introduction. The first few years of touch on architecture is full of joy, remarkable while regretful. And after all there is clearly a goal for me to go on further and in-depth. Eventually I have known the weaknesses of mine after I started to feel too easily unsure about myself during my design processes. I was not pushed enough definitely, by tutors, by the environment, and by myself as well.
Yet, the projects were really interesting to be dug into although there was not adequate time.
Here, five projects from the three years have been chosen. They are the ones which I felt remarkable. Those which haven’t been put here are not meant valueless, but I do feel these five tell the story enough of my development throughout my bachelor study in the University of Hong Kong.

THE LIVING UNIT a row-house design project
DATE / JAN 2006TYPE / INDIVIDUAL BUILDING DESIGN
SUPERVISOR / BILLY TAM
This project requires us to provide ourselves imaginary clients with given requirements and design a row house within an imaginary site with the following parameters :
MAXIMUM VOLUME / 500 CUBIC METERSMAXIMUM HEIGHT / 8 METERSMAXIMUM WIDTH / 6 METERS
FAMILY NUMBERS OF THE CLIENT / 4
SELF-DEFINED CLIENT : A MUSIC FAMILY
6 F I R S T Y E A R
T H E L I V I N G U N I T
THE CLIENT is a family with four members : a couple and two kids. The mother is a Music Teacher who has her instrumental lessons at home. The husband and kids should be the ones using the house least the time.
MUSIC ROOM --> THE FOCUS OF THE HOUSE
ARROW which is dark thick represents VISITOR CIRCULATION, while dotted arrow represents PRIVATE CIRCULATION for family members. The two circulation pattern is separated, avoiding the disturbance caused by the visitors - the students - to the family.
MUSIC ROOM is connected to the Master’s bedroom as the mother uses it mostly. The kids’ bedrooms are facing to the backyard for better views. The central skylight is shared by the living room and the Master’s bedroom together.
FRONT FACADE is crucial, which should be strong enough and easily recognized and identified as a House of Music. Hence the music room, with a taller room height, is placed at the front facing the main street.

DATE / OCT 2006TYPE / INDIVIDUAL BUILDING DESIGN
SUPERVISOR / EVE TRACY
TASK : To design a middle school at a site within an urban context.
SITE : Along the waterfront area, which is near a fabric of residential buildings.
MAIN IDEA : To create a connection between the waterfront and the inland, by means of establishing an attraction node for usage of waterfront spaces by citizens.

THE SITE is located at the north-
western coastline of the Hong Kong
Island. It is where an old and abandoned
butchery existed. Just next to the site is a
huge park (1) which is often used by the
residents in the nearby community (2).
Around the site are several public buildings
and facilities (3). Combining all the site
forces, the site potentially has a character
of being a public space along waterfront
within the district. (4)

URBAN VOIDS BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND WATERFRONT
With a site having potentials in being a new centre of public activities along the waterfront, a school programme which is more likely to be interactive is introduced - a Performing Art School.
MAIN CONCEPT of the design is to revitalize the waterfront area with more culturally-related activities from the school and to connect the inland community to it.

SITE CONTEXT
THE SCHEME is developed into something having a strong focus-like form on plan. At the centre point is the ‘stage’ of the performing art school. The functional spaces of the building are ‘elevated’ as blocks facing the sea on top of the ‘focus’ with landscaping.
THE STAGE can be used privately by the students while it can be publicly viewed by the community. Somehow, an interaction and connection is established. The focus attracts people through the building to the waterfront.

People is attracted towards the stage yet they are sloping down until they cannot see the stage.
After lessons student would enjoy a tremendous seaview when they come out from classrooms.
People can just hear sounds while they have to pass the stage and go up to the waterfront audience area.
The stage is shared by private (students) for performances and the public (audience/residents) coming from the community.
The landscapes not only enhance rhythm of movements but also provide seats and shelters (by trees) for them to watch the performances.
At the waterfront area the landscapes still keep their role in offering seats and shelters for several existing activities such as fishing.

SITE ANALYSIS
OBJECTIVE
To study on and investigate an existing architecture with systematic approaches in their design.
SYSTEMATIC APPROACH
Instead of getting ideas from site, a system related to modules generation is developed before any site context study.

FLEXIBLE BUILDING SYSTEMS
INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS, such as columns, external walls, slabs and windows, are grouped according to their life and production path for producing different modules.
A STRUCTURAL SKELETON of matrix is built to provide sidewalks, gardens and open spaces as the neighbourhood spaces that interweaves the individual houses that are inserted within.
It also provides all BUILDING SERVICES required, which helps to provide a better maintenance and centralized effort toward ecology and conservation.
INDIVIDUAL HOUSES are inserted later - infill - designed by other architects/designers, ensuring a variety of house types.

BASIC UNIT of hostel room is a 5.4m x 5.4m cube made up of 8 smaller cubes.
By eliminating the smaller cubes in different ways, various types of rooms are generated.
The voids of the big cube volume become the circulation spaces and neighbourhood spaces in the hostel.
Different types of rooms result in different spatial perceptions by the users.

CHOSEN LOCATION FOR HOSTELTwo blocks of hostel in linear form are put on the site in a converging manner reacting to the site. The porous membrane-like building offers accesses near the western entrance to allow “diffusion” of human into the park down the slope.
The two converging blocks address the looping circulation.
Floating decks are inserted perpendicularly into the blocks. They become the central gathering spaces (cafe) for the users in the hostel.
Two accesses are created on western side of the park.
Down the slope, the first bridge provides access to the park through the hostel, allowing some interactions between the pedestrian and the users in the hostel.
The second bridge offers a direct access to the park although it is also going through the hostel.

SLANTED SURFACE FOR VISUAL IMPACT
FIRST IDEA is to revitalize the existing building with the new introduced programme of an artist village.
From the site study it is found that the surrounding area is potentially prone to be developed into commercial areas. Hence, the art-related commercial programme could be a probable future development for the existing building if an artist village is introduced on top.

HORIZONTAL RHYTHM OF MOVEMENT VISUAL CONSTRAINTS
SECOND IDEA is about the design of the exhibition spaces of the artists’ village.
Usually visitors experience a rhythm of horizontal movement as they move from one art piece to another. Yet they are confined by the designated route by visual constraints.
Now the exhibition space is redefined into various levels which allow visitors to see the whole image of the exhibition, while keeping the idea of having a route.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SITE
By the end of the 19th century, number of houses and schools for nobles were built, which are the most signicficant neo-classical architecture of Macau, known as the “8 Houses”.
These heritages are now all reconverted or reconstructed for new purposed now which are Health Centre, Central Library, Historical Archives, Tap Seac Gallery, Cultural Institute.
4 sports fields including a football field were later built for public uses. Cultural activities also took place. The playground was of often use.
However, in 2005, the Tap Seac area was totally reconverted to new Tap Seac Square, with large proportion of open spaces for public use.

THE MAIN CONCEPT of this design is to integrate the new media centre with the cultural heritage buildings.Connections would be established directly in-between the new and old with programmatic considerations.Media and Broadcasting functions would be integrated with the existing public facilities.
MOREOVER, instead of usual method of putting the building block at opposite side of the huge public plaza, the building massings are sticked closely to the heritage buildings.
A street is to be re-created as a kind of respect to the heritage buildings.

The exhibition was held smoothly and great with good feedbacks. It has been placed at the Fringe Club, a famous art gallery in Hong Kong, for a month. Now it is moved to another exhibition space which is an artist pub in Central.
It was certainly a great experience for me, for my colleagues as well as the visitors. And it is meaningful and remarkable that this kind of voicing-out activities suggest new ideas for our home our cities while it enlivens architects’ (sometimes boring) working life.

afterwords.Everything is full of joy, for the three years and also for the few weeks for this portfolio. If a brief evaluation has to be made, I should say the most obvious thing is that in every project there were really not enough processes on design studies and researches.
Sometimes I was told that I do have inspirational ideas, but I was someone reluctant to explore, and I tended to choose some easy ways to go instead. And that’s the major problem I have to tackle in the future. It is with no doubt that with the technical skills of mine I surely can explore much more.
Everything is just a start. I am glad that from this portfolio I see where to go ahead. If you do have any comments on anything, feel free to contact me. Good day, and thanks.
