Watch Our Hydroponic Garden Grow!

You might have noticed how our garden in the front room has taken off. It has been providing our kitchen with fresh, dill, basil, oregano and parsley on a regular basis. Hydroponic gardens grow on water and the special pump provides the root system with an abundant balance of oxygen, water, and nutrients to enable plants to grow 5 times faster than when grown in soil. We have a second garden growing peppers and we hope to see an equally impressive harvest from that soon.

When Sarah Brown, daughter of abolitionist John Brown, realizes that her artistic talents may be able to help save the lives of slaves fleeing north, she becomes one of the Underground Railroad’s leading mapmakers, taking her cues from the slave code quilts and hiding her maps within her paintings. She boldly embraces this calling after being told the shocking news that she can’t bear children, but as the country steers toward bloody civil war, Sarah faces difficult sacrifices that could put all she loves in peril. Eden, a modern woman desperate to conceive a child with her husband, moves to an old house in the suburbs and discovers a porcelain head hidden in the root cellar—the remains of an Underground Railroad doll with an extraordinary

past of secret messages, danger and deliverance. Ingeniously plotted to a riveting end, Sarah and Eden’s woven lives connect the past to the present, forcing each of them to define courage, family, love, and legacy in a new way.

Every Thursday at 12pm, join Feldenkrais practitioner Jill Van Note at Moriah Senior Center for a series of exercises to reduce pain, improve posture, and help you feel like the best version of you!

Moving Forward with the Feldenkrais Method isn’t a conventional exercise program. It is very different. Instead of stretching or straining your muscles, the Moving Forward program features exercises that harness your brain to help your body. These exercises are safe, stress-free and involve no muscular exertion. Instead, they involve small easy movements and a pleasant process of paying attention to yourself.

What can this program do for me?

Moving Forward with the Feldenkrais Method can help you to reduce muscular aches and pains, improve your posture, improve your balance, and increase your flexibility and ease of movement. It can also help you to improve your breathing, reduce stress, improve your mood, and give you a sense of energy and optimism. The exercises in the Moving Forward program are also helpful after stroke or injury. In addition to helping you to heal and regain function, they can also help to rebuild your confidence in your body.

Introducing the at Moriah

There's a reason laughing makes you feel so darn good!

Various studies have shown how beneficial laughter can be. Along with relieving stress and lowering blood

pressure, laughter has been shown to relieve pain and boost the immune system.

Every month, a group of older adults goes to Washington’s Sibley Memorial Hospital, but they don’t see a

doctor or get tests. They’re not sick. They come just for laughs. They gather in a room next to the hospital

cafeteria for the “Laugh Café”. The price of admission is one joke, recited out loud.

Experts say laughing can be good for your health, and everyone in the room strongly agrees.

Moriah Senior Center’s “Good Laugh Café” is premiering Wednesday, January 6th at 2:45PM, right after

Ruthy’s exercise class. Join us for a good laugh and don’t forget to bring a joke to share!
