A Message from Deacon Marty Kulak
My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I was asked to write something for our bulletin and while thinking of a topic, someone mentioned they were asked about
the sanctuary candle, so my decision was made easy, we’d do something from Catholic 101.
If you entered a vacant Catholic church at night, you would not be in total darkness. A single burning light would guide
your way; a sanctuary candle would be continuously burning above or near the tabernacle. It is a symbol that Christ is
present. It is kept alight to indicate and honor the presence of Christ. The only time it is extinguished is on Good Friday,
when the body of Christ is removed from the main church.
One of the most comforting symbols in Catholicism is the tabernacle, or sanctuary, candle. It is a sign that Christ is truly
among us.
In the Old Testament, God told Moses that a lamp filled with pure oil should perpetually burn in the Tabernacle. (Ex.
27: 20-21). This is the precedent for the catholic Church’s custom of burning a candle at all times before the tabernac-
le, the house where the Eucharistic Body of Christ is reserved under lock and key.
Many other religions often note that Catholic churches typically are open to the public throughout the week, whereas
most Protestant churches are generally closed during the week. The difference is the Eucharist. Praying in a Catholic
church before the Holy Eucharist is different than praying at home, Christ is substantially present in the tabernacle. The
lamp is always burning in the Catholic Church- it is a sign saying, “Christ is here in the Holy Eucharist within this taber-
nacle. His heart is burning with love for you.” ‘Mystically Christ is the true light which enlighteneth every man.” (Jn 1:9)
According to St. Alphonsus Liguori, it would be a grave sin to leave the altar of the Blessed Sacrament without this can-
dle or lamp burning for any prolonged length of time, such as a day or several nights.
The candle also helps to remind us that we are in sacred space, that Jesus is truly present. It’s not simply a decoration or
an adornment, it is a reminder that Jesus is present, and if Jesus is present, our actions should respond accordingly, with
deep reverence and respect. What an incredible gift we have in the Eucharist and how beautiful is it to have a candle
burning there always.
Peace,
Deacon Marty
