So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation:

everything old has passed away; see, everything has

become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17

As we begin a new year, Apostle Paul's words to the church in

Corinth remind us that we who have been baptized in Christ are new

creations: people reconciled to God through Christ called to

participate in God’s mission of reconciling all of creation to God.

This ministry of reconciliation has renewed life here at Trinity!

This past year we have been moving from a church concerned with

maintenance to a church focused on mission. This shift is reflected

through the excellent work of Trinity's paid staff and lay leaders.

And more life-giving reconciling work is envisioned for 2013 as

follows:

Worship: Next fall, I envision the New Traditions service will

become a weekly event. So we need new members to join this team

now so we can start preparing. Is God calling you to serve in this

area? Contact Kathy Baas, Keri Sherwood or myself to learn more.

Also, beginning in the summer, I envision a monthly mid-week

Taize service (follow this link to learn more: http://www.elca.org/

Growing-In-Faith/Worship/Learning-Center/FAQs/Taize-

Worship.aspx). Yearning for a more contemplative, prayerful worship

experience? Call me.

Community Building/Adult Discipleship: I envision creating a

small group ministry that consists of lay leaders facilitating small

group gatherings for friendship, support and faith development.

Caring relationships happen in small groups and faith is nurtured.

Interested in partnering with me or learning more?

Children, Youth and Family Ministry: This March, Mike Van

Laningham completes his training and becomes certified in youth

and family ministry. He will then be qualified to take on additional

responsibilities with youth so that I have time to develop the above

ministry goals. Thanks be to God!

Trinity Website: Sheri Villers has done an amazing job

maintaining our existing website. So many people ‘shop’ for churches

by visiting websites. Sheri and I envision upgrading the look and feel

of Trinity’s website in 2013 so that it provides the information people

seek as well as an on-line feel of what Trinity is all about.

Exciting times for Trinity! But we need everyone’s participation—

sharing your time and finances. As I write this, we have yet to receive (Continued on page 3)

Baptism

Adults who desire to be baptized, or those who want to have their child

baptized, are invited to contact the church office. In the case of Adult

Baptism, candidates are encouraged to worship and attend a Sunday morning Bible Study. Those

who want to have their child baptized are asked to schedule a Baptism Preparation session with

Pastor Tom prior to the baptism. P.T. looks forward to talking with you! Please speak with him if

you have questions.

Saturday Morning Study

Saturday, January 12th and 26th, 8:30-10:00am

Downstairs in the Great Hall

Prayer. Five hundred years ago Martin Luther, in How One Should Pray, for Master Peter the

Barber, said it is a good thing to let prayer be the first business of the morning and the last at

night. Henry French’s Book of Faith Lenten Journey, 40 days with the Lord’s Prayer states “in 14

short lines the Lord’s Prayer contains the heart and soul of Jesus’ teaching.” The Saturday Study

is going to spend some time with both of these resources as we look deeply into the Lord’s Prayer.

It is not necessary to attend every session. Come as you are able to enjoy morning coffee and

conversation. For additional information, contact Tammie at [email protected] or 654-

3256.

Sunday's Com'n

Each Wednesday morning at 8:30am, gather with Pastor Tom in the Gathering Space to

reflect on the scripture reading for the coming Sunday. No experience necessary. We read the

text and share how it makes us feel and the thoughts and questions it generates. It's all good!

Just Me and My Shadow

by Terri Lackey

It’s that time of year again. Time to make resolutions that I will ultimately break. Lose weight.

Eat fewer carbs. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Be nicer to people. Don’t gripe. Don’t hate. Don’t

honk.

I want to be a better person. I really do. But I’m in my mid 50s. Can I even change now? Is my

personality (and desire to consume junk candy and honk at slowpoke drivers) cemented into my core?

I think I might be a grouch. Recently, a co-worker labeled me as that (or something like it). And

even as a little kid, my family used to call me Aunt Co. That was my spinster, great-aunt who was

known for griping and grumbling. I asked my husband if I was grouchy, and he slowly nodded,

“Sometimes.”

In Sunday school (adult education) at church, we’re learning about our shadow selves, a Jungian

concept outlined in Richard Rohr’s new book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of

Life (Jossey-Bass).

“Your shadow is what you refuse to see about yourself, and what you do not want others to see,”

Rohr writes. “The more you have cultivated and protected a chosen persona, the more shadow work

you will need to do.”

He continues: “Be especially careful therefore of any idealized role or self-image, like that of

minister, mother, doctor, nice person, professor, moral believer, or president of this or that.”

If you live out of your shadow life, he says, you can’t recognize who you really are.

Maybe, since I believe I’m a grouch (and many others believe it too!) I am really a nice person.

Maybe I live out of my shadow and I’m trying to hide the good person I really am. (Giggle.) Maybe.

It’s something to think about as we begin a new year. Not just “What are my New Year’s

resolutions?” but “How do I live in a way that is true to who I really am?”

What shadow are you living under? How can you be more true to yourself?

Care for Creation

The Care for Creation team wishes our Trinity family a very happy new year. We

hope you had a most blessed Christmas and that some of our ideas helped you to

make your Christmas just a bit greener this year. Your response to the Christmas

light collection for recycling was outstanding! As of this writing we have not yet completed the

collection. But we do know that we had to empty the collection tub twice a week. And every

string of lights deposited in our collection tub was one string not thrown into a landfill. Thank

you. Look for another recycling option in February.

Flower and Bulletin Donations

Would you like the opportunity to honor a loved one or celebrate a loved one’s birthday or

anniversary? Please consider sponsoring a bulletin for $15 or donate flowers for the sanctuary

for $13 per bouquet. Your gifts of generosity help to enrich our worship experience. You can sign

up in the Gathering Space and place your monetary gift in the collection plate or leave it in the

office.

Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Choir

Start planning now to join the new TLCYC for middle school and high school students. We

are working on scheduling and will announce it as soon as it is finalized.

Please contact Kerri Sherwood, Minister of Music Ministries, if you are interested. Please

email her at [email protected].

GFS Fundraising

GFS (Gordon Foods Service) Fun Funds is excited to help Trinity with its fundraising needs.

This completely free program gives up to 10% of your GFS Marketplace purchase back to

Trinity. The rebate rate is determined on a quarterly basis by the total purchase level of all

members. Simply go to the link below, fill out the short form and go to GFS Marketplace and

Lines from the Library

It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to purchase new books for the library. We’d like to

expand our book collection with a new book donation drive in February. Watch for more

information in the February Tidings.

pledges from a number of households. I pray that as you read these exciting ministry goals you

will experience the Holy Spirit’s movement and renew your partnership with God in the

reconciling work God has begun through Jesus Christ. Please take a moment and make a

financial pledge; contact JoAnn at the church to learn how.

Thanks be to God for you and blessings for a healthy and faith-filled 2013!

Love,

Pastor Tom

Dear members of Trinity,

November was a pretty

good month; we had a lot of

giving to committees

(Youth/Learning) that

helped us get back on track

for the year. But as you

may know, we need major

roof repairs.

Just something to think

about—we are over

$14,000 behind in our

budgeted giving! We are in a good position with cash only because the committees are not

spending! Please remember, our expenses will increase a lot with the heating bills. Please make

sure to keep up with your Unified Giving and Debt Reduction please.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas season, remembering Jesus’ birthday.

Also, keep everyone in your prayers; they help!

Thanks,

Jim Lichtenheld

TRINITY TIDINGS

The deadline to receive information for the February 2013 issue:

Sunday, January 20th

Articles may be left in the church office or emailed to Sheri Villers at

[email protected].

The Social ministry and CUSH committee will

not meet in January since there are no pressing

agenda items.

Please remember CANS FOR CUSH on

January 6th. Please drop off any bagged

aluminum cans in the back hallway of the church

on the first Sunday of each month. The recycling

money will benefit CUSH.

Thank you for your support of CUSH and

Trinity’s Social Ministry programs. Congregation

members adopted the volunteers at the Urban

Outreach Center and their girls group for

Christmas. We continue to serve at the Shalom

Center on the fourth Friday of each month.

CUSH continues important

advocacy work through their various

task forces. They are hosting an

immigration help session on January 12th at St.

Mark’s. They will help people with their

applications to stay in the United States legally.

CUSH is also working with the city to extend the

city bus service on Saturdays. Many people

depend on this service to get to jobs and do their

errands. And finally, CUSH continues to work on

the statewide initiative to use funding currently

going toward incarceration on treatment

programs for non-violent offenders.
