(Most tours are scheduled during the day but there are some occasional evenings too!) Join the fun of taking small groups around the Denver station and informing folks of all ages about the wonders of Rocky Mountain PBS. It’s easy – we have tour scripts and we train you. Generally, our tours last approximately an hour. You don’t have to be an expert. Just bring your smile and laughter with you. Tour guides are some of the best goodwill ambassadors that we have. Rocky Mountain PBS is committed to our public and that means that we welcome the public into our station more than any other TV station in town. We need your help. Document Preservation/Data Input for Station’s Archived Memories Project Join a small team of delightful and dedicated volunteers during the day at the RMPBS station (1089 Bannock Street, Denver). You will work together with other volunteers to preserve important documents for the station’s archives. Volunteers needed for KUVO’s Winter Pledge Drive in February KUVO is looking for fun, jazzy volunteers to help answer phones during Winter Pledge Drive – February 16-27, 2017. Help Us Preserve Our Programming! Are you a fan of Rocky Mountain PBS and have enjoyed our programming over the years? If you answered yes, we would love to have your help preserving these productions. It’s both a walk down memory lane and a peek into the future. Join other volunteers who are doing this preservation work with the Station’s Archived Memories project. Basic computer skills would be needed and database experience is a plus. You will be trained by fellow knowledgeable volunteers. This is an on-going weekly opportunity for 4 hours/week. For the first 2 months, you would need to be trained on Mondays. Leadership Opportunities with Station’s Archived Memories Did you know that Rocky Mountain PBS has the ONLY volunteer-driven archive project among all the PBS stations nationwide? There are more than 30 volunteers working hard throughout the year. The award-winning Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) project is 16 years old and provides an incredible electronic time machine for RMPBS and the community. Rocky Mountain PBS’s has existing leadership opportunities with SAM. We’re looking for self-starters, ready to offer guidance, and with either experience in history, archives and library sciences, or a leadership attitude and willingness to learn. Front Desk Volunteers at KUVO Are you a supporter of KUVO Jazz Radio? Looking to spend some quality time with an organization that is deeply involved in its community? Support us by volunteering at the front desk on Mondays and/or Tuesdays! As the KUVO receptionist, you will be the first line of contact for our viewers, community members and business professionals who enter into the building or call our station directly. Answering the phone and directing calls to the correct employee in the building is essential to navigate the flow of call traffic. Greeting our guests and notifying the employee they are meeting with is part of the duties as well. Behind the desk, you may also be given specific tasks from our employees, such as mailing duties. Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn ) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast. Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist

with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station. Calling on volunteers and staff at the KRMA station and KUVO to nominate a very special volunteer and/or a special Denver staff member—those folks whom you have observed giving exceptional and cheerful service to the Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO community. They exceed expectations and often work quietly out of the limelight. You may see these people, perhaps in a daily basis or maybe during a special event or project working quietly and efficiently with no thought of reward or accolade. The nomination deadline is January 16, 2017. The nominations need not be elegantly written, just heartfelt. You will be reminded again in early January of the deadline. However, we’d appreciate your submitting nominations early while the idea is in your mind. Patricia Laverty (s-KRMA) Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO Thrive on the Generosity of Volunteers and Community Philanthropy Did you know that the generous and dedicated volunteers for KUVO and RMPBS donate their time and talent to the tune of approximately 13,000 hours annually? Those hours are worth $260,000! Each and every day, volunteers walk through our doors and give so generously. Volunteers allow Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO to fulfill the mission of educating, informing and entertaining Colorado citizens. And, on Colorado Gives Day-December 6, 2016, Colorado folks donated approximately $226,594 to KUVO and Rocky Mountain PBS. Colorado Gives Day is the state’s largest day of giving. Generous donors gave a total of $33.8 million to 2,111 nonprofits in just 24 hours. This is an increase over the $28.5 million that was donated on Colorado Gives Day 2015. A portion of the $33.8 million raised came through KidsforColoradoGives.org, a new website designed specifically for young givers. We cannot thank enough all the volunteers and donors who donate time and dollars so generously and believe in and support public service media! Volunteers Provide Key Ingredient to Another Successful StoryMakers Year! 58 volunteers delivered another successful StoryMakers contest along with 640 talented student authors. Each year, Rocky Mountain PBS presents StoryMakers, a state-wide short story contest for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The Douglas County Libraries generously supports this extraordinary program. Students submit original short stories of 700-1000 words. Finalists are invited to a one-day workshop at Rocky Mountain PBS where they enjoy writing sessions with Dr. Andrea Bobotis from Lighthouse Writers Workshop and Laura Frank, President of News, Rocky Mountain PBS. Volunteers carry the heavy load for this beloved program donating approximately 200 hours. They provide the administrative support and they pour over the hundreds of stories to determine the list of finalists. The StoryMakers volunteer corps is led by volunteer Lauren Simmons who graciously (and with good humor) steers the ship. It is such a challenging process because there are so many talented young authors in Colorado. But, it is rewarding work knowing that Rocky Mountain PBS is nurturing the next generation of storytellers! On behalf of Rocky Mountain PBS, the StoryMakers’

By Pat Hoeft, SAM Photo Chair The Station's Archived Memories (SAM) board and staff liaisons met on Monday, December 19, 2016 to continue the discussion of priorities and upgrades to the archives' procedures, the process fondly known as SAM 2.0. The volunteer-run Station's Archived Memories committee is always eager to talk with interested new volunteers who have at least 8 to 10 hours per month to devote to this dynamic group. The archive work is done primarily at KRMA during business hours though there is also at-home transcription for volunteers of the Oral History committee. Information is entered into the databases using Mac desktop computers in the SAM Office at Rocky Mountain PBS. Training is detail-oriented but easy for PC users to pick up. Volunteer at Rocky Mountain PBS

Volunteers play a critical role at Rocky Mountain PBS. The Rocky Mountain PBS volunteer corps donates (on average) 15,000+ hours per year. They expand the capacity of the organization in order to enhance the public outreach and sustain viewer support of the mission--to inspire people to engage in deeper, more meaningful ways with the world around them. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to work together supporting and leading station initiatives. We hope that you might consider donating your time and talent to Rocky Mountain PBS. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and new opportunities are constantly popping up. The best way to learn about these is to sign up in our database or contact volunteer coordinator, Susan Barber (susanbarber@rmpbs.org). Below is a list of some of the many opportunities available: Station Tours: RMPBS is a PUBLIC broadcasting station and we invite the public into the station at any opportunity! This is a very important piece of community outreach. We rely on our volunteer tour guides. Tours are done primarily during the day/business hours (but we also provide occasional weekday evening tours). It’s great fun and training is provided. On-Call Volunteers: Sign up to be on our on-call list for a variety of short-notice, immediate jobs from mailings, to button making, to data input, “faux” phone banks and many more! Photographers: If you enjoy taking pictures and you are pretty good, sign up to be a

photographer! We take pictures of everything!!! Pledge: Pull a team together of your friends for an evening and take over the phones! or, volunteer individually to assist with the production and logistics Super School News: Coach a classroom in preparation for an on-air news broadcast about students’ schools. This nationally recognized program provides students with the opportunity to get a taste of broadcast journalism. Station’s Archived Memories (SAM): Help keep the history of Rocky Mountain PBS alive. A nationally recognized volunteer-driven project, Station’s Archived memories welcomes volunteers interested in preserving photographs, memorabilia, oral histories, local productions and station documents related to Rocky Mountain PBS. StoryMakers: Perfect for the volunteer who has limited time! Be a reader/judge for this state-wide short story contest for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Help us judge and read over 900 stories. Newsletters: Write articles, coordinate newsletters that include the monthly Volunteer Bulletin and the Cooks Club Newsletter. Community Outreach: Perfect opportunity to work with friends on weekdays, weekends or evenings for screenings, staffing booths at community events (including jazz events and the like).
