combined the three plans into the master plan on this page. Joanne Mendenhall and Sam Kelleher identified six key areas of the plan and generated the construction plans on the opposite page.
