Remove existing 132,000 volt overhead lines We’ll remove some of WPD’s existing overhead lines: from Bridgwater to Avonmouth approximately 1.5 km of existing overhead line to Weston-super-Mare. We’re also building a short section of 132,000 volt overhead line between the new substation and the existing line that goes to Churchill. This work will be done by WPD and will include: installing temporary construction compounds building temporary entrances and access roads to allow construction traffic to enter site from the local highway building temporary overhead lines to divert electricity from the working area removing approximately 550 m of existing overhead line to Churchill. We’re building a new high-voltage electricity connection between Bridgwater and Seabank near Avonmouth. It is a significant investment in the region’s electricity network and will connect new sources of low-carbon energy, including EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C, to homes and businesses The new connection will be 57 km long – consisting of 48.5 km of overhead line and 8.5 km of underground cable through the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). To minimise the impact on the local landscape and make way for the new connection, we’re removing over 67 km of existing overhead lines and pylons. We’re also building substations at Sandford and Shurton, modifying existing pylons at Hinkley Point and Seabank, extending Seabank substation, and making some changes to the existing local electricity network owned by Western Power Distribution (WPD). This leaflet is one of a series of briefing sheets summarising the project and providing information about what’s going on along the route of the new connection. The connection and associated infrastructure works will take around eight years to build, including reinstatement and replacement planting. January 2020

Vegetation clearance, replacement planting and reinstatementWe need to clear some trees and hedgerows along the route of the new connection before starting construction. After the work has been completed in each area, we will carry out landscaping, replacement planting and reinstatement. We’ll be replacing trees and hedgerows at a ratio of 4 to 1 and wherever possible, we’ll replant in the same location. Where this is not possible, we’ll plant at an agreed location nearby. We’re using planting to screen parts of the development and we’ve committed to extra planting within 3 km of the development, as this will reduce the overall impact of the new connection and enhance local landscape and biodiversity.
