Greetings and Happy New Year! Maybe your Christmas tree and decorations are all down and packed neatly away. Or maybe you, like me, enjoy keeping the decorations up as long as possible to prolong the holiday season or until I can find the time and energy to put everything away! In January, we celebrate Epiphany, the coming of the wise ones with their gifts for the infant, Jesus. In one of my favorite books about Advent and Christmas, The Season of the Nativity, Sybil MacBeth describes Epiphany as “the season of the year when we recognize the significance of Jesus, when his identity as the Christ will begin to manifest itself beyond the boundaries of a small town in a small country.” One of the main symbols of this season is a star because it was a star that shone brightly, guiding the magi to Jesus. I love the idea that the light of Christ shines during one of the darkest months of our year. The worship song, “Shine, Jesus, Shine,” speaks about this. Sing along as you read!

Lord, the light of your love is shining In the midst of the darkness, shining

Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us Set us free by the truth you now bring us

Shine on me, shine on me Shine, Jesus, shine

Fill this land with the Father's glory Blaze, Spirit, blaze

Set our hearts on fire Flow, river, flow

Flood the nations with grace and mercy Send forth your word

Lord, and let there be light This song and the season of Epiphany help me to remember that Jesus Christ is the light that shines for each of us, bringing hope, grace, and new life. May the light of Christ shine brightly in and through your life this year.
