The Swine Situation Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age

classification; volume of production; supply and disposition; and, monthly average farmgate,

wholesale and retail prices.

This report is released every September covering the first half of the year (January to June) as the

reference period.

The data for this Report were collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through the two (2)

major surveys, namely:

1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the four (4)

replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS). It consists of 15,069

sample households in 1,051 sample barangays nationwide; and,

2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 1,262

independent farms as of July 2017. A swine farm is considered commercial when it has a

capacity of at least 21 heads of adult swine or 10 adults and 22 heads of youngs.

Both surveys are conducted every quarter simultaneously in all provinces.

Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the Livestock and Poultry sub-sector is the

Survey of Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (SSHPDP)1. This covers around 1,387

Accredited (AAA, AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is

undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

Concepts and Definitions

Backyard Farm - any farm or household whether farming or non-farming raising at least one head of animal and does not qualify as a commercial farm. Commercial Farm - any livestock farm which satisfied at least one of the following conditions:

Tending at least 21 heads of adult and zero head of young

Tending at least 41 heads of young animals

Tending at least 10 heads of adult and 22 heads of young Death/Losses - the number of animals died due to pests, diseases and calamities. Farmgate Price - the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale, net of freight.

NOTES --Continued

Inventory - the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.

Beginning Inventory is the number of live animals at beginning of the reference period i.e. for January to March, the beginning inventory is as of January 1.

Ending Inventory is the number of live animals at the end of the reference period i.e. for January to March, the remaining inventory is as of April 1.

Imports - the number of live animals originating from foreign country i.e. live breeders and Feeders recorded by the Bureau of Animal Industry – National Veterinary Quarantine Services. Meanwhile, meat importation data came from the Trade Statistics Division (TSD) of PSA. Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRME) - slaughterhouses, meat processing plants, meat cutting plants and cold storages that are allowed to operate by the city/municipal government but are not accredited by the NMIS. Retail Price refers to the price at which retailers sell their goods or commodities to consumers in the marketplace. It is expressed in peso per kilogram. Slaughterhouses (SH) - premises that are approved and registered by the NMIS and LGUs in which food animals are slaughtered for human consumption. Slaughtered in Slaughterhouses - the number of animals slaughtered in accredited (AAA, AA, A) slaughterhouses including number of animals slaughtered in LRMEs.

Supply and Disposition - a framework that explains the population dynamics of animals in the farm including born live, imports, deaths and losses, number of animals slaughtered in the farm/household and sold live for slaughter which serves as supporting information or indicators of the volume of production estimates.

Value of Production - the value of the animal with reference to its farmgate price. It is derived by multiplying the volume of production by its farmgate price. Volume of Production - the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight Wholesale Price - the price of unprocessed agricultural commodities which are traded in major local/provincial market centers. In this report, it highlights the wholesale price in Metro Manila because it is a demand area. It is expressed in peso per kilogram.
