Involve Swindon

Involve Swindon is a successful network of businesses that encourage their employees to volunteer in the community, whether this be on traditional team volunteering days or offering their skills to support a local charity with a short piece of skilled work. Involve operates in Swindon and the surrounding area but is happy to consider projects from other areas. We are always looking for new projects that employee volunteers can get involved in such as:

• Team challenges: Include One-off practical tasks like nature conservation, gardening or decorating to improve parks or outdoors areas, community centres, village halls, scout or guide huts or schools; or organising trips or parties for a charity’s users or undertaking one-off fund-raising challenges or cleaning, clearing, sorting stock and anything in between.

• Providing business expertise: Completing a short project for a charity such as providing support with Excel, designing new fundraising projects, mentoring charity staff or supporting beneficiaries

To help Involve to help you, please contact us with your ideas for how employee volunteers could support your organisation or community during 2018. If you wish to discuss any project prior to submission, please ring Jo Banks at Volunteer Centre Swindon on 01793 420557 or e-mail [email protected]

Happy New Year to all our customers!

Market re-opens in 2018 on Friday 12th January between 9 and 11 am, at the Ellendune

Community Centre, Wroughton. All our usual produce will be available, although fresh

fruit and vegetables are in short supply at this time of year.

It will soon be time for the first of the new season’s Seville Oranges ….. which means the

first of this year’s Seville Orange Marmalade should hit the market shelves within the next

month or so. Keep a look out for it, as this sharp tangy marmalade is very popular, and

the Seville Orange season is very short. If you bought, or were given, a jar of preserves

from the market at Christmas, come and tell us what you thought of it. If you’d like some

more, please ask. We may have some at home even if there is none on the shelves. If

you’d like us to make a particular type of jam or chutney during 2018, tell us about it. If

we can find a recipe and get the ingredients, we’ll have a go at making it.

You may have heard that we now sell bacon rolls on the first Friday of the month. At the

beginning of December we served fifty five bacon rolls (and five fish finger rolls) in just

over an hour! No wonder some of you had to wait a few minutes …….. each one is

cooked to order and the chef had a job to keep up. It’s a pity that we are not on Trip

Adviser as some of the verbal reports have been very complimentary. So, if it is the first

Friday of the month, forget breakfast at home, come and pick up a bacon roll at market.

The next opportunity to try one is on Friday 2nd February. Something to look forward to

on a frosty morning!

Stay safe and keep warm.

Tina Grice

CRIB EXHIBITION

We were thrilled when we counted the cribs after we had set them out around the church in Broad Hinton on the weekend of 9th & 10th December. They numbered 100 as well as some illustrations and written articles. Many thanks to those who loaned us their treasures and all who came to view them. Weather conditions limited visitor numbers on the Sunday but all who came enjoyed delicious cakes with their tea or coffee. We received many compliments from visitors who enjoyed viewing the wide variety of nativity scenes from many parts of the world. They were all shapes and sizes. The smallest was in a walnut shell and the largest covered an entire table top. Although entrance was free, the sale of refreshments and donations have benefitted church funds by almost £300. Many thanks to all who supported us throughout the weekend. Jane O’Neill

Shop Phone Number: 01672 539200

Winter opening hours Monday- Friday 9am - 5pm, Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays 10am 4pm

As the days get darker don’t forget that a trip to your community shop will save you petrol and time. Meet the Team Lizzie Daley has volunteered in the shop for over 6 years. Lizzie enjoys working in the shop and meeting lots of interesting people. Her favourite products are HFT shortbread, the organic brown bread which we bake in store, and Brinkworth blue cheese. Lizzie works as a Teaching assistant and as well as the shop she also does lots of other volunteer roles in the community. She is the treasurer at Avebury Church and she is the foundation governor at Kennet Valley School. If you would like to join Lizzie and the other team of volunteers in the shop, please call Lyn, Lynda or Holly at the shop on 01672 539200. If you don’t want to serve customers but would like to support the shop in other ways, we are also looking for volunteers to do baking, cleaning and to deliver to customers. Shop News Customers may have noticed that some of our prices have gone up, as they have in many shops. We are sorry about this, but our costs have increased and in order to be able to continue to trade we have had to make some price rises in the last couple of months. However, we are now getting to a better financial situation and have already been able to reduce the prices for milk and sliced bread. We hope that in 2018 we will be able to do the same for other essentials. Local Deliveries Please don’t forget that we can deliver to you if you are unable to come into the shop. Just give us a ring on the number at the top of this article. We would like to thank all our customers and volunteers for their support this year, and wish you all a very Happy New Year. View from the Rectory

It seems a long time since November when we held an interfaith Vigil at Avebury for

peace and reconciliation between all faiths. We start a new year during which we shall

be remembering the end of World War 1. We see so much around us that is not peaceful.

Sometimes even those who say they want an end to hostilities only want this on their

own terms and leave no room for change or understanding. That evening in November

felt like a building of community as people of faith from many corners of the world joined

locals and regular worshippers to stand against sectarian violence and promote

acceptance.

In addition to the 70 adults and 8 young people, local Christians, Wiccans, Quakers,

Druids, Buddhists, Ba’hais, Hindus and Muslims, we enjoyed the company of an

international lawyer from Iran, a Somali professional footballer, a Kurdish agnostic who

sang his heart out about love, Tibetans, Kuwaitis, Sudanese and Iraqis, Eritreans and

Afghanis. Two little Nigerian girls were transported by the beauty of the ‘human angels

‘who sang, drummed, spoke loving words, danced, prayed, lit candles and one, aged 9,

said it would be wonderful if the whole world got on together like that in peace. Peace

making is more than saying ‘draw a line and move on’. It is more than choosing to let go

of your own hurt or ego, faith or ideology to give way to an oppositional opinion or

viewpoint. It means being brave enough to stand on someone’s ‘holy ground’ with

respect and curiosity.

One young man approached and indicating the chancel, asked if he might pray at the

altar. A man of a faith other than Christian he removed his shoes and followed me. To

my joy and surprise he went onto the altar steps and knelt and prayed. There he

remained for some time. His face was radiant as he returned. He felt love from

strangers - something he hadn’t felt in a very long time, and he wanted to bring his

thanks. He stood on holy ground and I believe the Holy One stood with him.

Who do we see when we look at one another? A child of God? Do we recognise that

holy ground is where we walk? It takes courage to remove our shoes and seek beyond

the words and emotions to the hearts of others who are and will always be different from

us. Different they may well be - but that does not mean they cannot be our beloved

friends. A New Year and a new beginning for the world – what reconciliation will we

pursue in honour of those who died to make us free - God and man alike?

Do you need a period of quiet after the Christmas festivities?

Come to East Kennett church for our meditation (Taize) services for just 30

minutes to experience peace and tranquillity.

Wednesday 10th January at 7.00pm

Wednesday 24th January at 7.00pm

……….. and then fortnightly throughout the year.
