VESTRY NOMINEES

Junior Warden nominees:

Steve Van Albert is finishing up a two-year term as Junior Warden. During this time technology has got-ten up and running, the mold remediation has been taken care of, and the buildings continue to be main-tained as quickly as funds are available. Steve believes he still has more to do and would love to do it.

Vestry Members for 3-year terms:

Michael Betteridge grew up in Liberty Grove United Methodist Church in Burtonsville. In 1995 his father became ill and through a series of events that unfolded in that journey to his father's death in 1997, he gave his life to Christ. He attended his first Emmaus/Cursillo weekend in 1997 and through this spiritual renewal ministry, he went on to team on many Emmaus weekends. Additionally, he began Kairos Prison Ministry in 1997. Michael married Donna Lackey in 2001 and began attending All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick where they were both actively involved. He sang in All Saints’ choir for 10 years. They began attending Harriet Chapel in the Catoctin Episcopal Parish after that and then moved into Donna's parents house in 2014 which brought them to Transfiguration, the church that his wife, Donna Lackey Betteridge, grew up in and which her parents were active members of for over 50 years. Donna and he feel like they have come home, and they want to do everything they can to see Transfiguration flourish.

Hyacinth Fray's first term has allowed her to participate in the shared responsibilities of deciding church matters. She says with gratitude and respect that she is willing and able to contribute as her abilities allow and would appreciate the opportunity to continue to do so. Her hope is to work with fellowship hour as Ladi Gray-Coker takes a time of respite after serving in that capacity over the past several years.

Vestry nominees continued from page 1

Lois Manderson (currently in Jamaica) would like to serve on the vestry of Transfiguration Parish. She has been a vestry member before and has a working knowledge of the spiritual and financial needs of the church. She thinks this past experience would serve the congregation and the church in its spiritual growth going forward.

Ruth Moore would like to stand for a second consecutive term on the vestry. She has spent the last couple of years working with the Christian Formation department. Under her leadership, The Story was taught and the follow up with new curriculum has created a new interest among our young people in Sunday school. She and the teachers have a good relationship. Ruth has also just completed a 4 year EFM (Education for Ministry) course, an intensive look at scripture, theology, church history, and ethics from an academic-reflective point of view.

Mark Pankow is one of those quiet, behind the scenes kind of members of Transfiguration. He has painted the Ashes to Go sign, been instrumental in the church sign, and been a part of TMG. Mark can often be seen speaking with visitors. He would like to use his gifts to help Transfiguration be all it can be.

One-Year Term:

Cheryl Church has previous vestry experience. She has worked on Education, Evangelism, and been ap-pointed to special task forces on developing welcoming materials and researching job descriptions. Over a three year period she attended The Journey with the rector, a joint venture in leadership training between the Episcopal and ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). She would like to serve over the next year and then see where she might best serve the Church after that.

New members to the vestry will be elected January 10 at the annual meeting.

The vestry will attend a short meeting following the annual meeting.

Vestry members, including those newly elected, need to put these dates on their

calendars:

Feb. 7—we will have pizza and a short meeting prior to our departure to hear Bishop

Curry at the Cathedral. We will depart at 1:30 from the parking lot. Anyone who

wants to join us, may meet and drive with or follow us at 1:30.

Feb 26 (12-6) and Feb 27 (9-3) is the Leadership Conference featuring Eric Law at

Our Saviour. This takes the place of our annual retreat. There will be no February vestry

meeting. However, each vestry member is invited to make an appointment with the rector to

discuss his or her vestry assignment for 2016.

Every year the Carmelite Pre-novi�ate Community at Carith House in Chicago on the Feast of the Epiphany (Januray 6) blesses their home.

We invite you to adopt this custom in your family. The family gathers to ask God’s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invita�on for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversa�ons, our work and play, our joys and sorrows.

A tradi�onal way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 16. The le�ers C, M, B have two meanings. They are the ini�als of the tradi�onal names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the La�n words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2016 is the year.

Blessing the Chalk V. Our help is the name of the Lord: R. The maker of heaven and earth. V. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in: R. From this �me forth for evermore. Let us pray. Loving God, bless this chalk which you have created, that it may be helpful to your people; and grant that through the invoca�on of your most Holy Name that we who use it in faith to write upon the door of our home the names of your holy ones Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, may receive health of body and protec-�on of soul for all who dwell in or visit our home; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

book of the same name, and produced a course aptly named “How to be a Crazy Chris�an.” One of the

choices for our Lenten program, a�er each of our delectable Lenten Suppers, we be the “Crazy Chris�an”

online course. Facilitated by Kathy Berry.

Each lesson consists of a short video presenta�on by Bishop Michael Curry, some self-assessment and discus-

sion, and an ac�on plan at the end of the course. His video topics are:

The Mission Strategy Team has been working for two years to create a strategy for Transfiguration to be A Place to Serve, where having gifts that differ...let us use them. Already some interesting things are transpiring: Kathy Berry has stepped up as an adult leader on an Appalachian Mission Trip the last week of June. She can be reached at 301-924-4043. Sarah Ingalls-Howard is doing the same for a mission trip that same week to Virginia Beach. She can be reached at 352-449-9388. Mother Meg has pledged $100 to each youth who signs up and goes.
