Onceyou’vedecidedyouneedanalarm,youmustthendecidewhichtypeisrightforyou.Therearegenerallytwotypes:perimeteralarms,designedtoprotectdoorsandwindows,andareaalarmsthatprotectinteriorspaces.Aperimeteralarmsystemprovidesprotectionthroughanetworkofsensorsondoorsandwindows.Asensorcanbeamagneticcontact,stripoffoiltapeoravibrationdetectorthattriggersanalarmwhenadoororwindowisopenedorbroken.
Apopulartypeofperimetersystemincludessmallplasticdisc-shapedsensorsthatstickinthecornerofawindow.Theysensethesoundwavestransmittedwhentheglassbreaks.Shouldaburglartrytogetinbypryingopenadoororwindoworsmashingtheglass,thealarmwillbeactivatedbeforetheburglarcanenterthehome.
Anareaalarmsystemreliesonelectronicsensorsto“sweep”aportionofaroomorhallway.Sensorscomeinmanyformswithvaryingfunctions.Theyaredesignedtorespondtochangesinlight,pressure,temperature,soundormovement.
Sensorsusedinbothperimeterandareaalarmsystemsareconnected,eitherbywiresorminiatureradiotransmitters,toacentralcontrolpanel.Wirelesssystemsareeasiertoinstall,butreplacingthebatteriesthatpowerthetransmitterscanbetime-consumingandcostly.Wirelesssystemsarealsohardertotestforcorrectoperation.
Rememberthataperimeteralarmactslikeanearlywarningsystem,detectinganintruderwhoisstilloutside;theareaalarmwillonlyalertyouonlyaftertheintruderhasbrokenin.

Thewaterheater'sthumpingiscausedbysedimentthathasbuiltupinthebottomofthemetaltankoraroundtheelectricalheatingelements.
Theillustrationshowsagaswaterheaterwiththisproblem.Thesedimentinterfereswithevenheattransferandallowssteambubblestoform.Thebubblesfloatupwardandthenimplodewithamuffledthump.
Youcouldtrytodrainsedimentfromthebottomofthetank.Attachahosetothedrainvalveandrouteittoasafeplumbingfixture,suchasafloordrain.Becareful;thewaterwillbehot.Drainafewgallons;repeatthisseveraltimes.Often,though,sedimentisdifficulttoremovefromthetank.
Thethumpingdoesnotcauseanydamagetothewaterheater,butitcertainlyisannoying.Considerinstallingawatersoftenertoeliminatethehardwatersediment.
