Year 9 Options Process

Did you know what you wanted to do at 13 or 14? Some of us were lucky and always knew we wanted to be a

doctor, lawyer, zoo keeper or teacher, but the rest of us didn’t find our calling until later on in life. Well our

before feeling happy that the right choice has been made. We are here to help both you and your children to

make this process as stress free as possible, with assemblies, subject talks, Taster Days and Parents’ Evenings

Attendance Measure Three tutor groups achieved 100% attendance this week; 7MPC, 12/13KS and 12/13RN.

Springs Lane Entrance Reminder Students have been informed this week about the planned changes to the Springs Lane Entrance. From Tuesday 4th March the Springs Lane entrance will be vehicle only. A CCTV camera already monitors it and students have been warned that they must not be found using it. Instead they should walk up Wheatley Lane or further along to the Springs Lane pedestrian entrance. Please support us with this and ensure your child stays safe on the way into and out of school.

Recruiting our New Headteacher Dear Parent/Carer, Following Gillian James’ decision to retire in the summer, the governors are in the process of finding her successor. She is going to be a very hard act to follow; in her 12 years here Gillian has led and inspired students and staff to ever-improving achievement. IGS is a calm and orderly school with an ethos of trust and care and students who have a highly positive attitude to learning. We need to build on this secure and strong base as we continue our journey to excellence.

The post is advertised on the TES website this week and full details will be on the school website. Interviews are scheduled for February 19th and 20th, so that, if all goes well and we find the right person, we will be able to make the appointment by half term. Gillian, of course, will not be leaving until August 31st.

Yours Sincerely Lindsey Wharmby - Chair of Board of Governors

Parentpay We are currently making some changes to the website – hopefully over the next few weeks you should find it easier when looking for information. One of the changes has been the addition of a shortcut to Parentpay on the front page of the website.

Remember you can manage alerts on Parentpay to remind you when deadlines are approaching, new payment items have been added or whether your balance is low. To do this log into Parentpay and choose the ‘Communications’ tab, then click ‘Change alert settings’. Next, make sure you have registered and verified a main mobile number and email address. Now follow these simple steps to set up alerts:

1. Log into your ParentPay account 2. Click the ‘Communications’ tab 3. Then click ‘Change alert settings’ - from here you can choose to receive email or SMS alerts 4. You will need to enter the threshold for balance alerts. For example, if you enter £2.00 as the threshold

for Low Balance Reminders you receive an email/SMS alert when your child’s balance drops below £2.00. Setting up these alerts will ensure you are aware when new payment items are on your account.

Sharing Success Well done to Charlotte Whittaker Pitts (9JI), Holly Ramsey (9JI), McKenzie Shearn Miller (9JLF), Steph Flint (9BJS), Eleanor Fotherby (9JI) who sold 'teen themed' cakes for cancer research on Tuesday. They raised £82.38. Congratulations to our G band swimmers who took part in their heat of the swimming gala. The results were as follows; 1st 7HED/KE, 2nd 7SL, 3rd 7LG. The gala resulted in a dead heat and we had a tie break ‘swim off’ with 7HED/KE taking the winning place with just one point. 7HED/KE joins 7SP in the final. Who will be victorious in S band? Congratulations to Mark Crooks (11MH) who is the first Year 11student to achieve his Bronze Certificate (40 credits).

Well done and good luck to Sam McKinnon-Evans (8ADM) who following trials has been selected for the West Yorkshire Sports Hall Athletics team to represent West Yorkshire in the regional finals at Hull on 9th February.

Well done to Sophie Kirkup (7LAM), India Sahota (7LAM), Pedram Habibzadeh (7PDH) and Sophie Tarring (7SP).

They are the first students in the whole school to achieve their Silver Certificates (80 credits). It’s an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to our Year 7, 8 and 9 rugby teams who were in action against Whitcliffe Mount. The results were:

Year 7 IGS won 34-5 Year 8 IGS won 62-7 Year 9 IGS won 41-12

Go Team IGS!

The latest issue of School Sport Magazine has listed the 30 best state sport schools for 2013 – and IGS is ranked 19! This league was based on all state schools in the UK and used their performance in different sports and national competitions to rank them.

All the hours of training after school, all the evenings spent in the wind, rain and sometimes even snow; all the times students have ‘juggled’ with homework deadlines and afterschool fixtures – it was worth it! This ranking is a result of the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication of both the students and the PE staff over the years and we are extremely proud of everyone’s efforts. Whether in the ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ teams, each individual has made a significant contribution to the overall success of our school teams, continually pushing standards higher. Well done and thanks to all involved, which includes you, who continue to support your sons’ and daughters’ busy schedules!

Ilkley Grammar School PTA The Auction of Promises is already underway, so if you haven’t yet pledged a service, some fine wines, foods or a holiday cottage, then please get promising! We need your help to make this a success – even before the bidding starts in a few weeks’ time. Another date for your diary: our annual Quiz and Curry Night on Thursday 27th March in B Hall. Watch this space! We welcome all new members to our PTA – so join up and join in! The remainder of the meetings are due to be held on: Wednesday 12th March, Tuesday 29th April and Wednesday 11th June. Meetings start at 7pm and are held in the Lower Library in school. If you can’t make our meetings but would like to be included then email [email protected]. Watch out, too, for our 2014 Car Boot Sales: provisional dates are Sundays 6th April; 18th May; 22nd June and 20th July. You can follow the PTA on twitter @IGSPTA .

It has been a busy start to 2014 for Year 7 students. Following the success of the Ilkley Churches Together Food bank project and the Inter Tutor Group Dodgeball competition in the Autumn Term, students have already thrown themselves into a second term of enrichment opportunities and extra-curricular activities. They are currently enjoying the knock out stages of a highly competitive swimming competition. Noise levels in the school pool have reached a new height as girls and boys from all three bands cheer their class mates on. The final in a few weeks’ time will be a keenly contested and close affair.

After half term there will be the launch of another charitable challenge. This time the Readathon will not only raise money for two very worthy children’s charities but also encourage students to read a variety of books or magazines of their choosing. This new initiative will be launched in a forthcoming assembly and we hope that it will be popular with as many students as possible. In addition to these events, Post 16 iLeaders have been working hard in their Recreation and Leisure lessons to devise ways of assisting students in Year 7. They have come up with several innovative plans and ideas including the establishment of 1:1 online maths mentoring for some students at lunchtimes and the creation of a Year 7 Youth Club on Fridays. Some Year 12 students will also be delivering an assembly on revision skills in the run up to some important assessments in Year 7 later this term. Watch this space for further updates!

GCSE Overview It is important for students, staff and parents to have the overview of what GCSE commitments Year 11 have over the next few weeks. We have provided them all with this information in the form of a bookmark for their planners. Please see the calendar below.

Career of the week: Hospitality/Catering Manager

The Work: you could work in hotels, small independent restaurants, eateries that are part of a large chain, fast food outlets, and larger catering organisations such as business or factory canteens, hospitals or schools. Your duties would include:

Planning menus.

Advertising vacancies and recruiting staff.

Making sure that all staff are fully trained.

Keeping staff motivated to provide the highest standard of service.

Organising shifts and rotas.

Managing stock control and budgets.

Running the business in line with strict hygiene, health and safety guidelines.

Entry Requirements: many large restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies run management training schemes that can lead to management roles. You would usually need a foundation degree, a degree or relevant experience in order to be accepted on a scheme. Prior to this there are full and part time college courses and apprenticeships available in hospitality and catering. To work as a catering manager you will need to have the ability to manage staff, strong customer service skills and to be able to work with figures.

Training and Development: if you enter this work without a degree you could work towards a qualification such as the Level 4 diploma in advanced hospitality and tourism management. There are 1 year BA (Hons) conversion degree courses in Service Sector Management for those people with a degree not related to hospitality. There are also postgraduate diplomas or masters in hospitality management for graduates with relevant degrees.

Pay: starting salaries for assistant restaurant or catering managers can be between £18-23,000 a year. With experience this could rise to between £25-40,000 a year.
