BOB & Captain Hook A group of 10 students from year 11 of the John Colet School in Wendover have formed a franchise company called Colet Car Accessories and are competing in the Young Enterprise Scheme nationally with the support of Hyundai Motor UK. They have developed two unique products: BOB (Boot Organiser Basket) can be used when shopping to save bags. BOB has Velcro on his bottom so he will stay put in the boot of your car. He collapses when not in use or can be used as a boot organiser. Captain Hook is a powerful suction hook and can be used inside your car to hold a shopping bag or that take-away meal that normally ends up all over your carpet. They can be purchased now from their website www.ColetCarAccessories.co.uk with free local delivery.

We at both the Canal & River Trust (CRT) and Wendover Arm Trust (WAT), read the article – ‘Wendover Arm Restoration: What future for wildlife’ – in the December edition of Wendover News with interest . The whole canal network is a haven for all sorts of wildlife, indeed within the research undertaken over the last 2 years as we (previously British Waterways) prepared to transfer to Trust status it was one of the biggest positive attributes of inland waterways that the public say they appreciate. We work very closely with WAT on each phase of their works and we are confident that all works do comply and will continue to comply with all environmental and ecological requirements placed upon us. Any further phase of the Wendover Arm restoration will need to be subject to an independent Environmental Assessment. This will take into consideration protected species such as water vole and white-clawed crayfish. The assessment will need to propose mitigation for these species, if found during surveying, and this will be in consultation with Natural England. An Environmental Assessment will also address the potential deterioration in environmental status of the water body under the Water Framework Directive. In CRT we have nothing but admiration for the commitment and dedication that WAT are demonstrating through their amazing efforts to restore the Wendover Arm. They are held up as a role model of professionalism across inland waterway circles, often visited by other aspiring restoration groups wanting to emulate their achievements. I would ask local residents to understand the heritage, history and wildlife of the Wendover Arm so that they can give their support to WAT in their continued endeavours.

HS2 in court No decision has been taken, according to the government lawyers in court. Lawyers for 51M, the council group, argued that as a decision had been made, people in the North could not have their views heard as they had not been consulted. No decision means there cannot be a judicial review. The did or did not decide position depends on the judge and maybe appeals. The HS2 AA case was the one Wendover supported. Many thanks to all who contributed.
David Elvin QC made HS2AA's case over 4 - 5 December: stated simply, the Secretary of State for Transport had acted unlawfully by:
failing to comply with the Strategic
Environmental Assessment (SEA) Regulations. SEA requires that alternative routes be proper ly cons idered, environmentally assessed and consulted upon.
ignoring its obligations under the Habitats
Directive to undertake screening for protected species and habitats.
ignoring the provisions of the international
Aarhus Convention to provide information, participation in decisions and access to justice in environmental areas.
making significant changes to the route after
the 2011 consultation but then failing, as required by the SEA, to provide alternatives and re-consult on these changes.
The case also emphasised that a Hybrid bill
process means that the requirements of the EU Environmental Impact Assessment Directive would not be followed.
If any Judicial Review succeeds expect a DfT appeal and a need for cash to fund it.
Compensation consultation, low profile, is underway. An information sheet will be sent round in January or ask now. The autumn statement delayed the Northern Y- arm route till next year, even HS2 did not know! Some northern MP's are belatedly realising that they have misunderstood dates and benefits. Donate £5/mth by standing order to save Wendover! For information contact Antony C h a p m a n o n 0 1 2 9 6 6 2 3 7 3 0 ([email protected]).
John Savin, Wendover Stop HS2
The HS2 Property and Compensation Roadshow comes to Wendover Memorial Hall on 12 January 2012, 9am to 5pm.
We have opportunities to influence initial HS2 construction plans through the Community Forum and through our elected representatives in national and local government. It is important that everyone who has views on this, including constructive suggestions for improvement, should pass them on through organisations represented on the Community Forum such as the Parish Council, The Wendover Society and Wendover HS2.

Relieve Pain and remain injury-free Sports and remedial massage therapy combines general and deep tissue manipulation with various forms of stretching, to loosen up tight muscles, break up adhesions in muscle fibres, and restore and maintain the functionality of your muscles. Sports massage is something that can be of enormous benefit to almost everyone, greatly helping to reduce muscular pain. Considering the amount of time we spend sitting in front of a computer or in a car, tight shoulders, backs and hips are almost inevitable. Sports massage can help loosen tight muscles and improve posture and movement whether you are an athlete or not. A good sports massage therapist will be sure to work within pain tolerance and you should leave feeling better than when you arrived! A common misconception is that sports massage is only for those who already have an injury. However, while sports massage can be used to help treat injuries, it is far more effective when used as a strategy for preventing injury. Regular sports massage can reduce the risk of injury by helping muscles and joints remain supple and functional. In summary, sports and remedial massage therapy can help everyone, from elite athletes to office workers remain pain and injury free. Exercise is for life not just for January…. Every January lots of people join a gym or go to exercise classes brimming with optimism and “Christmas pudding”, and only half of these resolutions will make it as far as March.
So why is this? Mostly because people think we will lose weight if we go to the gym - yes and no! If your calories out exceed your calories in, then yes you are likely to lose weight, but unless you make these changes for good and not just for January you will spend a lifetime on the weight management roller coaster. Exercise is not just about losing weight; it reduces stress levels, improves posture, balance and agility and has too many health benefits to fit on this page.
If you approach exercise as one component in life to overall improved well being, then you have a chance of making it work for you. Make exercise part of everyday life:
Find something you enjoy. You are more likely to do it if you’re having a good time. Whatever you chose, if it’s a grind, and you don’t leave with a smile on your face, then it’s not for you, and you won’t keep it up.
Make it social. Join a class of like-minded people. Work out with friends (including furry) for brisk walks.
Get Sporty Was there a sport you enjoyed in the past, like netball, badminton, tennis or football? There are lots of options locally to get back to these sports again.
Take it outside. Exercising in natural environments increases energy, improves mental wellbeing, reduces tension, and studies show participants in outdoor exercise are more likely to repeat the activity.
Give yourself a goal. Enter an event, raise money for charity, have a target to work to, and reward yourself when you’ve achieved it.
Plan it. You’re more likely to do it if you have planned it in. Don’t let exercise be the first thing that you give up when you are under time pressure. Treat it as a priority in your life, and the rest of life will feel much more achievable.
Don’t overcommit. Be realistic: it’s better to over than under achieve.
JPR fitness specializes in outdoor exercise. We hold regular fit2run outdoor fitness classes in our local parks. Or join us for one of our Nordic Walks in Wendover Woods and the surrounding countryside. Call Jackie on 07788568204, visit www.jprfitness.co.uk or for more information (see advert on page 9).

Know anyone 13-20 wanting to lose weight? Gilly Franklin from Slimming World Wendover has been at Wendover Youth club for seven months and has seen some fabulous results from her members; one: 6 stone, two: five and a half stone, four: two stone, 12: one and a half stone and many more success stories. Slimming World is simply an educational group learning about what to eat and when to eat healthy and affordable foods. It costs £4.95 per week for weigh-in and a group therapy talk that lasts no longer than 45 minutes. Tips on recipes, foods and exercise is what you will find with lots of members chipping in with their successful experiences. Gilly is looking for a young adult to sponsor for 6 months funding the cost of the membership each week of £4.95. All she asks in return is that the lucky person comes along (if under the age of 18 with carer/parent or family friend) and Gilly will do the rest! Commitment to lose weight is the key, and the desire to be healthy and happy and fitter than now. This is a great opportunity for someone local to join a group of friendly and encouraging members. Gilly already has four teenagers in her group: two male and two female, all doing incredibly well. They meet at 7.30pm every Wednesday 52 weeks a year at the Wendover Youth Club, Wharf Road. So the excitement of Xmas is over but darkness is still closing in early for the next few months. Cat Booker’s Fitness & Nutritional Therapist, Jenny Phillips, tells us how to boost our mood and energy naturally. In clinical nutrition practice and small group or one to one sessions, we see a massive improvement when people are coached to eat fabulous and nutritious food, and train smartly. Always shop ahead, avoid processed food, and get active. Here are some top tips for you:
Low mood is linked to B vitamin,
magnesium, zinc & vitamin D deficiencies. The real power houses of vitamins are vegetables and fruits. For optimum health aim for 8-10 portions daily i.e. blueberries on your porridge, an apple as a snack, and 3 portions each with lunch and dinner. Failing that, boost nutrient levels with a good quality multivitamin & mineral.
Eat a serving of oily fish 3 times a week –
salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel, sardines, trout. Essential fats are vital for the functioning of the brain and nervous system, yet some studies have shown up to 95% of the population are deficient.
Keep your fuel supply stable - Focus on
complex carbs, such as oats, quinoa and brown rice or pasta or just go large on root veg, such as butternut squash, sweet potato and sweet corn.
Drink plenty of water – aim for 1.5 – 2 litres
daily, in addition to any tea or coffee. Herbal teas count as water intake as they are naturally caffeine free, or just enjoy a cup of hot water - surprisingly refreshing.
Reduce alcohol. It is packed full of sugar
(ever wonder why there are no calorie charts on the bottle?) and it is a GRADE 1 CARCINOGEN.
Get out more, get moving outdoors, attend a Bootcamp Class, or visit the fitness studio for Release & Move More Freely Stretch classes, Pilates, Kettlebells, TRX, Yoga, Circuits, HIIT, Personal Training in Stoke Mandeville Village, at the Belmore Centre.

Bust The WONDER BRA wasn’t invented in Wendover but the wonder of BUST was! Just 1½ years ago, the Rotary Club of Wendover and District formed the Breast Uplift and Support Team (BUST) in order to collect unwanted bras and donate them to third world countries where many women cannot afford a bra following surgery. Any bras left over are sold to help Breast Cancer Care and Research. We are very close to our target of having collected 7,500 bras by this Christmas and we hope to have collected 10,000 or more by the end of June 2013. Please go now, gather up any spare bras and take them to the Florence Nightingale Shop in Wendover as soon as possible. A lot of people will be very grateful. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT and keeeeeeeep collecting!

Christmas on the canal photos Each year we ask for art work to go on the front of our Christmas card and each year we get, in the main, photographs. As such we thought that it might be a good idea to remind you of the annual competition, the theme of which is The Wendover Arm Canal in Winter at the time that appropriate photos might be taken. So when the snow and ice are upon us, remember that we are likely to be asking for photos in sunny August/September and get snapping!

The Chiltern Society in Wendover On 19 September 2012, a team of volunteers from the Chiltern Society spent a day working on the footpaths in Wendover. We cleared fallen trees and overgrowth from the path through Sermon's Wood, removed a broken stile near Blackthorn Farm in Dunsmore and another further along the same path.
The Chiltern Society is a local charity which aims to conserve and protect the natural beauty, environment and heritage of the Chilterns. The Society's area includes 650 square miles across parts of four counties: Bucks, Beds, Herts and S Oxon. The charity has over 6,800 members and over 400 volunteers. It organises weekly walks; cycle rides; plus volunteer work parties to carry out footpath maintenance and conservation work in woodland and on common land.
Rights of Way and donated gates The Chiltern Society Rights of Way Group actively protects and restores open access land and public rights of way in the Chilterns – some 5,000 paths. This group of volunteers has now installed over 700 new gates in place of old stiles in order to improve public access to footpaths in the Chilterns. Many of these gates were given by members of the public in memory of loved ones through the Chiltern Society “Donate a Gate” scheme.
We welcome new members - come and join people like you who love the Chilterns. For more details please contact The Chiltern Society, The White Hill Centre, White Hill, Chesham HP5 1AG tel 01494 771250 www.chilternsociety.org.uk
MS Centre Pamper Evening The Chilterns MS Centre would like to send out a huge thank you to everybody who helped support the Pamper Evening on Friday 23 November. The evening was a massive success and it raised £2,475.07, all of which will be donated to the centre to continue supporting treatments for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Over the course of the evening there were various treatments available, including reflexology, Indian head massage and shellac nails. There were also a variety of stalls and demonstrations.

St John Ambulance As the nation’s leading first aid charity, St John Ambulance believes that no one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. Every year up to 140,000 people die unnecessarily. We are dedicated to teaching first aid in schools and communities across the country every year, and campaigning to raise awareness of the importance of life saving skills. St John Ambulance is encouraging people to learn first aid after a survey this year showed that five times as many people in the south east think cancer is a bigger killer than the lack of first aid. To raise essential funds we hope to organise a volunteer charity cash collection or attend any of your events you may hold. Please do let me know if, and when, a charity collection would be possible. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Library
Now OPEN! We’re happy to announce that Wendover Community Library (WCL) was declared open on Saturday, 1 December! A quartet of local music students from Sir Henry Floyd School provided some excellent music. Philip Mitchell, Chairman of the Community Library Committee, welcomed a large crowd of library users, local representatives and volunteers who came along to support the event. Margaret Aston, representing Bucks County Council, wished us every success. Mrs Olive Bradburn, (97), who was a volunteer at the original library in the early 1960s, then cut the ribbon and WCL was declared open! Performance poet/musician, James Carter, subsequently gave two enjoyable performances, entertaining all age groups. A smart library sign with our new logo is in place. The logo was created from designs by John Colet students: Luke and Mark Paulley, Leo Thompson and Emma Simpson. WCL now has its own website - www.buckscommunitylibraries.org/wendover - which can be used to access normal library services, to advertise or learn about activities and to link to other related local facilities.
We are pleased to welcome our new Library Manager Susan Morton along with her colleagues, Mel Greasby and Sarah Bone. Our newly trained volunteer counter-assistants are already working alongside the staff and are enjoying the experience. We have a significant data-base of volunteers, however, we would be pleased to welcome more volunteers to help our new local venture. (either enquire in the Library or contact [email protected] ). Over the next few months we hope to ask for help in developing activities within the library and organising both social and fundraising events. 2013 should be a Happy New Year for WCL.

Local Face: Julian Stevens
January 2013 www.wendover-news.co.uk 19
Julian Stevens was born in Aylesbury and spent the first five years of life in Walton Way, with his parents and two older brothers, Barry and Paul. At 11 months he contracted polio and doctors told his parents he would never walk. Luckily they were wrong, although polio did have some effects on him. Julian’s father was a pastry chef and he owned a restaurant and bakery in Aylesbury, the Market Square Restaurant, where both his parents worked. His mother’s father, Randolph Burgess, died in the first world war and his name is on the war memorial in the market square. His paternal grandfather came to Aylesbury from London and set up a building firm, with offices at The Red Lion in Kingsbury Square. They moved to Weston Turville when he was five, to an old house with a large garden, which Julian thought was wonderful. There were several sheds in the garden, some of which were unsafe, as he found out when he fell through the roof of one and broke his arm. They used to build carts with wood and pram wheels and race them down Halton Road, pulling into the wooded area at the bottom. Sometimes they would look behind to see a double-decker bus following them down the road : far less
traffic and far fewer health and safety rules in those days, and a lot more tolerance. J u l i a n a t t e n d e d Weston Turville village school. The head teacher Mr Lawton had been at the school for many years and had taught the parents of a lot of the children there, and Julian recalls that he called most of them by their parents’ names! From there he attended the John Colet. He enjoyed school, but confesses it was probably more social than academic. When Julian was twelve his mother died, which he says was a very difficult time for them all. Aged 15 he left school and had to decide on a career so became an apprentice hairdresser to George Reed in Aylesbury with a grand wage of £2.50 a week. The business was then sold to John Hart and Julian finished his apprenticeship with him. In his early 20’s he began working for Jose and Rafael in Wendover. They returned to live in Spain, and sold Julian the business. It was a big decision for him to make, because the year before
he had married and they were living in a bed-sit, sharing a kitchen and bathroom, saving for the deposit for a house. The savings were used for the salon, with his two brothers-in-law acting as guarantors to the bank. Julian and his wife did manage to buy a house later. They have since moved three times and have three grown up children.
The rest, as they say, is history. Julian has worked in Wendover ever since and says he has been very lucky with staff. Most of the girls who worked for him did so for a long time. Tracey and Shelley work part-time now, they started their apprenticeships there, have married, had children, and returned. Julian believes he is lucky to work in Wendover. He has many long-standing customers, some who have moved away come back just to have their hair cut! When he was recovering from surgery recently his loyal staff and customers kept everything going. Julian’s parting words were, “Well, that’s enough about me, are you going anywhere nice for your holiday this year?”

View from the Chair Congratulations to Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce for running a successful Late Night Shopping event on Wednesday 5 Dec and thanks to our celebrities Dr. Mike Loosemore, doctor to the Olympic Boxing Team and Eleanor Bell, sister of Pamela Relph, the Paralympic Rowing Gold Medallist, for turning on the Christmas Lights. A fitting end to a wonderful Olympic year. Now I would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year and successful 2013.
Robert Duggan, Chairman
Clerk and RFO We are pleased to inform everyone that Jill Bottomley, who has been our stalwart over the last year and a half plus, has been confirmed in the post of Clerk for Wendover Parish Council. We would like to offer her our gratitude and now look forward to a happy and constructive future. We have appointed Bridget Bradford (the Clerk to Winslow Town Council) to the post of RFO (Responsible Financial Officer), the post which has been so adeptly held by Councillor Bob Lewis who has seen us over an extremely difficult period since mid 2011. Again our grateful thanks.
Query We have received a query regarding what has been an increasing Precept in the years up to 2011/12 and the % of staffing costs. We are acutely aware of the situation and we are pleased there
was no increase in the Precept for 2012/13 and we are making every effort to keep the precept at its current level. The matter of efficiency and cost in the running of the Parish Office, the Clock Tower is one of those things which is continually being looked into. We are grateful for the interest and communication received and we always welcome constructive comment.
Quizmaster Hopefully all who came enjoyed the Quiz. We would like to thank everyone who helped out, but especially Alan Myers the Quizmaster who, once again, did a brilliant job and congratulations, at last, to Hale Valley Vineyard who have tried for some time to win the trophy!
The Clock Tower Project During the year of the Olympics/Paralympics Wendover Parish Council wanted to encourage its residents to keep fit and healthy by allowing the recreational areas to be used for fitness
classes. Looking forward to the New Year the Parish Council wishes to maintain this same policy. Since the Clock Tower is feeling its age and the bell tower is a bit creaky in its joints the Parish Council is appealing to the community to help support funds for the restoration works that are required. To this end one fitness instructor has pledged £120 towards the Clock Tower Restoration Fund which ensures not only are the residents in good shape, but the Clock Tower too! Olympic Games Makers shook buckets in the freezing cold at the Christmas Lights Switch On which raised another £60. A very delightful elderly lady came into the Clock Tower and anonymously donated £20 raising the current total to £496.
This iconic building is now 170 years old and in need of some major repair work. In particular, the wooden bell tower needs serious renovations, together will a full overhaul of the bell and its mechanisms. As well as raising funds to carry out the work the Parish Council also hopes to raise levels of interest and understanding of the Clock Tower’s h er i t a g e w i t h f u l l com m un i t y involvement.
Please register your support for this project to demonstrate the importance of this distinctive landmark and help to attract grants from funding bodies by signing our petition which can be found at the Clock Tower, Community Library and other places in Wendover.
