LOOKING AHEAD TO 2016 Happy New Year!!!! Hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season. May your 2016 be filled with love, laughter, passion and 365 full nights of sleep. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with your CASI chili family the arrival of 2016. The outlook for 2016 looks bright with CASI kicking off celebrating our 50th Terlingua Championship event. Please be sure to read the Woodbridge article in this edition of the Trails and support CASI and Woodbridge by purchasing a bottle of wine from your local retail store and receiving some great discount offers from our other CASI sponsors and a great chili recipe from the 2014 CASI Champion, Jason Goains.

Your CASI Board has scheduled the Winter Workshop for Saturday, February 20, and the Winter Board meeting for Sunday, February 21 at the Irving Elks Lodge. Also, the 2016 Great Pepper’s Meeting will be returning to Austin at the Holiday Inn-Midtown on September 10. 2016 brings us CASI’s 50th celebration of the CASI Terlingua Championship. CASI is the only or-ganization that has been involved from the beginning and the only organization involved with the other 49 Terlingua championships. The 50th planning committees have already looked at some new, exciting events. More details will follow about the planned TICC Wednesday night-time lighted parade and a ‘50s theme party following the parade to Krazy Flats. Also, more details will follow about a planned TICC Thursday’s Triple Crown Trifecta, consisting of an appetizer cookoff, a backyard steak cookoff, and a des-sert contest, sponsored by Triple Crown Whiskey and Tequila Rose. And there are rumors of a CASI past Champions’ Challenge. The latter part of 2016 will bring a roll-out of the new revised casichili.net website and CASI business system which will include: a CASI members-only section for on-line membership renewal, on-line reset of your password, view your cookoff points, view your competitor’s points, and search for CASI events. Also new members that want to join the CASI fun can join on-line with their credit cards, create their own password and fill in their own profile. The CASI IT committee is hard at work to make these things happen during 2016. The year 2016 looks rewarding for the CASI members, so invite your neighbors and friends to join us in Chili, Charity, and Fun!!!!!

From the Editor

Howdy, y’all! This month I have officially taken up the reins of the Terlingua Trails, or at least the training wheels. After working with Dana Plocheck for the last few months, I can tell you that we all owe a great debt of gratitude for her six (SIX!) years in charge of this publication. There is a long list of things that have to be done for each issue, and she makes it all look so easy. It isn't! I’m sure that I will be making mistakes – sometimes that’s the only way you can tell I’m doing anything – but I promise that I will do my best to make sure y’all get all the CASI news and info that will fit into each month’s paper. Please send me pictures and articles from your cookoffs and other chili-related activities as soon as possible after the events, and don’t forget to identify all of the people in your pics. Everyone likes seeing their names and pictures in the paper. Well, I guess when it's something nice. I hope y'all all had a happy, healthy, and safe holiday, and wish you and yours a prosperous 2016!

Holy Cow, Chiliheads,Cowtown is Moving Again!

The 40th Cowtown Chili Cookoff will feature a new venue and new dates so mark your maps and calendars now. May 13-15, 2016 will find the chili wagons assembled at the Vineyards Camp-grounds & Cabins on Grapevine Lake, at 1501 N. Dooley Street, Grapevine, Texas 76051.

“Last year’s venue was nice but when we learned what they were going to charge us to return, we decided to look elsewhere,” stated David Sexton, Cowtown Great Pepper. “The Vineyards Campgrounds in Grapevine has so much to offer that it was an easy decision to move the cookoff to this location. This campground was the TACO Park of the Year in 2014. And while we were in the moving mode, we decided to move the dates to May 13, 14, and 15 to avoid the spring break crowds.” The charity will again be No Brother Fights Alone.

The area for the CCO is a peninsula on the left side of the campgrounds with a pavilion in the middle. There are RV spots with full hookups, cabins and lots of room for day campers and tailgaters. Opportunities for fishing, boating and water sports are just steps away. There will even be scheduled shuttle buses to take cooks to downtown Grapevine for shopping, dining and wine tast-ing.

All RV spots and cabins are at a 25% discount. For reserva-tions call 817-329-8993 and mention you are with the chili cookoff. Golf carts are welcomed.

Cowtown hopes to make this weekend a double automatic qualifier with over 100 cooks on Saturday the 14th and the official pod cookoff on Sunday the 15th. Thursday night arrivals are wel-comed with CCO activities kicked off Friday night with a beans and salsa contest for cash prizes. Saturday brings the CCO, grind only and CASI rules, branding iron trophies for the top ten chilis and top three shows. Entry fee is $25.00 and turn-in is at 1:00pm, plus goody bags for the first 100 cooks registered. The 10th North Texas Junior Chili Championship (ages 8-17) will also be held with tro-phies for the top ten junior chilis. Entry is $10 and turn is 12 noon, CASI rules as well. Saturday evening features a BBQ dinner and cooks are asked to please bring a side dish to share.

Sunday brings the Cowtown Pod Chili Cookoff with an auto-matic qualifier for TICC. Entry fee is $20, turn-in at noon, grind only, CASI rules.

Send early registration to David Sexton, 5615 Goodwin Ave., Dallas, TX 75206. Make checks payable to Cowtown CASI. Must be received by May 1s, 2016. Get more information on the Cowtown CASI Facebook page or contact David Sexton at [email protected] or 817-793-0656.

Le Grande Tour de Poivre

In honor of CASI’s 50th Anniversary, the Le Grande Tour de Poivre is going dark at TICC. That’s right, a NIGHTTIME LIGHT PARADE. The golf cart parade will be held on Wednesday evening following the Tequila Rose and TIT parties. Parade will begin at 9pm. This year’s theme will be 1950s ROSWELL ALIEN INVASION. The parade will once again end at Krazy Flats Saloon and the festivities will continue in the Si Brown Louisiana Hot Sauce Pavilion with a 1950s costume party and dance. I wanted to get this out early so everyone can be preparing for the event. Battery-powered lights should all be on sale right now so STOCK UP! Portable inverters should also be a good buy as well to help you along. Costumes, lights, music and a great party all in celebra-tion of the organization we love. If you have any questions you can contact me at [email protected]. Take care everyone, and see you all soon.

It is the time of year to think about scholarships. If you know a senior please encourage them to get their paperwork in to compete for the scholarships. If they have any questions please direct them to me.

I am also in need of one more volunteer to serve on the Scholarship Committee. It is a three-

year commitment, and you would only read applications during the months of February and March. You would then report back to me your top ten students. It is very rewarding work. Please contact me ASAP.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Rodeo Club from Sul Ross in Alpine volunteers to run the conces-sion stand on Saturday so that the chili cooks can focus on their chili. In exchange for that CASI makes a donation to the Rodeo Club Scholarship Fund. This letter is from a student who received that scholarship this year.

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for the scholarship I received. It means so much to me that people like yourselves help rodeo kids like me with college tuition. Coming from a church-going back-ground, I give all thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to go to college and meet amazing people like you.

This year rodeoing I have had an awesome time getting to travel to different rodeos and competing as a college rodeo athlete. To me, the best experiences a guy can have are rodeoing and getting to meet people. I can’t thank you enough for helping me out with school so I can get an education at Sul Ross State University and be on the Rodeo Team. The town of Alpine is such a cool place with awesome people like yourselves that are always willing to help one another.

In conclusion your scholarship is a blessing in my life, allowing me to be able to attend the school that I love with a great education and still get to rodeo. I thank you so much. God bless you.

Jeffrey Latham

Page 17Terlingua TrailsJanuary 2016On the Chili Trail... VASA Pod held their 34th annual Thanksgiving weekend CCO at their new venue, the Victoria Coleto Creek KOA RV Park. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the new venue – what’s not to love about full RV hookups?! The Pod joined with the RV Park residents for a delicious Thanksgiving meal for those that came in earlier than Friday. Pod mem-bers fried turkeys, the CASI President carved them and everyone brought their favorite sides. Over 50 people enjoyed delicious food and fellow-ship. It was a full weekend with three days of various competitions, but the star cookoff was the Pod COO on Saturday. Congrats to Sandy Thom-as, our back-to-back winner and auto-qualifier! Our Junior winner was Hailey Cavender. As per Pod tradition, a traveling trophy for the first Pod member qualified the previous year was presented to Becky Allen. Also, the trophy for furthest distance traveled was presented to none other than the Swamp Girl, Janet Nash! A huge thank you to everyone who came this year, and all of you should be sure to put this CCO on your calendar for next year! Becky Allen

Woodbridge Kicks Off CASI's 50th Celebration

Tracy Frisbie, Constellation Brands Marketing Manager, announced that Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wine is celebrating CASI’s 50th anniversary this winter with a nationwide chili-themed promotion to assist Woodbridge wine drinkers with preparing our favorite cold weather meal. Woodbridge teamed up with other CASI sponsors – Mrs. Renfro’s Salsas, Mexene Chili Powder, Louisiana Hot Sauce, and Casa Fiesta – to offer grocery shoppers savings on these premium items (where legal). Shoppers are encouraged through in-store signage on Woodbridge displays to purchase CASI sponsors’ products and prepare a meal perfect for football game TV watching or tailgating. The 2014 CASI champion, Jason Goain’s recipe is also featured. The recipe and coupons are available on Woodbridge displays. Woodbridge has been a proud sponsor of CASI since 2005. The Woodbridge winery in Lodi, California hosts the annual California CASI cookoff each October. Woodbridge wines are easy to pair with various meals and flavors. The Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wine style is marked by bright fruit flavors and smooth finishes made to complement a wide variety of foods. Robert Mondavi created Woodbridge in 1979 so that every table in America could enjoy a quality glass of wine with dinner. If you prefer your chili with extra hot spice, we recommend pairing your meal with a lighter wine like the sweeter Robert Mondavi Moscato or refreshing and crisp Pinot Grigio. The lighter styles of wine will cool off your palate. If you really like heat, try pairing your extra spicy chili with Robert Mondavi Zinfandel. If you chili flavoring is mild, the Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot will provide a smooth, velvety pairing. The main rule is to drink what you like. Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wines are fruit-forward and balanced, making them ideal for everyday enjoyment. Look for Woodbridge wine and the CASI sponsors’ consumer savings offers in your local grocery retailer (where legal) this January, and cook up something special for your next football gathering. And please explore our website at http://www.woodbridgewines.com.

Free Quarter Page Adto CASI Pods, State, Regional and

International Opens As a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter page ad in the Terlingua Trails, each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month before your cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarter page we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI Calendar" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as you request your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
