“Happy New Year” from the SouthEast Seattle Senior Center! As your favorite center and ever grow-ing community, we are excited about plans for 2019. As many of you know, we are beginning our first year as an independent center, having recently and joyfully separated from Sound Generations.

We are reaching out to new groups, including LGBTQ and Veterans, as well as continuing to embrace our existing groups, people from all backgrounds and perspectives.

We continue to stay open on Tuesday evening for Adaptive Yoga (for those with extra physical chal-lenges), and are seeking to add activities to that evening’s offerings. If there are classes or activities you would like to see take place on Tuesday evenings, please share the information with me.

Our Social Worker, Jaime Clark, continues to address some of the harder questions life can hand us, and designing creative programming for those with dementia and other issues they want to resolve in a group setting. And we are proud to be serving those who serve others, as we continue to offer support to caregivers.

We also keep it fun around here, with weaving, meditation, movies, chess, and more. But we always want to know how our center can be the most useful, fun and meaningful to you. Stop by to visit – we may be having a special presentation on a topic you are interested in. Please plan to attend our upcoming Coffee with the Executive Director where we share information and exchange ideas.

I hope you take some time to check out the contents of this newsletter and share it with someone who might benefit – we all need to stay active and I know first-hand, and we are offering activities that are relevant to many different needs and interests. Check it out, come on in, and surprise yourself by trying something new.

“Greetings!” My hope is that you had a wonderful holiday season and you are ready for an

exciting new year – 2019. We are just 2 months from celebrating our one-year anniversary of in-

dependence from Sound Generations. And we couldn’t be more excited as we continue to see

the benefit of having made the decision to separate.

Please plan to attend the Annual Members Meeting at 10am on January 22, where you will learn

more about our successes in 2018 as well as our plans for 2019. We are sure you will be pleased.

Two of our popular and favorite activities are coming up in February: the 12th Annual Wine and

Food Gala, with a fundraising goal of $40,000. We need your support to achieve this goal for

the Center; and the ever-popular Rainbow Bingo whose theme for February 2019 is Pajama Rama.

We have lots of activities and programs scheduled at the Center, but they will only be successful if you support them. Your sup-

port is needed and appreciated in all our activities.

As we end 2018 and begin a new year, I extend a big “Thank You” to our Board Members and our Staff, and to our committee

members and volunteers, who continue to work hard to keep SouthEast Seattle Senior Center the wonderful welcoming place

that it is.

Location: Multi-Purpose Room; Clinician: Mark Bryant; Cost: Free In your home, are you at risk of falling? Participate in one of two sched-uled home assessments, by completing a questionnaire at the Center with Mark Bryant. The questionnaire will identify areas that might make you vulnerable to a fall. The second assessment will be your opportunity to evaluate the home assessment by answering whether it helped you and identifying other ways where the Center may be able to help. SESSC ACTIVITY CANCELLATION POLICY SESSC Classes may be cancelled if minimum attendance is not reached one week in advance of activity. Please sign up and pay for activities one week in advance. All classes, programs, and activities are subject to change. This policy is not applicable to joint activities with Seattle Parks.

All participants must be ambulatory (i.e., mobile) to go on an SESSC trip, and must be able

to take care of their personal needs.

Payment for trips is due upon registration, whether done in person, at the Front Desk or

via phone. For your convenience, MasterCard and VISA credit cards are accepted over the phone to pay for tips.

If you must cancel a trip, you will be reimbursed by check, if cancelled at least three days

prior to the trip. Failure to cancel a paid trip in the time specified will be considered a donation to the Center.

Drivers will not wait for late-comers. You must be at the designated location for pick up

before the scheduled departure time.

Volunteer Corner

Rhonda Williams - Rhonda is the daughter of an SESSC mem-

ber, Etta Williams. Rhonda may be a bit shy but she is a real

asset behind the scenes in the kitchen, helping to put dishes

away and other housekeeping tasks.

Ernie Lee - Ernie is our neighbor, and loves bingo here! He

just wanted to lend a hand, and we are so glad he did. Thanks

for helping in our Community Dining program!

Deanna and Larry Book - Deanna and Larry are retired, and

chose us to spend their valuable time, giving back to their

community by volunteering as servers in our Community Din-

ing Program.

Linda Harris - Long-time friend and volunteer at the center,

Linda now comes to us through AARP. Say hi to her at the

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Store. Welcome Back!

We need your HELP, ESPECIALLY with the Community Dining Lunch Program

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation

in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith,

our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of

tasks, like food preparation and dish washing. One of the

perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch

program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch!

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide

the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various

special events such as the Lifetime Members appreciation

event, Annual Wine and Food Gala and Rainbow Bingo. Be a

part of the group that truly makes it happen at the SouthEast

Seattle Senior Center.

Volunteers for Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for

Bingo! Help verify a winning bingo, sell specials, or call num-

bers.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: Be a part of the team that plays

a major role in providing revenue for the Center. Remember,

the store is open Monday - Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Birthday Lunch: We need two volunteers to devote two hours of their time setting up for the birthday lunch on the third

Wednesday from 3:00pm - 4:00pm and cleaning up after birthday lunch on the third Thursday.

There are other volunteer opportunities available. Stop by Kate Harkin’s office or call her at

206-722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!


Our very own thrift store, the Cheap Chickadee, is right

next door to the Center and your “go-to” source for deep

discounts on clothing, household goods, and all kinds of

curiosities! Stop by and check us out. We just might

have that special item you’ve been seeking. We grate-

fully accept donations that are clean and in good work-

ing order during store hours. All sales benefit the

SESSC.

Bargain Bag Days - 1st Tuesday and Thurs-

day each month — All you can fit, up to 10

items (@ $3.00 and under) in a brown bag

for $5.00.

Senior Members’ Day - 1st Wednesday of

the month — SESSC members receive 40%

DENTAL HYGIENICS 1st Wednesdays, January, March, June, September 8:30am-3:00pm Location: SESSC Wellness Center Dental Hygienist: Deb Fredrikson

SESSC offers dental hygiene care through Dental Hygienics. This is a fee-

based service. No medical coupons or sliding scale, as rates are lower than

most dental private practices. Appointments will be made through the

dental hygienist. Please come to the Center's Front Desk to pick up an

information packet, or call 206-948-7355 to speak with Deb Fredrikson,

Dental Hygienist.

BARTELL DRUGS eSCRIP PROGRAM You can support the Center by making purchases at any Bartell Drugs with an eSCRIP card. The cards are free to obtain and the Center can receive up to 4% back from all purchases you make. It’s a win-win deal! Contact Alex at 206-722-0317 for more information.

and Fridays on the second floor from 2:00pm - 3:30pm, and Sundays at

6:00pm.

GOLD CARDS You can receive discounts from local businesses who participate in this program with a Gold Card. Drop by the Front Desk to get one.

MINOR HOME REPAIR Sound Generation’s Minor Home Repair program offers low-cost repairs for minor plumbing, electrical, or carpentry problems. Homeowners of all ages in Seattle, Shoreline, and Bellevue are eligible. Please call 206-448-5751 to coordinate your services.
