JULY - AUGUST 2017 In January 1892, Catharine Bettner, a Riverside socialite, moved into a Queen Anne-style mansion she had built on Magnolia Avenue. Mrs. Bettner lived in the house until her death in 1928, passing it on to her son. The McDavid family purchased the house in 1938 and enjoyed it so much that they kept the house in its original form adding only a few modern conveniences. The Riverside Museum Associates (RMA) bought the house in 1969 to preserve a remnant of Riverside’s color- ful past and named it the Heritage House. Community volunteers worked to preserve the house, paying close attention to historic details. It was listed as the fifth Cultural Heritage Landmark in Riverside and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The RMA deeded it to the City of Riverside in 1974. The RMA part- nered with the Riverside Metropolitan Museum staff to make the house accessible to the public and opened in 1977. Today RMA docents share the rich Riverside history on school and public tours, garden teas and special events such as Victorian Christmas Open House, Chinese Moon Festival and the Ice Cream Social.
