DISTRICT GOVERNOR LT. DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Happy New Year Chesapeake District!! As all of you are gearing up in your clubs for 2017 the district is also beginning plans for district wide events. We had our joint cabinet meeting on Sunday January 15, 2017 and began talking about these upcoming events. Plans are underway for the 3rd Annual Golf Tournament, our District Raffle, Ad Sales and the picnic. You will be hearing more about these activities as they get closer. On the heels of that meeting some of the district traveled to Tennessee for the National Convention. I believe there were 20 plus members from the District in attendance. Congratulations to the Madison Club & Pete Arnett for receiving awards. I will bring them to the Presidents meeting and hopefully I’ll be able to present them at that meeting.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several clubs and I look forward to visiting more. As you begin planning your calendar’s for the year, I hope you will let Pete know so the information can be put in the newsletter and that you will send it to Scott or myself so we can place it on the district website. We’d also like pictures of your events to add to the website.

As individual clubs you do outstanding work in your communities and I know your communities are better places because of that hard work. The new 2017 club officers have been given a great responsibility, to lead their clubs and help each club make a difference in their community. Along with that and in order to make 2017 a great year these officers need the support of all the members of their clubs. The responsibility of individual members doesn’t stop with electing the officers, your job has just started.

Greetings Fellow Ruritans, Let me start by extending my sincere appreciation for affording me the opportunity to again serve as your Lt. Governor in 2017. I truly appreciate the trust and confidence you have in me. There are many challenges facing our district and together we will meet these challenges and advance our organization. The success of any organization hinges on its ability to effectively communicate. We must all work together to improve communication between your district cabinet, our membership, and the general public. First, it is vital that all club secretaries submit their club’s monthly reports accurately and on time. Governor Gloria and I need to be constantly aware of membership trends and club activity. We depend on your monthly reports to compile this information. In addition, our district benefits financially from monthly reports being submitted on time to Ruritan National. Second, I encourage each club to fully utilize their Zone Governors as an additional vehicle of communication. Important information will continue to be mailed (or emailed) to each club as necessary however, Zone Governors will also be asked to follow up and reinforce this information as they visit. At the same time, your ideas and opinions are important to all of us in the district cabinet. While the phone lines to me and other district officers are always open for your questions, concerns, and suggestions, I encourage you to also consider passing them along to us through your Zone Governors. Third, we will be placing greater emphasis on our “new and improved” website this coming year. Kevin Jonas (Jonas Marketing) has done a truly outstanding job updating our website and it’s now up to us to fully utilize it. Those of you attending his presentation at the district convention can surely attest to the visual improvement, increased functionality, and user friendliness of this new software/service. Please check it out and become familiar with it. I also encourage all clubs to include our website address (www.ChesapeakeRuritans.org) on all club newsletters, flyers, and correspondence to both members and the general public. This website is a valuable source of information regarding the activities of our district, as well as Ruritan in general.

Like the notes on a sheet of music, when you all work together you make beautiful music and wonderful dreams come true. Your president leads the Symphony, don’t leave them out there alone, step up, show up and support them as your club shines in your zone and makes your community a better place.

Our next cabinet meeting is Sunday February 19th 2:00 at the Doswell Club. Secretary Betty Lee has sent out an invitation, please let her know if you will be able to attend.

Likewise, I encourage you to not overlook the Chesapeake Crab Newsletter. Editor, Pete Arnett works diligently compiling this newsletter and is always seeking club articles, pictures, and announcements to include. Please take advantage of this opportunity to share with other Chesapeake Ruritans the accomplishments and activities of your club. Also, please make sure these newsletters are circulated among your club’s general membership. It’s important that all club members have an opportunity to review and read these newsletters.

Fourth, let’s try harder this year to get the word out about Ruritan. Unfortunately, Ruritan remains a big secret and mystery to most people and many communities. We need to strive harder to let the public know who we are and what we are doing. Let’s talk up Ruritan in our churches, neighborhood meetings/gatherings, and anywhere else that we come in contact with others. Let’s make sure that we also utilize the media (newspaper, radio, & TV) to advertise what our clubs are doing and to promote our organization. In the same vein, let’s always be mindful of the impression we are giving others about Ruritan. Let’s be sure to not only emphasize that Ruritans do lots of community service but, we also have lots of FUN doing it! Everybody wants to belong to a group or organization that’s having lots of FUN! If we do a better job marketing ourselves, I’m confident our membership will grow.

Again, I thank you for your trust and confidence in me to allow me the opportunity to again serve as your Lt. Governor. I look forward to working with each of you this coming year to build and promote Ruritan. If I can be assistance to you or your club this year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I’ll do everything I possibly can to be there and support you. I’m proud to be a Ruritan and extremely grateful for all that you do to make our communities stronger and better throughout the Chesapeake District. Thank you and May God Bless you and Ruritan!

One final item. I’m also President of the Association of Virginia Ruritans (AVR) this year. This organization allows fellow Ruritans from around our state (and some from our neighboring states) to meet, share ideas, and fellowship together. We hold an annual rally every spring. This year our Spring Rally will be held in Williamsburg, Va., on April 7-9. I encourage you to consider coming and experiencing the fun and fellowship of our AVR Rallies. A registration form is being attached for your convenience or you can go to the Association of Virginia Ruritans website (www.AVR-Ruritan.org). Thank you!!! Yours in Ruritan Service, Cleve Wright 2017 Chesapeake District Lt. Governor

THINK GOLF The Fund Raising Committee is busy making plans for our Third Annual District Golf Tournament.  We will announce a date for the tournament by the President's meeting on Feb 19.  Our first tournament netted the District $3,500, last year we netted $5,000 and this year we are hoping to net $7,500.   So start thinking golf and get your friends on board to enter a team.  We are hoping every club in the district will either send a team or get a sponsorship for the tournament.  Thanks for your efforts !!

Throughout the year members of the Abingdon Ruritan Club worked hard raising funds with seafood festivals, clam chowder sales and other activities.  At its December meeting, representatives of 40 charitable non-profit organizations were invited to the Club's meeting to enjoy a nice dinner and to receive a donation check. This year the total of the year-end donation checks was $35,750. In addition to the year-end donations, the Club participated in many community projects by providing money and volunteer labor throughout the year.  Some individuals with financial emergencies were also helped. During 2016 the Club donated approximately $62,000 and provided many hours of community service. Two Club members received special recognition from President Rose Taylor. Mary Lou Shepherd was announced as the Abingdon Ruritan Club's Ruritan of the year.  Charlie Dail received a plaque recognizing his untiring efforts selling tickets for the Club's signature events, the seafood festivals. The festive evening ended with Ruritan National President-Elect Danny Privott installing newly elected board members for 2017.  Those being installed were President Michael Davis, Vice President Tony Dziadul and Director Frank Collins.  Pictured from left are Collins, Privott, Davis, and Dziadul. The members of the Abingdon Ruritan Club received a very interesting and informative presentation from Brenda Mack, president of Friends of Woodville School.  She covered the history of the Historic Woodville School and the efforts being made for the restoration of the school.  In 2004 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The property is now owned and under the stewardship of the T.C. Walker and Woodville/Rosenwald Foundation. The vision of the Foundation is to restore the school building to what it was in 1923 and establish it as a living monument to the same principles held by T.C.Walker and the members of the African American Community who made the school possible.  The Foundation intends to return the school to the community as a resource for classes, meetings or other community service. Mack discussed the need for financial assistance and for volunteers to assist in the restoration.  Go to www.woodvillerosenwaldschool.org to get additional information or to  become involved.

The Abingdon Ruritan Club's Social Development Committee, co-chaired by Mike Ekdahl and Mitch Dunston, partnered with the Gloucester Salvation Army to collect and donate gently used coats to the Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg.  Bill Parks coordinated the Salvation Army's effort. A total of 115 coats were donated with 53 coming from the Ruritan Club and 62 from the Salvation Army.  Charlene Foster, Chaplin Bill Sirmans and Melissa Evans, staff members of the hospital, accepted the coats from Ekdahl.

Chickahominy Ruritan Club of Williamsburg held a Community Toy Drive in December. They collected 365 toys, 3 bikes, 2 trikes, and $140 dollars. All items were donated to their local Salvation Army to be distributed in their community. Chickahominy Ruritan Club of Williamsburg made their annual donations to their community. A total of $1,000 was donated back to their community. Picture receiving their checks are representatives from:  Beyond Boobs!, Norge Angel Tree, ARC, and FISH. Also receiving donations were:  Angles of Mercy and Hunters for the Hungry.

The York Ruritan Club is proud to have been able to donate a total of $4800 to various York County Organizations throughout the year. The annual Callao Ruritan Club Ladies Night and Installation of Officers was held at Henderson United Method Church on Thursday, December 1. Members and their guests enjoyed a delicious dinner of turkey, ham and all the trimmings served by the ladies of the Church. Curtis Albrite presented the “Ruritan of the Year” award to Ruth Turner who has been serving as secretary for the Club over the past six years. Ruth became involved with the Ruritans when her husband, the late Larry Turner, was a member and she has assisted with the tractor pulls by making flyers, doing registration and announcing ever since.

Wellington Nash was recognized for his over 42 years of service to the Club and especially for his dedication to making the softball leagues that play each summer at the Ruritan Recreation Park such a successful endeavor. Past District Governor, Jack Spina installed the following as officers for 2017: President: Phillip Deitz, Vice-President: David Parr, Treasurer: James Harper, Secretary: Ruth Turner and Directors: Alice Swann, Joyce Keller and Kevin Harrison.

Sharon Mann and her husband, David, once again entertained the members with some beautiful and entertaining renditions of the traditional Christmas carols. A number of the ladies were lucky door prize winners and received early Christmas gifts.
