Our chapel has a new window, a beautiful mosaic created by Rhys Greene. On December 3, 2017, during Bishop Sloan’s visit, the window was dedicated. Below, Rhys explains the history and emblematic elements of the window’s design.

CANTERBURY CHAPEL MOSAIC

The Canterbury Cross is a symbol of the Anglican Church throughout the world. The original was discovered in 1867 during excavations in St. George Street, Canterbury, England. It dates to circa 850 A.D. It was cast in bronze and now appears metallic brown/gold in color, with a rich green patina. The glass that was chosen for the Canterbury Cross in the mosaic is visually suggestive of the color of the original. The small crosses represent the uniqueness of our parishioners, their diverse races and family units, and their individual gifts and talents. Beginning in the top-left corner and moving clockwise, you will find crosses symbolizing the following.

Lesbian couple with one natural child Heterosexual couple Gay couple with one adopted child Single person Gay or lesbian couple Caucasian family with two children African American family with two children Single person Single parent with one child

The inset plaque reminds us to love God and our neighbors (or – reminds us of the two greatest commandments). God’s gift and God’s call are the same. Everyone’s loved, love everyone. I would like to thank each and every person who has shared ideas, thoughts, encouragement, time and talent for this project. I am most appreciative of Lois Lewis, who has aided and assisted me since this mosaic was first conceived.

Icicle Retreat

NOTE: This issue of Canterbury Tales is abbreviated by design, in order to give our contributors time off during the busy holiday season. In these pages, you’ll find the most vital information for the coming month. We’ll return to full coverage in February’s issue.

Here at the end of 2017, I am reflecting on a year that seemed to zoom by, and looking toward a new beginning with hope and gratitude. No matter what is happening in the world outside of Canterbury, we remain a focused group for spreading the message of love. Thank you, Canterbury, for supporting the needy in our com-munity. You do this every week through your donations of food and funds to Deacon’s Deli and Meals on Wheels. You do this by cooking, driving to deliver meals, and placing funds in those yellow envelopes. Thank you also for providing for communities in Houston, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, during their times of crisis. Thank you, Canterbury, for welcoming students, visitors, and everyone seeking refuge from difficult situations. Thank you, Canterbury, for welcoming open discussion and being a place where everyone’s thoughts are valued. Thank you, Canterbury, for a successful Stewardship season. Your response will allow us to continue assisting God’s children throughout 2018. Peace and love to you all. —Angela, senior warden

Foyer groups will stay intact through the spring.

*** During January, the Betak-Frangoulis Gallery will

continue displaying the work of Anna Sella.

In February, the gallery will honor Canterbury’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. This month-long exhibit will be held in conjunction with the inaugural Absalom

Jones celebration on February 17. Look for further details in next month’s issue and during chapel

announcements.

You are invited to attend the annual

Feast of St. Aelred of Rievaulx Service, Patron Saint of Integrity, an organization of the Episcopal

Church that advocates for the LGBTQ+ Community. This service will be held on Saturday, January 13th,

at 1:00 PM at Canterbury.

The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated by Bishop Kee Sloan, Bishop of Alabama, and The Reverend Deon K.

Johnson, Rector at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brighton, Michigan, will be the preacher. A reception will follow the

service in the Student Center. All are encouraged and welcome to attend this beautiful service. Please come!

Early in January, Camille Cornett and Angela Hammond leave on a

mission trip to Haiti. Please support them with your prayers and by donat-

ing children’s Tylenol to their supplies by January 4th. The collec-tion box is in the student center.

If you cannot serve on the day assigned, please contact another server to take your place and call the office at 345-9590, so the Sunday bulletin can be corrected.
