Classworks Theatre in association with Cambridge Devised TheatrepresentLADY CONNIE AND THE SUFFRAGETTESThursday 10th March - 7.30pm (doors & bar open 7pm)Written by Ros Connelly. Directed by Jenny CulankStarring: Emma Spearing This new play explores Lady Constance Lytton’s unique role in the Suffragette Movement, her privileged background and her development into one of the suffragettes’ heroic icons. The nuances and drama of a life torn between the private and the public, love and duty, family and cause are drawn from Constance Lytton’s own writings in her letters, diaries and her book Prisons and Prisoners.Constance Lytton struggles with the frustrations and constrictions of life as ‘an upper-class, financially dependent, useless, congenitally shy spinster’ and the fluctuations of an achingly sad love affair. Determined to expose the double standards and barbaric treatment committed against the suffragettes, she put herself at immense personal risk with devastating consequences.A short introductory talk will be given by the suffragette historian and biographer of Lady Constance Lytton, Lyndsey Jenkins and the play will be followed by the opportunity for a Q&A with the cast.

ROGER HUBBARD Thursday 21st January 7.30pmThe season starts with the acclaimed slide blues guitarist Roger Hubbard.Born in 1950 in Brighton. Roger remains one of the UK’s major exponents of the slide guitar. www.rogerhubbard.co.uk In 1971 Roger opened for Muddy Waters at The Gardner Centre, Brighton. He also appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival and on the first pyramid stage at Glastonbury the same year. In 1972 Muddy Waters was quoted in Sounds Magazine as saying, “Roger Hubbard is as good as any blues guitarist in the UK or the United States”. His first album Brighton Belle Blues was recorded in 1970 leading to several other collaborations and solo works. His forthcoming album If I had a dollar is eagerly awaited and anticipated in early 2016.

JIM CRAWFORDThursday 18th February 7.30pmJim Crawford is said to be something of an enigma. Originally from Lancashire, he now resides on the North Devon coast. A shy and retiring man who readily admits that recording studios fill him with dread and that he’d rather go fishing with his dog for company, has, none the less, toured much of Europe and the USA captivating audiences with his intimate folk/blues style.Softly spoken, Jim totally surprises his audience when he breaks into song with, as one reviewer put it “A richness of voice you can only be born with” and for years has been revered among professional musicians as a consummate finger picker and slide guitarist. He first came to the attention of a wider audience when invited to record a session for the BBC’s Paul Jones Show. Jim has finished his new solo album Roots & Originals which is available along with his previous albums Blues Boy and When the Rains Came. If you would like listen to a few tracks from these albums go along to www.myspace.com/jimcrawfordmusicwww.jimcrawford.org.uk

ADAM FRANKLINThursday 17th March 7.30pmAdam Franklin is a superb exponent of blues and ragtime from a Golden Age of American music. With a voice that is both powerful and soulful and equally at home on guitar and resonator ukulele, Adam’s performances are intense, energetic and highly entertaining. He makes his way through the pre-war American songbook, mixed with original songs that sound like they were written 80 years ago. Playing solo, his guitar is a band in a box and the floor is a drum kit.

DAVE BECKETT Thursday 21st April7.30pm)Dave Beckett is a seasoned and accomplished acoustic blues artist with accolades from Kontra Roots Promotions, BBC Radio Surrey and Time Out Magazine. Dave regularly performs around London and the Home Counties and has been involved in many musical collaborations with other blues artists. SUNDAY AFTERNOONS

‘FILMS OF THEIR DECADE’ 1940s – 1970s

THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)Sunday 10th JanuaryWinner of 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, this poignant film is considered the most deeply felt of all American movies to depict returning veterans. It quickly transports the audience back to the late 1940s to witness the traumatic adjustments (unemployment, adultery, alcoholism and ostracism) of three World War II servicemen to civilian life. The sense of class distinction is unusually well handled and the portrayal of disability so honest and wrenching, it has seldom been equalled.

THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (1952)Sunday 7th FebruaryAchieved 5 Academy Awards and is one of the finest looks at Hollywood behind-the-scenes during the 1950s.This brilliant and culturally significant film tells, via flashback, the steamy stories of three famous movie people whose lives were forever changed by their association with a ruthless producer. Many of its characters are reputedly based on real people.

BLOW-UP (1966)Sunday 6th MarchConsidered one of the seminal films of the 1960s and winner of the Golden Palm at Cannes. This taut and provocative film, set in Swinging London, combines a murder mystery with the fashion world and soundtrack of the era. It was a milestone in liberalized attitude toward film nudity and sexual expression and one of the greatest examples ever made about watching and making movies.

O LUCKY MAN! (1973)Sunday 17th AprilThis ambitious British film was one of the most original to satirise the era of England in the early 1970s. It is an often overlooked classic with a rich cast portraying bent coppers, mad scientists, ruthless tycoons, flagellant judges and sex-starved landladies. Helen Mirren predicted in 1975 that it was the kind of film people will come back to 20 years from now.
