Since April 1913, business leaders in Owensboro have been joining forces to bolster the economy and press for initiatives to increase opportunities for busi-nesses to thrive. The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce was formed by ifteen member of the Owensboro Businessmen’s Association. 100 years later, the group is still thriving as the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce, with nearly 900 members.

The concept of the Chamber remains the same after

all these years – provide a place for the leaders of the Greater Owensboro area to come together and share their ideas and services to make Owensboro a better place to live and work.

To celebrate the accomplishments, members, and leaders who have contributed, the Chamber will host a Centennial a Centennial Celebration presented by Owensboro Health on January 19th at the RiverPark Center. The Celebration will begin at 6 pm with a recep-

tion, followed by a program at 7 pm in Cannon Hall. The program will highlight all the accomplishments over the last 100 years, and will include the annual “Passing of the Gavel” from 2012 Board Chair Michael F. Beckwith to 2013 Chair Gavin C. Roberts. The Dance of the Decades will begin at 8:30 pm with the Second Street Big Band playing until 11:30 pm.

Tickets for the Centennial Celebration are $50 and can be reserved by calling the Chamber at 926-1860.

Judge-Executive Al Mattingly and Mayor Ron Payne will make their “State of the Commu-nity” addresses at the January 3rd Rooster Booster Breakfast. A large crowd is expected for this annual event. Daviess County Fiscal Court and the City of Owensboro are co-spon-sors of the breakfast, which starts at 7:30 am at Owensboro Christian Church.

Al Mattingly is the Daviess County Judge-Executive and was sworn into ofice on January 3, 2011.

In 1971, Judge Mat-tingly married Ms. Judy (Wolfe) and they have one son, Will.

Judge Mattingly, born to Alfred and Commie Marie Mattingly on May 23, 1947, is the eldest of 12 siblings. He gradu-ated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 1965 and in 1969 received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Brescia College. Mattingly served in the United States Army from 1969 until 1972.

In 2003 and 2007, Judge Mat-tingly was elected and served as an Owensboro City Commissioner. In 2007, he served the Owensboro City Commission as Mayor Pro Tem. He has always been active in his com-munity and church, Our Lady of Lourdes. He is a member of various civic and professional organizations. He is President of a family-owned plumbing, heating, and cooling busi-

ness, Acme Plumbing and Heating, Inc.

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne retired as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Brescia University in May of

2008. Previously, he served as an Owensboro City Commissioner from 2005 until 2007. He has also maintained the positions of City Manager, the City’s Chief Administra-tive Oficer, from 1997 until his retirement in 2003, and Director of Finance & Administration from 1993 until 1997. Previously, Ron served 14 years with the City of

Tulsa, Oklahoma, irst as Controller and Deputy City Audi-tor and eventually as Director of

Finance. He was Owensboro’s City Auditor from 1975 to 1979 and also worked for the accounting irm of Coopers & Lybrand.

Payne is a Certiied Public Accountant. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Brescia College and a Master’s of Science in accounting from the University of Tulsa. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam. Payne and his wife Denise have two sons, Brian and Adam.

It has been a busy decade for Owensboro. The City has closed a chapter on riverfront development with the rededication of the Shelton Memorial, grand opening of Smoth-ers Park and an historic airshow, but progress continues downtown with construction on the convention cen-ter and millions of dollars in private investment. Mayor Ron Payne will review the past year of develop-ments, both public and private and highlight where Owensboro is as daily business continues, including public safety, infrastructure, eco-nomic development, inances and quality of life. The Mayor will also provide a peek into 2013.

Gavin C. Roberts, Agency Manager of Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance, is the 2013 board chair for the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce. He assumes the role from Michael F. Beck-with, the 2012 board chair.

“I’m excited about the direction of the Chamber. 2013 will be a busy year – a year of celebration of 100 years of business leaders com-ing together to strengthen our community. We will be active all year as the voice of our members, making sure progress on I-67 is hap-pening and providing assistance to our members in navigating the changing healthcare environment, among many other efforts,” said Roberts. “We hope all our members and our entire com-munity will continue to engage in the conversation of how to keep Owens-

boro on the move – tackling today’s issues and planning for the future.”

Roberts, in his role as board chair, will work with a 20-mem-ber board, nominated and elect-ed by the membership. Those serving as directors for the Chamber in 2013 include:

Crystal Jones is celebrating the New Year healthier, thanks to the jump start she received in last year’s Get Movin’ challenge. She and her husband, John, formed a team with friends, which provided the support and accountabil-ity they needed to start exercising and change their eating habits.

“It worked really well for me,” she said, adding that her “competitive nature” served as a natural motivation in the team environment.

After only 12 weeks, Crystal Jones found herself 34 pounds lighter. And today she’s lost over 75 pounds and

on target to reach her weight loss goal of 100 pounds by May.

Her husband lost 32 pounds during the contest and has kept it off.

Crystal Jones has continued to incorporate regular physical activity on most days of the week, inding running to be her niche.

“If I don’t run for a day I feel like I’m missing something,” she said.

John Jones also runs and their two children have joined cross country teams.
