HST = Half Square Triangle
Block Assembly - Yankee Puzzle Block
1. Sew the long sides of a Fabric A and E 2-7/8” triangle together to make a HST unit. Square up to 2-1/2”. Make (8).
2. Sew the long sides of a Fabric A and F 2-7/8” triangle together to make a HST unit. Square up to 2-1/2”. Make (4).
3. Sew the long sides of a Fabric E and F 2-7/8” triangle together to make a HST unit. Square up to 2-1/2”. Make (4).
4. Sew Row 1 of the block using the following HST units from left to right as follows, matching the diagram for the rotation of each HST: A/E, A/F, A/E and A/E. Square up to 8-1/2” x 2-1/2”. Make (2).
5. Sew Row 2 of the block using the following HST units from left to right as follows, matching the diagram for the rotation of each HST: A/E, E/F, E/F and A/F. Square up to 8-1/2” x 2-1/2”. Make (2).
6. Sew Row 2 to the bottom of Row 1 to make a half block as shown. Square up to 8-1/2” x 4-1/2”. Make (2).

HST = Half Square Triangle
7. Rotate the second Half Block and sew to the bottom of the Half Block in Step 6 to complete the Yankee Puzzle Block. Square up to 8-1/2”. Make (6).
Block Assembly - Windmill Block
1. Sew the long side of a Fabric A 1-1/2” x 8” strip to the upper short right side of a Fabric B 7-7/8” triangle. Make sure the top edge of the Fabric A strip matches up with the left triangle edge.
The Fabric A strip will be longer than the base of the triangle. Press to the strip and lay a straight ruler along the base of the unit and trim the strip even with the base of the triangle. Make (4).
2. Sew a second unit from Step 8 to the Fabric B (or left side) of the first unit to make a Large Pieced Triangle. Make (2). Sew (2) Large Pieced Triangles together on long diagonal side to complete the block. Square up to 8-1/2”. Make (5).

Block Assembly - Appliqué Block
Applique Blocks: Using your favorite appliqué method, prepare your appliqué pieces. Be sure to add 1/4” seam allowance to the edges if not using a fusible method.
1. Eighth Note Block. Fold a Fabric H 8-1/2” square twice to find the center of the block. Place your Fabric D Eighth Note template onto the background square and stitch in place. Square up to 8-1/2”. Make (3).
2. Double Eighth Note Block. Fold a Fabric C 8-1/2” square twice to find the center of the block. Lay the fabric right side up, making sure you place the direction of the music pattern going horizontally. Place your Fabric D Double Eighth Note template onto the background square and stitch in place. Square up to 8-1/2”. Make (3).
3. Treble Clef Block. Repeat the method used in Step 12 using a Fabric G 8-1/2” square for the back-ground and Fabric D for the Treble Clef C appliqué pattern. Center and place the Treble Clef onto the background square. Prepare the black solid (Fabric D) Templates E and D and place them on top of the Treble Clef where shown on the pattern Key Block. Square up to 8-1/2”. Make (3).
Quilt Center Assembly - Appliqué Block
1. The quilt center is made of 5 horizontal rows of 4 blocks each. Following diagram for placement and rotation of each block, sew each row in the order stated from left to right:
Row 1: Windmill Block, Double Eighth Note Block, Yankee Puzzle Block and Treble Clef Block.

Row 2: Yankee Puzzle Block, Windmill Block, Double Eighth Note Block and Yankee Puzzle Block.
Row 3: Eighth Note Block, Yankee Puzzle Block, Windmill Block and Double Eighth Note Block.
Row 4: Treble Block, Eighth Note Block, Yankee Puzzle Block, and Windmill Block.
Row 5: Windmill Block, Treble Block, Eighth Note Block, and Yankee Puzzle Block.
2. Sew the quilt rows together from top to bottom, starting with Row 1 and ending with Row 5 to complete the quilt center.

Outer Border
1. Sew a Fabric I 4-1/2” x 40” strip to both sides of the quilt center, making sure the black keys of the piano border face inside. Sew a Fabric I 4-1/2” x 40” strip to the top and bottom of the quilt, again, making the black keys line up to the inside of the quilt (see cover photo or diagram below for placement and rotation).
Finishing
1. Layer quilt top, batting and backing together.
2. Baste and quilt as desired.
3. Attach D binding to complete quilt.
