HighlightsPlymouth Jazz Club 30th Anniversary SpecialOn Sunday 6th July the club’s founder Tony Harris brings local saxophone star Martin Dale to celebrate the Plymouth Jazz’s 30th Anniversary with an evening of easy listening mainstream jazz. Congratulations to the club and its team on such a great occasion!www.plymouth-jazz-club.org.uk

Pro-Am suite to mark Commonwealth Games in GlasgowAn interesting musical event is happening during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Paul Towndrow wrote his Pro-Am Suite inspired by sporting greatness, often found in the least likely places. It explores synergy between the professional and amateur worlds. The project combines the forces of two Glasgow based big bands, one professional and one amateur, Ryan Quigley Big Band and Byres Road Big Band. The suite will consist of individually titled movements /pieces inspired by true stories of sporting achievement, particularly those which are less well known, or have gone uncelebrated. The stories will

draw from stories/characters from the some of the 17 sporting disciplines of the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 31st July, 8.00pm, tickets £5.

Troyka & Brass Mask double bills with PulcinellaFrench, Toulouse based, band Pulcinella presenting the fusion of jazz, rock, Balkan and tango influences will be touring with Troyka this summer and will join Brass Mask for a London gig on the tour. The performances are the part of the international touring exchange network Match & Fuse programme and they follow the simple formula: a set from each band, followed by the “fuse” of the two ensembles where premieres of compositions from both bands will be performed together. Check our listings to find out where you can catch the double billed gigs.

Juliet Kelly’s Spellbound Stories, Pigfoot and Arun Gosh Indo-Jazz Sextet at MJFIf I were to choose just one day and place to be during the Manchester Jazz Festival, it would definitely be 19 July, Thwaithes Festival Pavilion. Juliet Kelly presents her new programme of songs infused with literary inspirations. Pigfoot (Chris Batchelor, Liam Noble, Oren Marshall and Paul Clarvis) take a rebellious look at the tradition and freshen it up with a joyous and musically exciting twist. Arun Gosh brings the South Asian folk influence into the western jazz tradition and the result is exhilarating. He’ll showcase his ‘A South Asian Suite’, a record that he promoted

last October with support from Jazz Services. All these highly recommended, yet so diverse gigs take place on the same day and under one roof – how convenient!

On the cover Dave Manington’s Riff Raff, touring in July with Jazz Services’ support

Bassist and composer Dave Manington’s Riff Raff group is a wonderfully expressive and coherent collective that has developed over the past decade into a singularly expansive group that brims with original ideas, most recently depicted on their acclaimed 2013 album Hullabaloo (Loop Records). An all-star cast lend their talents to Riff Raff’s musical make-

up, and a formidable frontline (which makes excellent use of Brigitte Beraha’s fertile imagination as both a singer and vocal improviser) combines seamlessly with the rhythm section of Manington, Rob Updegraff and Tim Giles, who have been performing together for over 20 years. The starting point for the group’s compositions may be rooted in improvisational music, but the collective influences of the band members allows Riff Raff to confidently include any number of styles and themes with ease, drawing on classical, folk and electronic music to create a sound that is quirky but engaging, highly individual and distinctly contemporary in its outlook – Riff Raff are a band for the 21st Century and superb ambassadors for the UK’s ever-expanding jazz scene. Apart from the above mentioned members, the band also features Ivo Neame on piano and Tomas Challenger on tenor saxophone.

Look Out for the Young & Talented! In the May issue of Gigs we directed your attention to some fine young musicians when we informed about the first ever BBC Young Musician of the Year – Jazz Award finalists concert television broadcast. It was brought to our attention that these very promising and ambitious young players got a great opportunity to attend the prestigious Brubeck Institute, Summer Jazz School in August 2014. Saxophonist Alexander Bone, who won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award, alongside Jake Labazzi (trumpet) and Tom Smith (saxophone), both finalists of the Award are very excited about this

opportunity and to make this rather costly adventure happen, they are raising funds to help them get to California and pay for their fees. Very impressed with their entrepreneurial spirit and wishing them good luck, we’d like to ask the generous jazz fans to help them out. Please follow the links to Jake and Alexander’s crowd funding websites and chip in! www.gofundme.com/9byeuc www.gofundme.com/AlexanderBoneBrubeck Read more on the NYJO website and, of course, follow the promising young men’s budding careers.www.nyjo.org.uk/nyjo-and-bbc-young-musician-jazz-award
