Pentatonic scales are a bit like a hermaphrodite scale - part scale, part arpeggio. This scale is like a major pentatonic (Root, 9th, 3rd, 5th, 6th) except the 9th is a f9th. Track 34 - C f 9 Pentatonic Due to the symmetric nature of the f9 pentatonic scale, four scales would work for one diminished (or 7f9) chord. Notice in example 14 below how all four f9 pentatonic scales contain only notes that are in a C half-whole diminished scale. Of course, this scale could also be considered an Ef, A, or Gf half-whole diminished scale. Chapter Three - f 9 Pentatonic Scales

This particular pentatonic scale doesn’t get much play but it has a nice sound. Pentatonic scalesare a bit like a hermaphrodite scale - part scale, part arpeggio. This scale is like a majorpentatonic (Root, 9th, 3rd, 5th, 6th) except the 9th is a f9th.

Track 34 - C f 9 Pentatonic

Due to the symmetric nature of the f9 pentatonic scale, four scales would work for onediminished (or 7 f9) chord. Notice in example 14 below how all four f9 pentatonic scales containonly notes that are in a C half-whole diminished scale. Of course, this scale could also beconsidered an E f, A, or G f half-whole diminished scale.

Now, how about some exercises? Yes, absolutely - I’ll bore you some more. I’m going to pair upthe f9 diminished scales, but this time I’ll use pairs a minor third apart: C & E f, G f (Ff) and A.These sound very much like a pattern (because they are).

You can really hear the arpeggio quality to this scale in this exercise. You might notice that thesescales are not always starting from the root. See Melodic Improvising for Guitar by BruceSaunders (Mel Bay Publications #20216).
