Ways and Means SEEKING CANDIDATE
January President’s Message: Hello Everyone! I hope your New Year is off to a prosperous start. We have an exciting year planned for FES and I look forward to seeing you at future meetings and events. First, I would like to remind everyone that we are still looking for a Ways and Means Director to join our board. This position is responsible for the upcoming Casino Night and will be supported by our outgoing director, Chad McKimm, for this event. Please let myself or any other board member know if you are interested in this very important position. On January 15th we celebrated the New Year with a joint social event with ASCE at the Fort Myers Brewing Company. We had a great turn out from FES, ASCE, and the Student Chapters from FGCU. We sampled some great food and beer as well as got insight on the behind-the-scenes working of the brewery and the permitting and zoning issues they faced. Everyone at the brewery was very friendly and hospitable. A great time was had by all! Coming up in February is our annual MATHCOUNTS event at FGCU. The competition is scheduled for February 14th and runs from 9 am to 4 pm. This event is an excellent opportunity to volunteer your time assisting local middle school students participate in this exciting challenge. If you are interested in the many volunteer opportunities, please contact Sally Goldman, MATHCOUNTS Coordinator. Come experience this impressive event and test your own math skills in the process. Engineer’s Week runs from February 22nd to 28th. The Lee County Board of County Commissioners will issue an E-Week Proclamation on February 17th at 9:30 am. The meeting will take place at 2100 Main Street, Fort Myers in the BCC Chambers. The Collier County Board of County Commissioners will issue an E-Week Proclamation on February 24th at 9 am. The meeting will take place at 3299 Tamiami Trail East, Naples. Both proclamations will take place at the beginning of the meetings. I encourage all engineers to attend these events and help raise awareness about our “quiet” contributions to society. Finally, our Annual Legislative Forum will be held on February 26th at 5:30 pm. This will be a dinner meeting with a discussion panel of 4 to 6 representatives from the State of Florida Legislature. The new FES / FICE Executive Director, Allen Douglas, will also be joining us. The purpose of this meeting is to create a dialogue with these local legislators by exchanging ideas and discussing issues that are of interest to our members and our profession. Complete details for these events can be found in this newsletter and on our website at www.fes-calusa.org. The newsletter and the website also provide a tentative schedule of our planned meetings and events for the rest of the year. Thank you for all of your support!
