The Epiphany
The Pastor emeritus of the universal Church, Pope Benedict XVI wrote to his flock in 2006 about the mystery of the Epiphany. He thought about how ironic it was that the powers that be in Jerusalem, represented by King Herod, the chief priests and the scribes could not see the light of Christ, but the poor and the pagans, represented by Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the magi saw it clearly. Here is Pope Benedict:
Dear Brothers and Sisters, The light that shone in the night at Christmas illuminating the Bethlehem Grotto, where Mary, Joseph and the shepherds remained in silent adoration, shines out today and is manifested to all. The Epiphany is a mystery of light, symbolically suggested by the star that guided the Magi on their journey. The true source of light, however, the "sun that rises from on high" (cf. LC 1,78), is Christ. In the mystery of Christmas, Christ's light shines on the earth, spreading, as it were, in concentric circles. First of all, it shines on the Holy Family of Nazareth: the Virgin Mary and Joseph are illuminated by the divine presence of the Infant Jesus. The light of the Redeemer is then manifested to the shepherds of Bethlehem, who, informed by an Angel, hasten immediately to the grotto and find there the "sign" that had been foretold to them: the Child, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger (cf. LC 2,12). The shepherds, together with Mary and Joseph, represent that "remnant of Israel", the poor, the anawim, to whom the Good News was proclaimed. Finally, Christ's brightness shines out, reaching the Magi who are the first-fruits of the pagan peoples. The palaces of the rulers of Jerusalem, to which, paradoxically, the Magi actually take the news of the Messiah's birth, are left in the shade. Moreover, this news does not give rise to joy but to fear and hostile reactions. The divine plan was mysterious: "The light came into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were wicked" (JN 3,19).
As the Pope said, the same light “shines out today and is manifested to all.” Unfortunately, not all will see the light of Christ. Blinded by pride and fear, King Herod, the priests and the scribes could not see the light. For “God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.” (1 Pet 5:5) But, unlike them, if we all approach God in prayers at Mass and in the sacraments with humility, we too shall see the glory of the Father, ‘the light of the world’, Christ our Savior.

pudieron ver la luz de Cristo, pero los pobres y los paganos, representados por María, José, los pastores y los magos lo vieron claramente. Esto dijo el Papa Benedicto:

Quedan en la sombra los palacios del poder de Jerusalén, a donde, de forma paradójica, precisamente los Magos llevan la noticia del nacimiento del Mesías, y no suscita alegría, sino temor y reacciones hostiles. Misterioso designio divino: "La luz vino al mundo, y los hombres prefirieron las tinieblas a la luz, porque sus obras eras malas" (Jn 3, 19). Como dijo el Papa, la misma luz "brilla hoy y se manifiesta
a todos." Desafortunadamente, no todos verán la luz de Cristo. Cegados por el orgullo y el miedo, el rey Herodes, los sacerdotes y los escribas no pudieron ver la luz. Porque "Dios resiste a los soberbios, pero da su gracia a los humildes" (1 Pedro 5:5). Pero, si a diferencia de ellos, nosotros nos acercamos a Dios en oraciones, en la Misa y en los sacramentos con humildad, también nosotros veremos la gloria del Padre, 'la luz del mundo', Cristo nuestro Salvador.

YOUTH MINISTRY
When I first came to this parish I was 10 years old and had not yet been baptized. I was attending school here at Sacred Heart and had my first introduction to the faith through the school and had decided to become a catholic because of it. When I was preparing for baptism, I remember someone mentioned to me that if Monsignor Biedermann was doing my baptism he probably would have just confirmed me as well because I was receiving baptism and communion together at age 10. I never really understood that until I got older and started facilitating confirmation and having people come to the program telling me that their teen was confirmed at baptism but they didn’t have any paperwork that proved it. I had to look into why this is something that would have been done and came to find out that before infant baptisms became a common thing, adults would come into the church for the first in a process similar to our RCIA program. Confirmation is the perfection of baptismal grace and we receive the Holy Sprit in a unique way that deepens our graces we received at baptism and calls us to participate in the apostolic mission of the Church. This weekend we are talking with our Year 2 teens about the Sacrament of Confirmation and taking a deep dive into the Sacrament. Upcoming Events:

La primera vez que llegué a esta parroquia tenía 10 años y aún no me había bautizado. Asistía a la escuela aquí en el Sagrado Corazón y tuve mi primera introducción a la fe a través de la escuela y por ello decidí ser católico. Cuando me preparaba para el bautismo, recuerdo que alguien me dijo que si Monseñor Biedermann me bautizaba, probablemente también me habría confirmado, porque a los 10 años recibía el bautismo y la comunión juntos. Nunca lo entendí realmente hasta que crecí y empecé a coordinar la confirmación. Los padres me decían que su hijo/a era confirmado/a en el bautismo pero no tenían ningún documento que lo demostrara. Tuve que investigar por qué esto es algo que se habría hecho y llegué a descubrir que antes de que los bautismos de niños se convirtieran en algo común, los adultos venían a la iglesia por primera vez en un proceso similar a nuestro programa RCIA. La confirmación es la perfección de la gracia bautismal y recibimos el Espíritu Santo de una manera única que profundiza las gracias que recibimos en el bautismo y nos llama a participar en la misión apostólica de la Iglesia. Este fin de semana estamos hablando con nuestros jóvenes de 2º año sobre el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tomando una inmersión profunda en el Sacramento. Próximos eventos: \

The Epiphany of the Lord A Gift for the Wise Men
A rather liberal priest was teasing one of the women of the parish, asking, “How do we know the Wise Men weren’t Wise Women?” She answered, “If they were, they’d have brought bottles, diapers, and a bassinet, instead of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
The gifts, of course, are symbols of who Jesus is: a king who is both God and human. And I wonder what our gifts to the Lord say about our faith in him. Remember the song about the little drummer boy, who had no gift to bring but his ability to play the drum? It can remind us that a person who gives all they have, no matter how little it seems, is the most generous. So what do we bring to the newborn King? I can give my time by coming to church for the feast of Epiphany and actually paying attention. Just making the effort to listen to the words of scripture, to hear what God may be trying to tell me, could be a great gift. Or I could bring someone in our family, or a friend, who doesn’t go to church very much. Now let’s not forget the meaning of “epiphany.” In ancient times it meant the appearance or manifestation of a divine being. Maybe a way to celebrate the Epiphany is to reflect on how God has been made known to me. Simple things, like a hug from a friend or an answered prayer, or major events like a wedding, the birth of a child, or a funeral, can all be ways to experience the Lord. The Wise Men received the gift of an epiphany by following a star. May the light of Christ lead you to him also.

Un Regalo para los Sabios Un sacerdote bastante liberal estaba molestando a una de las mujeres de la parroquia, preguntando: "¿Cómo sabemos que los Reyes Magos no eran Mujeres Sabias?" Ella respondió: "Si lo fueran, habrían traído biberones, pañales y una cuna, en lugar de oro, incienso y mirra ".
