Data Matter

One cannot practice medicine, make

personal healthcare or business decisions

without accurate data.

50%

OF MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS UNPROVEN

ONLY 35% KNOWN TO BE BENEFICIAL

Fundamental Assumptions • The way we investigate medication risks is flawed

• Not gender specific: clinical testing before 1998 did not include women; drug development before 2014 only included male animals

• Too narrow in assessment of what constitutes side effects

• Too static: only experts can recognize/report a side effect

• Too broad in the analysis of population based risks, when what we need are methods to assess each patient’s individual risks

Resulting in• Underestimate of real risk for any given

individual, but especially, for women

• Inability to assess medication, health, and lifestyle interactions

• A lack of recognition of important side effects by all involved

• Lives lost to predictable side effects, had anyone looked.

We Need• A more open conversation about side effects

and risks

• A more comprehensive approach to understanding drug effects

• A better, more personal math to describe the risks

I need to know that given my health characteristics and my lifestyle what my risks are

Page 9: Japanese presentation

Risks have numbers (weights)• Identify the side effects and the patterns

• Patient characteristics

• Symptom expression

• Event occurrence

• Predictors of impending event

• Find the math• Set the algorithms

• Understand individual risk • Given XXY characteristics, what is my risk for blood clot?

Research Philosophy• Listen to patients • Self-reported case histories have tremendous value

• Discovery comes from unfiltered interaction • Patients, researchers, and medical professionals

• No silver bullets just tipping points• Health and disease are complex, dynamic algorithms

• Nothing happens in a vacuum• Everything is connected

Hormones Matter• ~1000 articles published to

date• 3-4 articles per week• Patient histories and research

analysis

• 70,000-100,000 views per month

• 150 guest contributors/writers • 18 PhDs, 5 MDs, 2 DPTs

Patient stories

Research

More stories and research

Patient stories present research questions and patterns

Leads to mechanism research, then to online survey research

Online studies inspire more stories, publications, and collaborations

Integrated

Insight Accrued•Medication reactions • Attack the thyroid (Hashimoto’s)• Systemic, not limited to intended target • Derail mitochondrial function • Induce/exacerbate nutrient deficiencies (which

further derail mitochondrial functioning)• Thiamine, Magnesium, CoQ10, Vitamin D, B12,

others

• Rare mutations are not so rare (just unmeasured)

Page 16: Japanese presentation

Current Project• Birth Control and Blood Clot Study

• Privately funded, multiphase project to develop risk calculator

• Phase 1 completed; 3 reports published online, more coming

Major finding: among women who develop birth control induced blood clots, in

younger, more active women the clots are more likely to be fatal than in older less

active women

• Phase 2 data collection in progress

Page 17: Japanese presentation

In Review• Lupron Side Effect Study• ~1000 respondents • 1st report published online; additional reports

forthcoming

Major finding: moderate to severe global side effects affecting 15-90% women depending on symptom,

with only non-clinically significant, temporary reduction of the symptoms for which it is prescribed.

Some side effects appear to be chronic.

Ongoing Projects• Gardasil Study

• 1900 respondents, open

• Fluoroquinolone Study

• 1600 respondents, open

• Hysterectomy Outcomes

• 1500 respondents, open

• Oral Contraceptive Use

• 900, closed, analyzed, unpublished
