2018 was an outstanding year for Madison Public Library Foundation.

Many individuals, businesses, foundations and organizations deepened

their commitment to helping our libraries respond to community needs

through major contributions to our funding priorities. We’re thankful to

all who believe in the power of libraries and support our approach to

solving community problems through library efforts.

nonfiction collections display will be revamped,

Longtime Madison Public Library

librarian Barbara Williams, who

served as a dedicated Central

Library volunteer after her

retirement in 2005, left a $214,798

unrestricted gift to the foundation’s

endowment. Carol Froistad, a

retired librarian who worked closely

with Williams, said Williams enjoyed

supporting various literacy efforts and progressive

causes across Madison. “She very much wanted to

make sure her money went to causes she believed

in,” Froistad said. “She loved and believed in

libraries, and particularly in literacy.”

In addition to her own gift, Williams’ obituary

requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be

made to library collections, which resulted in even

more gifts from her friends and family.

r Making JusticeThe Bubbler at Madison Public Library designs

and leads programming for Making Justice,

an arts-based learning model for at-risk and

court-involved teens that includes weekly

workshops and an artist-in-residence opportunity

in the juvenile detention center and county’s

shelter home. The program addresses the wide

black-white educational achievement gap and high

per-capita black juvenile arrest and incarceration

rate in Madison.

Offered in collaboration with artists, educators

and activists, Making Justice encourages

engagement and self-expression via graphic and

3-D art, photography, spoken word, performance,

video and life skills projects. While participants

focus on creating a final product, workshop

leaders strive to cultivate relationships with

the teens, and help them make community

Dream BUSMadison Public Library and Dane County Library

Service are collaborating to bring a new, fully

staffed and fully stocked readmobile called the

Dream Bus to five under-served neighborhoods

weekly beginning in spring 2019. The mobile library

will operate solely on private support for four

years, with the hope of Dane County and the City

of Madison funding it thereafter.

The Dream Bus will bring collections, exterior

programming space and free Wi-Fi into areas in

which residents, especially kids, face barriers to

accessing the libraries and its resources. Librarians

will circulate books, provide library cards, fulfill

holds and host early childhood activities. The

Dream Bus will visit five locations weekly:

• Allied Drive

• Leopold Elementary School

• Park Edge/ Park Ridge (near Elver Park)

• Reindahl Park

• Vera Court/ Kennedy Heights

Goodman South Madison RemodelingMore than 50 local kids and teens worked with

hip-hop architect Michael Ford, Engberg Anderson

Architects and staff at Goodman South Madison Library to redesign several of the library’s areas

and select furnishings. The project includes

new carpeting and repainting throughout the

entire facility; a new entryway with a one-stop

service desk; digital signage; new children’s

space furniture; and a larger teen area, including

a recording station, an iPad bar, a “mediascape”

gaming and movie station, comfortable mobile

seating and a reimagined group meeting space.

The remodeling will conclude in summer 2019.

Meadowridge & Lakeview Kitchen ProgramsFrom after-school snack programs and cooking

classes to community suppers, food programming

is bustling at Meadowridge and Lakeview libraries.

Young residents often arrive at the libraries hungry

after school, which prompted the foundation to

seek donors for creative, need-based snack and

food literacy programs. The libraries host local

chefs, including Lily Kilfoy, who lead classes for

kids, teens and patrons of all ages. Other classes

unite library patrons through ethnic foods and

cultural experiences.

Pinney Capital CampaignLibrary, foundation and city leaders broke ground

on the new Pinney Library at a special ceremony

in early April. The new facility, located in the

mixed-use Royster Corners development on

Cottage Grove Road, will feature a large program

room, an outdoor program space, updated

technology, dedicated teen and children’s spaces,

and a drive-through book drop. It will open in

spring 2020. So far, the foundation has raised

$1,363,658 for the new library, with $235,000

remaining. All gifts beyond the $1.6 million goal will

go to the Pinney endowment.

Black Men Run, Brown Boys Read – Meadowridge Pilot Aims to reduce health disparities and improve literacy in Madison while also creating a safe space for black males ages 8-16.

“Mini-grants” provide a source of funding for miscellaneous projects and needs that arise throughout the year. The foundation’s 2018 mini-grants totaled $17,000. They included:

Whoopensocker!The Bubbler at Madison Public Library hosted four Whoopensocker! theater education workshops for elementary school-age students at Pinney, Sequoya, Hawthorne and Meadowridge libraries last summer.

Developed by Dr. Erica Halverson from the UW-Madison School of Education, Whoopensocker! builds creativity, expression, writing and collaboration through performing and creative arts exercises. Kids created and acted out short stories and skits, which Whoopensocker! teaching artists wove into cabaret-style shows — complete with costumes, props and musical accompaniment — at Central and Sequoya libraries. Part of the grant paid for the transportation of kids from Goodman Community Center and the Salvation Army to watch the shows.

Munch + Make Middle School Book ClubThe Bubbler at Madison Public Library held monthly Munch + Make book clubs at O’Keeffe and Whitehorse middle schools last spring, with each session featuring a maker project and book talks. Activities included button making, screenprinting Libraries are for Everyone shirts, comic creation and journaling. The clubs celebrated the end of the school year with parties at Pinney Library.

The Wisconsin Book Festival’s 16th year brought 108 events

to 14,271 people. The fall four-day celebration took place

October 11–14 at Central Library and other downtown venues.

The weekend drew nearly 5,500 people to 67 events involving

85 authors, with an expanded effort to include a broad range

in age, gender, sexuality and race. C-SPAN2 BookTV provided

live coverage and a call-in segment on Saturday, October 13,

allowing the festival to reach a national audience.

The festival’s growing reputation for high-caliber events

helped it land the world’s best-selling author, James Patterson,

to give a talk at Overture Center for the Arts in advance of

the festival celebration. He spoke about his latest Max Einstein

youth science adventure novel and thriller, Ambush. Other

notable festival authors included Jamel Brinkley, Tommy

Orange, Jan Brett, Megan McDonald, Rebecca Traister and

Carol Anderson.

The cover illustration and illustrated typographic headlines throughout the report were created by Taylor Wright Rushing, an Artist-in-Residence in the Bubbler at Madison Public Library. A Tacoma, Wash. native, he received his B.A. at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. Taylor then spent time as a professional glassblower in the South Puget Sound, a carpenter on the southern coast of the United Kingdom, and an old-time string band member in Austin, Texas. He will soon receive his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Taylor’s residency focuses

on the absolute accessibility of culture and knowledge from the lens of self-taught makers, hobo whittlers, punk rock zinesters, shamans and librarians. He emphasizes the use of humble materials, cartoons and down-home crafts.
