LAS VEGAS Tom Smallwood
of Saginaw, Mich., ended a four-
year television drought when he
defeated collegiate star Marshall
Kent of Yakima, Wash., 221-216,
to win his second Professional
Bowlers Association Tour title in
the Scorpion Championship at the
South Point Hotel and Casino
complex.
The Scorpion Championship,
which aired on ESPN, was thefinal animal pattern champi-
onship conducted as part PBA
World Series of Bowling V, and
the fourth in a series of seven
events conducted during the
World Series. It also featured the
innovative blue oil that has been used during all ani-
mal pattern tournament finals to give television fans
a unique opportunity to see the lane conditioning
challenges PBA players face.
Smallwood, who won his only previous PBA Tour
title in the 2009 PBA World Championship, ended a
personal six-appearance television drought when he
out-lasted 2011-12 PBA Rookie of the Year Josh
Blanchard of Gilbert, Ariz., in a
PBA-record five-frame sudden-
death roll-off, followed by anoth-
er thrilling victory over Kent for
the title.
Blanchard started the stepladder
finals with a 234-226 victory over
Tommy Jones of Simpsonville,
S.C., but lost to Smallwood in the
semifinal match roll-off. A six-
count on his final shot in the 10th
frame tied the match at 232-232.After throwing matching strikes
in four one-ball, sudden-death
frames, Smallwood ended the
longest televised sudden-death
roll-off in PBA history with a
fifth strike while Blanchard left a
10 pin.
In the title match against Kent, a two-time
Collegiate Player of the Year who was competing
in the World Series on a special PBA
Commissioners exemption, Smallwood struck on
six of his first seven shots, but failed to convert a
3-10 split in the fourth f rame.

Good griefwhere did that year
go? Ill have to check the dryer tosee if 2013 is there along with that
one missing sock.
So its time to move forward
with renewed optimism for our
bowlers.
As the PBA Barbasol
Tournament of Champions in
Detroit is approaching starting
January 18th with final televised
rounds on ESPN at noon on
Sunday, January 26, do you know
if any of our local bowlers are
entered?

carry preliminary rounds of most
of the PBA tournaments. Check

a complete schedule of interna-
tional, national and regional tour-
naments. They offer alternatives to
annual subscriptions.
The USBC Masters will be held
in New Jersey at Brunswick Zone
Carolier Lanes, North Brunswick,
from Monday, February 17
through Sunday, February 23rd.
This year there will be a bonus
competition when the PBA
League Playoffs will also be held
on that Sunday. Spectator tickets
and pro-am information will be
available closer to the tournament
dates.
Reminders:
Typhoon Haiyan struck thePhilippines on November 8,
killing 6,000 people and leveling
entire cities. The estimated dam-
age and repair figure was 8.2 bil-
lion dollars. People who have
seen New Orleans and the East
Coast towns that were devastated
by hurricanes know that repara-
tions are not made overnight, or
even over a year.
To that end, the Testa family,
who bowls at Rockaway Lanes, is
hosting a Bowling Night for
Typhoon Relief mainly to help
the towns of Cadiz and Capiz,
where Deanna Testa has family
members. This will be atRockaway Lanes for adults only,
on Saturday, January 18 from 8 to
10 p.m. The cost and donation of
$25 per person will include two
hours of unlimited bowling, shoe
rental, and a large pizza and
pitcher of soda per lane. There is
a maximum of 5 people per lane.
Reservations and payments
must be made by Monday,
January 15th. Checks are to be
payable to Rockaway Lanes, with
Typhoon Relief Bowling Night
in the memo area. For further
information and to reserve your
spot (or bring a whole team), con-
tact the lanes at 973-627-5800.
Youth bowler Jack Cook, 16, is
at it again. He recently came insecond at a JBT (Junior Bowlers
Tour) stop at Howell Lanes,
Howell, NJ. He averaged 240
there. That same weekend he
bowled in the states youth tour-
nament and shot 299-193-300 for
a 792 series, making his total of
perfect sanctioned games three
now. The following day he rolled
another 300 during a high school
league practice session. His high
school league average is current-
ly 237.
What magic was infused into
young Cook to cause this? Its
my new bowling balls, he said.
At the states my team won theteam event and Dan Mangano and
I won the doubles (where he shot
the 792). Pro Image Pro Shops
Ken Yokobosky drilled both
balls. Additiona lly, Ken has been
working with Cook, which is not
bad considering he is a gold level
certified coach.
Jack Cook resides in Denville
with parents John and Nancy and
sister Stephanie. As if his bowl-
ing talent were not enough, he
also plays cello in the Lakeland
Youth Symphony. He has been
bowling for only 8 years, and
play ing the cell o for 7. This
Morris Knolls sophomore would
like to bowl a sanctioned 800series next, attend the team trials
and make it onto junior Team
USA. It certainly looks promis-
ing.
Billy DeHaas, 29, shot a 300 on
his favorite pair of lanes, 27
and 28 at Circle Lanes in the
Hensle Trio Classic.. Billy
resides in Andover and dedicated
his latest accomplishment to my
girlfriend Amanda Martin
because she's an amazing person
who will always support me in
the sport that I am very passion-
ate about.

Idle bowling thoughts
Wishing your opponent is
mostly symbolic. But you really
can be sincere, and wish your
foe twice the luck you have.
Then you make a wish that you
get five splits in each game.
Almost every year for more
than a decade Walter Ray
Williams, Jr. has been consid-
ered one of the top spare shoot-
ers by his fellow pros and thestats back it up. But wait a
moment and the fact strikes
home that he also is one of the
most consistent bowlers in the
clutch at hitting the pocket, and
carrying strikes. Lets see now,
he rates with the best as a spare
shooter, a pocket hitter and
strike getter. So it shouldnt be
the least bit surprising that he
gains more and more backing
when they discuss the greatest of
all time.
Practically every radio sta-
tion in the country gives regular
weather reports. Where there isskiing they give snow conditions
and where there is surfing they
give wave size reports, and
many give race car track condi-
tions and horse race track con-
ditions. Know what, I never
heard any radio station any-
where reporting the lane condi-
tions of nearby bowling center.
...Never thought I'd see the day
when bowling balls came in
more colors than Easter eggs.
And why hasn't someone
revived wooden bowling balls
and high top bowling shoes?

Kent, with a four-strike string of his own, held an early 13-pin lea
but a 7-10 split in the ninth frame proved to be the difference. A spa
and nine-count on his fill ball in the 10th frame clinched the title fo
Smallwood.
I thought if I ever made another show and won, Id bawl like a baby
Smallwood said, but I was so emotionally drained, I didnt have an
emotions left.
Its amazing, he added. I never dreamed in my life Id have on
(title), so to have two? As a kid, all I ever wanted was a chance to b
there. I watched these guys on TV forever. Ive bowled bad enough o
TV enough times its nice to be on the other side of a bad break. Tha
last time I was (on TV), I got knocked out of the World Championshi
when I left back to back 4-9s, so I know the feeling.
Smallwood said the difference was finding his shot to the pocket in th
roll-off against Blanchard.
In the roll-off (against Blanchard), my timing got really good. Th
first shot was perfect, it was like, there it is, Smallwood said. Afte
that, I never missed until the fifth shot and I apparently missed in th
right place on that one, so it worked out well.
Smallwood joined the list of animal pattern finalists who said the blu
oil had no bearing on his game or the outcome.
(The blue oil) doesnt matter as long as you can see the target you
looking for, he said. Its so clear I could see the board I was lookin
at, so it had no effect on me at all.
The Scorpion Championship telecast also included the fourth and fin
PBA League Challenge segment, called the T.O. Challenge. The skil
competition among PBA League franchise players called for each of th
eight bowlers to try to match the exact pinfall of a shot thrown by PB
League owner and long-time NFL all-pro wide receiver Terrell Owen
Owens threw a strike for five of the eight players, but the only player t
match his effort was Australias Jason Belmonte, who won the T.O
Challenge and the overall competition. As the PBA League Challeng
winner, all of the proceeds from an upcoming fund-raising auction wi
be donated to Belmontes designated charity, NBA star and PBA Leagu
owner Chris Pauls CP3 Foundation.
I had the easiest (shot) because all of us who got to shoot at strike
that was the easiest one to try to duplicate, said PBA Hall of Famer an
Dallas Strikers franchise player Norm Duke. Owens struck on his fir
attempt, but Duke failed to match his effort, leaving two pins standing
Owens got a seven-count for Silver Lake Atom Splitters owner Chr
Barnes, and Barnes successfully matched the pin count.
The T.O. Challenge could have been anything, Barnes said. He g
lined up, which gave a few guys a chance to do what they do best, whic
is throw strikes, but only one of them did it. I was lucky to get seven pin
and that gave me a chance.
We were all hoping (Owens) would get a strike, so I was fortunat
that he pulled my name out and he struck, said Belmonte, L.A. X
franchise player. It was just a matter of throwing a good shot and ho
ing all 10 pins fell, and thats exactly what happened. Im glad he pulle
my name out, glad he struck and glad I won everything.
