WELCOME

In 2019 we embark on a new era for the Centre as we welcome new programmes organised and presented by Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival to the Centre.

This means that in addition to our well established and very popular programme of theatre, concerts, ceilidhs and dance events; and our weekly activities including ESOL, Carpet Bowling, Singing groups, Yoga, Drawing, Painting, Tai Chi and much more; we have new jazz, blues, general music, Carnival, dance, costume and puppet making activities, many of which will bring a host of international

performers and professional artists to the Centre. We look forward to welcoming many new participants and audiences from the local community, and from the local community, across Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland.

St Bride’s Community Group is a registered charity which has been in place for over 40 years and comprises a group of volunteers who manage St Bride’s in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council.

STRATA are one of the most exciting and innovative bands on the Scottish jazz scene. Pushing the boundaries of the genre, they create a new unique sound combining high-energy polyrhythms, improvisation and collective groove. Antoine Pierre has a big ambition with his music, and he seems to always pull it off. Grand sweeping statements with long arching melodies, hypnotic grooves; expressive, captivating musicianship; all packed with energy and style.

“Juggling with polyrhythms and polyphonies like mad DJ’s” (Jazz Magazine). Aka Moon fuse jazz, rock, world music, and avant-garde. Their collective interplay is rhythmically complex, moving from Balkans to Bach, from Cuba to Scarlatti to their collaborations with the famous Aka Pygmies. Laura MacDonald’s History of Sax: Scotland’s top female jazz saxophonist showcases a new project tracing the history of jazz saxophone from Sonny Rollins to today.

Toine Thys Trio feat Hervé Samb: Groove, rhythm and feel are central to this saxophone-organ-drums band, but especially with guest guitarist, Samb (Youssou N’Dour, Lisa Simone & Salif Keïta). The classic soul-blues sound that you’d expect is lifted into a new contemporary world: intoxicating melodies; multi-cultural influences and brilliant soloing. Trumpeter Colin Steele writes the contemporary anthems of a sophisticated Scotland. His music is a joyous celebration of melody and rhythm “beautifully conceived, mellow and melodic” (The Observer).

A thrilling five-star international Gypsy jazz line-up. Manouche or Django-jazz was invented, apparently out of thin air, in the early 1930s by the miraculous Belgian gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Tonight we celebrate his legacy with two exciting projects

Violin superstar Tcha Limberger - “the polymath virtuoso king of Gypsy music” (The Times) - is the leader of Les Violons de Bruxelles – an all-

string swing orchestra that turn the standard Hot Club ensemble on its head with two violins, viola, double bass and just one guitar. Caressing the

strings at the fiercest tempos they deliver virtuosity, verve and panache.

Fronted by fiddle player and sophisticated songstress, Seonaid Aitken, Rose Room recreate the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris of the 30s

and 40s with Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. “Stupendous gypsy jazz, and a superb singer” (Scotsman).

St Bride’s is transformed into an African cultural centre for a day. The café is bursting with flavours: the most authentic African dishes of soups, chicken, rice, sides of beef pies, puff puffs, plantain… and of course the infamous hot and spicy pepper soup, chicken suya and flavored jollof rice. ”YOU DON’T KNOW IT TILL YOU TASTE IT”.

Cynthia Gentle salutes Mirian Makeba; Dancehall workshops with the brilliant Divine Tasinda; short films presented by the Africa In Motion Festival; Lisa Williams talking about Black History in Edinburgh; and African market stalls with crafts, fashion, hairdressing, and much more… all ages welcome, See www.stbridescentre.com for full schedule and tickets.

We’re in Downtown Lagos, at the coolest place in town. The Sugarhill team have sent over their best selectors and mix masters, legendary for dance floor filling great music, from Afrobeat, soul, and r’n’b, to classic hip hop. Samedia Shebeen are coming over too, with their super-hip tropical soundtrack of old and new African sounds, and some spice from the Caribbean and beyond. Then live on stage, the best Afro-Roots band in Scotland, Ramuyapiko, with their infectious mix of Afrobeat shot with reggae, hip hop and soul. Muya and DJ Ramsy have a strong message: unity, solidarity and brotherhood.

AFRO KULTURE DAY

AFRO LIVE!

The weekend kicks off with one of EJBF’s famous three band line-ups, and the three electric blues guitar players who take their inspiration from classic blues. Sandy Tweeddale, Jed Potts and Al Brown have styles rooted in pre-rock blues, and they’ll present their current bands, with Øyvind Stølefjell’s Otis Spann style piano guesting with Jed, and Big Jon Atkinson adding very authentic vintage 1950s blues styles on guitar, harmonica and more to The Blueslighters.

UK Blues Challenge winner, Kyla’s voice offers a stunning example of the soul singer’s art: turning up the heat by degrees, lulling and charming before unleashing emotional catharsis, and blurring the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old. Glasgow-based guitar power trio,Blue Milk cover all the bases from the Delta to 1960s blues rock.

Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival launches a new annual winter Blues Festival – dedicated to the best of the Scottish Blues scene. Each year we’re going to ask a leading blues musician to

select a programme and first up is Scotland’s champion of classic blues, Richard O’Donnell. He’s selected “the very best Scottish blues

musicians in more traditional and authentic styles of blues music”, and with the added bonus of two

of the very best International blues artists in the classic style, as guests for the weekend: Øyvind Stølefjell and Big Jon Atkinson.

Authentic old blues styles, evoking back porch parties and Mississippi delta roots from Richard O’Donnell’s acoustic blues wizards, Mud In Your Ear. Guitarist and vocalist Toby Mottershead plays old-time blues, roots and ragtime of the pre-war era.

Another great triple bill, kicked off by acoustic blues guitar/vocalist, Allan Jones, recreating early blues authenticity. Blues n Trouble leader and long-time Scottish Blues great, Elliott, is in Duo format, singing and playing harmonica, with guitarist, Tweeddale, before one of the best electric blues bands on the current scene take us to Chicago and Memphis, fronted by the supercharged vocals and harmonica of Gary Martin.

Capturing the essence of 50s Chicago Blues & Swing and influenced by such Blues greats as T-Bone Walker, BB King, Little Walter and Sonny Terry, Baby Isaac deliver a powerful and dynamic mix of Blues, Swing, R & B and Jazz – and feature Big Jon guesting for one set.

OF THE BLUES THE ROOTS

OF THE BLUES THE ROOTS

Across the American Blues scene there’s no young musician who stands out more as the keeper of the Blues flame in the 21st Century. Jon Atkinson sings; plays low-down and nasty, bottle-neck slide guitar; full on early Chicago style lead; and gut-bucket harmonica. Mid-century electric blues is a specialism, and he plays everything from in the pocket Memphis/Sun covers to wild interpretations of raw post war Chicago gems.

Check out the next generation of Scottish blues stars - compelling vocals from Nicole Smit; hard core old-style acoustic blues from Thomas Lucas; and crossover “Scottish-folk–blues” from Gus Munro.

A real rarity. A grand piano, and four brilliant blues pianists. They’ll remind us how the Blues sounds on an old fashioned acoustic piano, and evoke memories of many piano greats, from Otis Spann and Sunnyland Slim, to Pinetop Perkins.
