Dear Gelbvieh & Balancer® Enthusiasts,

Welcome to Denver! The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) has been the opening livestock event of each New Year for more than a century. Cattle breeders from all over the world will converge in the Mile High city for more than two weeks in January. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle will be in the spotlight from January 5 through the 9.

The American Gelbvieh Association holds several national events during the first five days of the NWSS. These events include the Gelbvieh and Balancer futurities, the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Show along with the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale.

The AGA is pleased to be holding the national sale on the NWSS grounds again this year. Within the sale, breeders will find genetics they can put to work in their respective herds as well as animals they can be competitive with throughout the rest of the year. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association will participate in the sale by selling heifer raffle tickets and new this year, the American Gelbvieh Foundation will be a part of the sale by offering sale credits from AGA breeders from all across the country.

The National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale is the first don’t-miss event of 2017. On behalf of the AGA national office and the AGA Board of Directors, we invite you to join us at the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale and set the tone for a new year and the 2017 spring sale season.

I hope to see you all in Denver at the 2017 National Western Stock Show and National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale.

In 1970, Gallagher Rule and Mitch Dobson met Homer Knost in

Germany. Gallagher was looking for Holstein bulls, Homer was

looking for Limousin breeding stock and Mitch Dobson was

looking for breeding stock. This trio met Lennes Hall who was looking for

breeding bulls for Carnation Genetics. All four drifted toward the Gelbvieh

breeding collection center. There they found the great bull Hass, the top

Gelbvieh bull of the German semen collection center. Mitch, Gallagher and

Homer talked it over and decided when they got back to the United States

they should start a breed association connected to the Gelbvieh breed.

Gallagher was also a semen distributor for Carnation and was acquainted

with Lennes Hall and they thought he could get semen from Carnation as

Lennes had decided that Carnation needed to add Gelbvieh to their semen

inventory. So a loose connection was established while everyone was in

Germany and the wheels started to turn about forming a breed association

as soon as they got home. They had found out the Limousin association was

thinking of taking over the Gelbvieh breed and starting an offspring breed

of that association.

Very early in 1971, Mitch and Gallagher contacted two fraternity

brothers of Mitch Dobson, and ask them if they would be interested in

starting a breed association. The two frat brothers were Merle Buss and

Fred Tweitmeyer. The three of them had a fraternity brother who was an

attorney in Oklahoma City by the name of Edd Pritchett. A meeting was set

up in Edd’s office and the proposition of the association was discussed. At

that time, Homer Knost was also contacted to see if he would like to be a

part of this action. The next day the articles of incorporation were drawn up

and the by-laws were formed. The articles at that time were signed by Merle

Buss, Mitch Dobson and E. Edd Pritchett. The articles were notarized by Edd’s

wife, Susie Pritchett. Immediately after signing the three flew to Ponca City,

Oklahoma, and drove to Mitch Dobson’s ranch house and had Gallagher Rule

and Fred Tweitmeyer sign the articles of incorporation. They then flew back

to Oklahoma City and Edd took the incorporation papers to the Oklahoma

AGA Board of Directors from the 1970s.

Kathy Baughman was 18-years-old when she

became the first secretary of the AGA.Mitch Dobson’s house and the table where the final signing of the articles of incorporation took place.

State Capitol and had the papers registered with

the state of Oklahoma, thus forming the American

Gelbvieh Association (AGA) as an official breed

organization. That date was June 28, 1971. The

real need for the quickness of this action was that

the Limousin association was also working to get

the Gelbvieh breed registered in their name. The

only reason Homer Knost was not a signer on the

articles because there was not time for him to fly

from Louisiana to be there. This was how short the

time span was to get the AGA formed and keep the

Limousin association cut out. Timing was of the

essence and these men prevailed.

The first meeting

of the AGA was held

at the Tulsa State Fair

in Tulsa, Oklahoma,

that fall. The articles

of incorporation were

presented and ratified,

by-laws were discussed

and partially assembled.

It was decided by the

group that officers

were to be elected

for the association

and determine a

location for the office

to be established.

Gallagher Rule was

elected President,

Mitch Dobson was

elected Vice President,

Fred Tweitmeyer was

elected Secretary, and

Merle Buss was elected

Treasurer, Edd Pritchett

was appointed the legal

counsel for the AGA, a

position he held until

his retirement in 2014.

During that time, from

1971 to 2014, there was

never a lawsuit brought

on the AGA, a record of

achievement no other

breed association

can claim.

At the meeting of the AGA it

was decided to raise money charter

memberships would be sold for

$500. The charter memberships

were to be limited to 25. The

office of the AGA was established

in Gallagher Rule’s dairy barn in

Newkirk, Oklahoma. Gallagher’s

secretary, Kathy Baughman, was

hired as the first secretary of the

AGA. She worked half a day for the

dairy and the rest of the day for

the AGA.

Kathy has a couple interesting stories of her time as the secretary of the

newly-formed AGA. Since she was the only person working for the AGA, when

breeders would call in she would answer the phone and take their request

for service. She would politely tell them she would transfer them to the

department they asked for. She would then put the phone on hold and answer

it as the department requested. These were instructions from Gallagher to

make the association office seem larger than it actually was.

Kathy also said she never knew what to expect when she came to

work. Who, what, or how many she would be sharing the office with. Baby

calves born during the night at the dairy were common visitors at the AGA

office. So being a nurse maid and a secretary were common place for the

first secretary, and being a farm girl she was delighted with the position.

Being bored was never a problem. She said she received one perk while she

worked for the AGA. She set up the first national convention in Fort Worth,

Texas, and reserved 200 rooms for the convention. After she got everyone

registered and checked in, much to her surprise, there was not a room in

the hotel for her. After doing some negotiating with the manager, she was

given the presidential suite for the convention period at no charge to her or

the AGA. When the AGA decided to move the office to Denver, she was ask to

go, but upon going to Denver and looking around, this Oklahoma farm girl

decided to stay in Oklahoma.

SELLING BREEDER’S CHOICE 2017 FUTURITY CHAMPION BULL

The winner of the Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity is a sale attraction every year in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale. The Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity brings out many of the top young purebred Gelbvieh bulls that would not be sold outside these programs unless they win the Futurity. The winning bull is only available for breeding by the futurity members and purchasers of the bull in the National Sale for the next two years.

Past winners of the Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity have gone on to win three National Championships and two National Reserve Championships the following day, and have developed into unique breeding pieces.

Buyer owns possession and 50% semen interest in the Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity Champion when the bull is sold. Insurance is furnished on the bull by the Futurity until all semen collection is complete. Buyer takes possession of the bull when semen collection for bull futurity members is complete.

Contact futurity managers Chris Mitchell or Randy Sienknecht for purchasing possessions or semen packages to be sold on the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Champion in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale.

PCCI Mr In Focus 5091C ET is a full brother to our $16,000 top-selling bull in the 2013 Pearson Cattle Co. Bull Sale. His pedigree on the maternal side descends from some of the best low birth, highly maternal sire lines in the Angus breed. His sire, Connealy In Focus 4, is a maternal half brother to the original Connealy Consensus bull, both descending from Blinda of Conanga 004, who was

the $65,000 pick of the herd female from the Connealy sale. On the maternal side of 5091C, you’ll find TAU Ty and Power Pac, influential sires of our many-time champion pen bulls. This bull combines it all, power, substance, structure, depth of rib and numbers into a terrific looking package.

Selling one-half embryo interest with no possession.

When people visit the farm to look at cattle this young cow, Clinch Mt Ms Impact 1339A, is the one who keeps coming to the top and then they start talking about her near-perfect conformation and phenotype with that beautiful udder. We were fortunate to obtain weaned heifers from John Loy of Clinch Mt. Gelbvieh a short time ago, and this one has become special. Her first calf, BCFG 133C, was Champion Balancer Female at Junior Nationals in Stillwater, Oklahoma, this past summer and was recently named Champion Balancer at the

North American in Louisville for the Raab family in Indiana. Clinch Mt Ms Impact 1339A is nursing a full-sib bull calf to the champion heifer and he looks like he could be pretty special also.

As one can see, this cow has a beautiful udder and outstanding phenotype. Her sire, BCFG Butlers Impact 549U, sold for $14,000.00 in Clinch Mt.’s dispersal as an aged bull and his progeny were in great demand as they topped their sale. This young cow is a moderate, easy-fleshing female with loads of potential. Keep her Purebred or breed her Balancer. Do not overlook this opportunity.

TAU Girl Crush 5032C is the homozygous polled, homozygous black Balancer female from the very top of the Taubenheim extraordinary program. This complete and total program excels in all aspects of seedstock production, and years of selection pressure has resulted into one of the most consistent and efficient herds of pedigreed beef cattle in North America. The best Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics have been incorporated into the breeding plan, and the results are obviously noted when appraising the herd firsthand.

One of the greatest of all Angus breeding sires is the sire of this Balancer female, Conneally Consenesus 7229. The genetic influence of this proven multiple trait-leading bull is well-documented within the purebred, hybrid and commercial industries of the beef genetics industry.

Her dam, TAU Miss Gunnison 106R 8101U, is one of the most powerful and prolific donor females in the Gelbvieh industry. Her influence is the major driving force behind the genetics in the Taubenheim herd.

TAU Girl Crush 5032C is balanced for both phenotype and genotype, and she offers much breeding consistency to the industry.

Maria is a combination of two of our top cow families—AHL Hott Damn 31L and BABR Secret Crush, and is a maternal sister to BABR Branded Man 3400A who is proving to sire low birth high performing cattle. We calved our first set of Secret Brand daughters this past spring and they were all easy-fleshing, soft-made with near-perfect teat and udder placement. If you look at the calving, birth weight, performance and marbling on both the top and bottom side of this pedigree you will find a consistent low birth weight, big performance numbers and a marbling score that ranges from 3.0 to 3.5 on average from all progeny. BEA 5101D comes from the heart of our ET program and is what we have been selecting for over the years. She is loaded with length, natural volume and rib shape in an attractive, feminine package. We selected her donor dam, DLW 321A, for her overall balance, fleshing ability and eye appeal. We have only had her for a short period of time, but there isn’t a calf (ET or natural) we haven’t been impressed with. We have mated her several different ways, but this flush is our favorite thus far. BABR 4267B was a crowd favorite in our 2015 bull sale. He offers length, thickness, extension and offers a stout skeletal make up with a sound functional foot to carry it. His dam, River Hills Forever Lady U276, is a consistent producer. Her progeny offer and average birth weight of 78lbs, adjusted weaning weight of 752 lbs. an adjusted yearling weight of 1,491 lbs. with a marbling score of 4.1. This female offers top-end production and proven carcass genetics, and we look forward what the future has in store for her. Retaining the right to one flush at the purchaser’s convenience.

JLSL Olivia 646D is a genetic blend of some of the best possible genetic combinations available to the industry. This Balancer female is genetically derived from the most proven of lines from both the Red Angus and Gelbvieh lineage, and her phenotype is uncommonly appealing and dynamic. The highly maternal pedigree is sourced through the family lineage of the pedigree derivation which is constructed from the foundation genetics of 5L Norseman King. In turn, Marshawn is backed by two of the most trusted cow families that have been incorporated in the

Ledgerwood Gelbvieh program, the Sensation 453K and Diamond 509R cow families.

This soft-made and easy-fleshing female exemplifies the popularity of the Balancer aspect of the Gelbvieh breed. She is genetically diverse in her construction, and she is marriageable to most any of the popular lines of herd sires to created the next step in genetic expansion through her progeny.

Ledgerwood Gelbvieh is offering one of their very best through the blood of this young Balancer female.

Rosie 312A was calf champion in Denver and was Reserve Champion that year in the National Junior Show plus was Reserve Champion at the NAILE in Louisville, KY. Lola was also the Reserve Champion that year in the Junior Balancer Show at NWSS, she was a class winner earlier that summer at the Junior National Show. Starburst also produced the Champion or Reserved Champion at the Black Hills Stock Show three years in a row. She has been mated to Angus, Balancer, and Gelbvieh bulls and no matter what you mate her to it just flat works. Her first calf, BCFG 133C, was Champion Balancer Female at Junior Nationals in Stillwater, Oklahoma, this past summer and was recently named Champion Balancer at the North American in Louisville for the Raab family in Indiana.

This

young cow is a moderate, easy-fleshing female with loads of potential. Keep her Purebred or breed her Balancer. Do not overlook this opportunity.

We are excited to be offering a pick of all our fall-born 2016 heifer or bull calves. This pick will consist of approximately 30 natural born and embryo calves. Last year’s pick BCFG-SKYS Kali 282C was just named Champion Gelbvieh Female at the North American in Louisville. This was very exciting for the Skylar Martin family of IL. They are thrilled with their pick and future potential of this female.

This is our third opportunity to offer a “Pick of Herd” and the fall calves are looking good. Call us about our two sale offerings to the National Gelbvieh Sale of which we are thankful and blessed to be a part of.
