     January Best of the Month

    Congratulations to Copy Chief  Tom Maupin, selected Best Overall for January.Every day, Tom sits down to work on his space-age keyoard with one mission! "ayattention to detail.

    #e is looking for issues in ig te$t and small type alike. There isn%t enough time inthe day for him to list all the things he catches, ut here are a few of the items hecaught during the month of January. Before & list those, let me point out that theseshow a dedication to getting the story right on several levels. There%s a catch thatsaved us from having a headline with an editorial spin in it. There%s a catch thatkept us from looking as if we don%t know history. &n addition to these catches, there

    are proaly in'nitely many style catches.

    #e never (skims) stories, taking very seriously the responsiility of the accuracy ofall of our products. #e knows that most of the time, he is the last person to read astory efore pulication. #e reads with that intensity even when he knows someonewill read ehind him.

    #e%s known as a resource on oth Oklahoman and *" +tyle and tries to encourageothers to learn style and how to use the resources availale to them rather than ustletting others use his vast knowledge as a crutch.

    made and tries to encourage memers of the department to highlight their hardwork and successes in this area, which could otherwise e overlooked easily.

     This turned out to e one of my favorite >ife covers so far. 0sing only stock photos,:@et3i$ red: and mimicking the style of vintage o$ing posters this >ife cover turnedout to e a really fun and eye catching design. The monotone, grungy image eDects& used on the faces and the remotes lend themselves to the old fashioned looktypical of retro o$ing posters. 2eeping with the vintage style, & modeled thetypography and e$tra te$t from actual posters ut tweaked the wording so theyactually made since with the story. &:m not usually a copy person so this was a nicechallenge for me, ut & was really happy with the way it all turned out. *nd lastly the

    headline P=ight @ightP was inspired y the design, & rarely have impactful words thatcome to me for my designs, ut in this case & couldn:t imagine any other headlinewould have een more perfect.
