Happy New Year!A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

I would fi rst like to wish every Bram-bleton resident a happy and prosper-ous New Year. I hope that the holi-days were good to everyone and that the New Year will be even better.

The start of a New Year is typically a time to look forward and set goals for the coming year. The 2013 goal setting process for the Association began with the adoption of the an-nual budget and strategic plan earlier in 2012. These documents outline some of the 2013 goals that the BCA Board and staff plan to work towards and achieve; and set the assessments for this year.

The 2013 Budget plans for continued and rapid growth for the community which includes a new pool and com-munity building; additional trails, ex-ercise stations, tot lots and amenities; new neighborhoods and landscap-ing to maintain; and additional staff to assist with the operation and man-agement of the growing community. The Association plans to improve and enhance its operations and services by placing additional focus on spe-cifi c tasks or projects outlined in the BCA Strategic Plan. The areas of focus include Community Administration and Services; Covenants; Community Lifestyles; and Operations & Environ-ment. Within those strategic areas of

focus the Association plans to accom-plish the following:

Community Administration &

Services

• Defi ne and develop customer service procedures and training program specifi c to Brambleton.

• Continue to refi ne and improve upon Association communica-tion to its residents.

• Develop and implement a new resident orientation program.

• Develop a fi rm Capital Improve-ment Plan for the Association.

• Continued outreach to local gov-ernmental offi cials, authorities and associations in a manner that will enhance the quality of life for residents in Brambleton.

• Improve communication be-tween NVT, Verizon and the As-sociation by scheduling quarterly information exchange meetings.

Covenants

• Establish and implement an in-spection program for completed exterior modifi cations.

• Formally develop a two-year master plan for comprehensive and recurring lot inspections.

that can occur to personal property.

Brambleton Community Associa-

tion: The Brambleton Community Association (BCA) is committed to prompt snow and ice management on the common areas and common drives in sections of the community that have been fi nal paved and are no longer under construction. The Association’s goal is to have all its streets c hours af-ter the snow stops falling.

BCA Sidewalks & Trails – Once the BCA streets are cleared, the Association will focus its attention towards the side-walks and trails. BCA will fi rst clear its sidewalks leading to the schools. Then the sidewalks and trails in the rest of the community will be cleared. The goal is to clear all sidewalks and trails during the day following the snow fall, if not sooner.

Developer: The Brambleton Group or Developer will perform snow and ice management on all future VDOT streets that have been constructed but not yet accepted by the state, and on all common drives that have not been fi nal paved and accepted by BCA.

VDOT: Virginia Department of Trans-portation will perform snow and ice management on public streets (those that have been topped with the fi -nal coat of asphalt and released from bond). These streets typically have a

Numerous organizations are respon-sible for winter storm clean up, com-monly referred to as “snow removal”, within Brambleton. Below is a general reference guide for residents to de-termine who is responsible for doing what during and after a winter storm.

Homeowners: Townhome and Single-Family homeowners are responsible for shoveling snow on their driveway and the sidewalks on and adjacent to their property. This includes the VDOT sidewalk or common area sidewalk in front of your property. Residents should not throw or pile snow in the street, as this will create additional haz-ards and delays in street clearing.

Once the sidewalk has been cleared of snow, the use of non-corrosive, en-vironmental-friendly material, such as sand, should be applied for traction purposes. Do not apply salt to con-crete sidewalks and driveways aprons. The salt can damage the concrete or shorten the useful life of the concrete. Residents are responsible for damage to sidewalks as a result of salt applica-tions.

Brambleton residents can assist the snowplow operators by parking in driveways or designated parking spac-es during snowstorms. This practice will increase the amount of asphalt plowed, increase the effi ciency of the operator and reduce possible damage

Residences and Residences II Con-

dominiums: There are several orga-nizations responsible for the snow removal throughout the Residences. Unit owners are responsible for clear-ing the driveways that serve their unit. The condominium association is responsible for clearing all sidewalks serving each building. The Developer is responsible for clearing and treating the common streets throughout the Residences.

Summerfi eld Condominiums: The Summerfi eld Condominium Asso-ciation is responsible for clearing and treating all common hard surfaces on the property.

What is this all about? You have probably heard of a traditional progressive or roving dinner where a different course is served in each home and the guests move together from one house to another. We are going to mix it up a bit... This year, we will do 3 rounds of hors d'oeuvres (tapas) with the menu & theme to be determined by each host and co-host. Each course is meant to be simple and will have between six and eight couples per home. You will not be with the same couples all evening so it is a great way to meet other people in Brambleton. Everyone will come together in the

Community Center (on Regal Wood Drive) for the final dessert course.

The tentative schedule for the evening is as follows:

6:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. ~ Course #1 ~ Tapas, round 1

7:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. ~ Course #2 ~ Tapas, round 2

8:00 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. ~ Course #3 ~ Tapas, round 3

9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ~ Course #4 ~ Dessert

We need a firm commitment from all couples who wish to attend before beginning assignments, so line up your babysitters now! Sign up at: http://tinyurl.com/ctjpyfo or email [email protected] with any questions.

partment, along with Santa, toured the neighborhood while collecting toys, clothes and canned goods for the Loudoun Holiday Coalition. As

Even though we didn’t experience much of a Winter Wonderland (50-60 degree weather for most of Decem-ber!), the holidays here in Bramble-ton are always such a special time of year for our communi-ty. We began to see (and hear) signs of the winter solstice and winter holidays around Bram-bleton as early as mid-Novem-ber this year, when many of our neighbors celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. In December we observed anoth-er Festival of Lights, also known as the Jewish holiday, Hanuk-kah. And since no holiday sea-son would be complete without Santa, we were fortunate enough to have multiple Santa sightings in the neighborhood during the month of December!

On Sunday, December 2nd, the Arc-ola-Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire De-

residents waiting at each of the col-lection stops throughout the neigh-borhood. Some stops had as many as 100 residents and the generosity of our community was able to fi ll two 16-passenger vans full of toys and food for underprivileged families in Loudoun, proving our residents’ con-sideration and commitment to the season of giving to be overwhelming.

Due to the growth of the community over the past few years the Holiday Open House that has traditionally been held at the Community Center was moved to the Town Center in or-der to accommodate a larger crowd this year. This year our Brambleton Community Association’s Activities Committee joined forces with the Brambleton Group’s Marketing Team to put on what was a fantastic Holiday Open House, coupled with the Tree and Menorah Lighting Event. The event was held at the Town Center on

Saturday, December 8th, where hun-dreds of people stopped by to help ring in the holidays in Brambleton.

In the Welcome Center, the face paint-ers and balloon artists drew in a big crowd and did not disappoint. Chil-dren and parents alike were thrilled with the elaborate balloon and paint-ing creations they received. Children also enjoyed cookie decorating pro-vided by Chesterbrook Academy, and they marveled at Stretch, Santa’s tall-est Elf, who made a special trip down from the North Pole just to help us celebrate this special event.

The biggest crowd pleaser and lon-gest wait was the line to see the man in the red suit, though many will re-port that Santa was well worth the wait. This year we attempted to im-plement a reservation system to help expedite some folks through the line,

and we apologize for any signifi cant wait times that you experienced. We were told by the jolly old man himself that “You can-not rush Santa,” and thus, we did not. He is the real deal folks, and our Santa is worth the wait! H owe ve r it is appar-ent that some modi-fi cations to this event are essential in order to accommodate our growing community. The visit from Santa always draws such a large crowd that we may have

to consider a reservation only system, a 2nd visit or another possibility in or-der to serve a community of our size

in future years.

Finally as the year came to a close here in

Brambleton, some celebrated a joy-

ous Kwanzaa, and the Ringing in Hope Walk, Run & Fun event was held on New Year’s Eve.

We truly hope you had a joyful

holiday season. We are already looking

forward to the holiday cheer and festivities that

2013 will bring and look forward to celebrating them with you again!

Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Offi ce would like to remind all motorists that winter driving can be hazardous, especially in our area where we nor-mally receive a mixture of ice, freez-ing rain and snow. Please see some important driving safety tips below:

Make sure your vehicles are equipped with a well-stocked winter driving kit. A winter driving kit should include the following items:

• Bag of sand or salt (or kitty litter)

• Traction mats

• Snow shovel

• Snow brush

• Ice scraper

• Booster cables

• Warning devices such as fl ares or emergency lights

• Fuel line de-icer (methanol, also called methyl alcohol or methyl hydrate)

• Extra windshield wiper fl uid ap-propriate for sub-freezing tem-peratures

• Roll of paper towels

• Flashlight and a portable fl ashing light (and extra batteries)

• Blanket

• Extra clothing, including hat and wind-proof pants, and warm footwear

• First aid kit

• Snack bars or other “emergency” food and water

• Matches and emergency candles. Only use these with a window opened to prevent build-up of

carbon monoxide.

• Road maps

• “Call Police” or other help signs or brightly colored banners.

The Loudoun Sheriff ’s Offi ce reminds motorists to stay safe in the winter by also following these driving safety tips:

• Always keep the gas tank topped off . When it gets to half, fi ll it up.

• Do not travel unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to make the trip, ensure someone is aware of your route of travel.

• Carry a cell phone.

• Always buckle-up. Your seat belt can be the best protection against drivers who are tense and in a hur-ry because of weather conditions.

• Clear snow and ice from all win-dows and lights – even the hood and roof – before driving.

• Pay attention. Don’t try to out-drive the conditions. Remember the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

• Leave plenty of room for stopping.

• Leave room for maintenance ve-hicles and plows – stay back a safe stopping distance and don’t pass on the right.

• Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time to stop in adverse conditions.

• Watch for slippery bridges, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridges will ice up sooner than the adjacent pave-ment.

• Do not use cruise control in wintry

conditions. Even roads that ap-pear clear can have sudden slip-pery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your ve-hicle.

• Don’t get overconfi dent in your 4×4 vehicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4×4 ve-hicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Your 4×4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle.

• Do not pump anti-lock brakes. If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump brakes in attempting to stop. The right way is to “stomp and steer!”

• Look farther ahead in traffi c than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you quicker to problems and give you a split-second extra time to react safely.

• Remember that trucks are heavi-er than cars. Trucks take longer to safely respond and come to a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them.

• Go Slow!

Know the current road conditions: http://511virginia.org/Default.aspx; for statewide highway information 24-hours-a-day, call the Highway Helpline at 1-800-367-ROAD or check local traffi c incident information at www.loudoun.gov/traffi c (www.lou-doun.gov/mobiletraffi c via your web browsing cell phone).

Pawsitively Brambleton Dog

Calendar a Success!

The fi rst “Pawsitively Brambleton” dog calendar has been a hit! There’s no denying our nation’s love of dogs extends throughout the homes in Brambleton.

After fi rst launching the dog photo contest on our Facebook page last July, Brambletonians proudly sub-mitted their canine kids’ photos. Brambleton’s Marketing team then had the arduous (yet FUN) task of pouring over countless doggone cute photos – from those with sad puppy-dog eyes to costumed pets in clever poses – to narrow the fi eld down to 25 fi nalists. and raffl es at community events, while eight winners were chosen from drawings at our builders’ model homes and Welcome Center.

Each winner received a Trek fi tness bike. The weekly winners from Facebook and community events in-cluded Dennis Kellen, Srinivasa Bollu, Neal McNerney, Istiaq Ahmed, Sara Pellegrini, Avinash Dwivedi, Sarah Jane Forbes, Terry McCaff ery, Mehul Unadkat and Pete House. The lucky winners from the model homes and Welcome Center included: Reddy Pa-thepuram, Josh Wood, Steve Ramos, Monica Fleming, Brandon Gauthier, Jayson Jean, Ganesh Rajagopal and Jeff Gaull.

Brambleton’s Bicycle Outfi tters opened in late October 2012 and is located at 22895 Brambleton Plaza, across from the Sport & Health Club. They can be reached at 703-327-3222.

THANK YOU for your generous dona-tions to FOHA and local Girl Scout Brownie Troop 5405 who also helped us collect for FOHA at the commu-nity's annual Holiday Open House in December by selling homemade dog treats and collecting donations from the horse-drawn carriage rides. Calendars are still available in the Welcome Center, so stop by and pick up a copy today.

Spirit of Giving Bike Contest

The Brambleton Group got in the holiday spirit by giving away 18 new bikes from the newly opened Bicycle Outfi tters in the Brambleton Town Center from mid November through December 21st. Ten winners were selected from Facebook contests

over the holidays. He was part of a special series of area health experts providing tips for how to live health-ier.

Dr. Rahim spoke about the impor-tance of having regular dental exams was well as the link between oral health and overall health. Research-ers have found that your oral health may aff ect, be aff ected by or contrib-ute to various diseases and condi-tions, including heart disease, pre-mature birth and low birth weight, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease.

To protect your oral health, Dr. Rahim encourages everyone to practice good oral hygiene every day -- this includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day, fl ossing daily, replac-ing your toothbrush every three to four months and scheduling regular dental checkups.

Dr. Rahim says it is also important to watch for signs and symptoms of oral disease and contact your dentist as soon as a problem arises. Remem-ber, taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.

The award-winning master planned commu-nity of Brambleton is located in the eastern side of scenic, historic Loudoun County, near Ashburn, Vir-ginia. The growing streetscapes of Brambleton are de-signed on approximately 2,500 acres of gently rolling meadows, interspersed with ponds and woodlands. Zoned for over 8,000 residential units by comple-tion, it presently holds about 1/3 of its future projection, with more than 3,400 families residing in the development. With fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) technology at the core of its development, every home in Bramb-leton receives Verizon FiOS video and data services, which are included in the community association’s monthly dues. These modern conveniences allow the homes in Brambleton to grow with technology, while residents still enjoy the flavor of small-town community. Conceived in 1999 after Brambleton Group ac-quired the property, and developed by Soave Enter-prises, Brambleton opened for sales in the fall of 2001. Today, Brambleton offers homebuyers a choice of detached and attached single-family units in its two newest neighborhoods, The Overlook and Emer-ald Ridge. These neighborhoods include a selected mix of home builders known for innovation and design quality: Beazer Homes, Camberley Homes, Miller & Smith, Pulte Homes, Van Metre Homes and Winchester Homes. The variety of architectural styles creates char-acter and dimension in the neighborhood, where high

standards protect property values and enhance the aesthetics of the neighborhood. Brambleton’s HOA is run by Armstrong Management Services, re-sponsible for the administration of the Association. Young families are drawn to Brambleton, many of them working at employment centers along the Dulles Tech Corridor. The Dulles Greenway is just 3.5 miles away, and the future Metrorail Silver Line sta-tion will be close. Global travelers are grateful Washing-ton Dulles International Airport is just minutes away. Stephanie Lee, who has worked for the Bramble-ton Group for 10 years and resided in Brambleton for the past six, loves the location. “My husband is a contractor with multiple work locations, so easy access to the Dulles Toll Road is ideal,” she said. “At the beginning, we had a hard time finding something we could afford, but we were patient, and it’s been worth it. The quality of the commu-nity is very strong, and you can’t beat the technology!” Referring to the U.S. News & World Re-port statistic, reported by this paper, she point-ed out that 50% of the world’s Internet traffic goes through Loudoun County. Lee agreed that Bramble-ton is ready. “The tech boom never left; it’s still here and growing. Many large headquarters are comingto Loudoun. Brambleton sees the future.”

While a relatively new addition to the Loudoun landscape, Brambleton continues to grow with new sections currently under construction.

Part of the future is already here. In 2006, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute opened the 689-acre Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, a world-class biomedical research center, attracting outstanding scien-tists from diverse disciplines using emerging, innovative technologies to pursue biology’s most challenging prob-lems. The interdisciplinary focus at Janelia includes spe-cialist conferences each spring and fall, as well as a series of public lectures for a non-specialist audience called “Dia-logues of Discovery.” The location of this facility is exciting for nearby Brambletonians who prize ongoing education. For parents who value educatial opportunities for their children, Loudoun County Public Schools of-fer educational programs that rank with the best in Vir-ginia and in the nation, providing well-run programs for Gifted Students, Vocational and Alternative Educa-tion, as well as Special Education. Three public schools are located in Brambleton: two elementary schools, Legacy Elementary and Creighton’s Corner Elemen-tary (with an additional elementary site zoned for thefuture); and Briar Woods High School. Middle school stu-dents attend Stone Hill Middle School in nearby Ashburn. Brambleton’s HOA is quite active and engaged with fun community events throughout the year. In the summer, residents enjoy concerts in the Town Cent-er, pool parties, neighborhood campouts, and a Red, White & BRAM Fest with fireworks. Other seasonalcelebrations like Fall Fest, holiday open houses, casino nights, and egg hunts foster camaraderie among families. The FTTP technology at Brambleton allows residents to stay abreast of HOA-sponsored eventsthrough a private, password-protected communty In-tranet, a popular tool with tech-savvy residents who can connect with one another through message boards, classifieds, calendars of events, communitygroups, monthly newsletters, and more. In addition to the unique technology package with Verizon, Brambleton residents also enjoy the Brambleton Community Center, and a wide variety of other amenities. Brambleton sports two outdoor swimming pools, with more planned; tennis courts; basketball and multi-purpose courts; soccer, football, softball and baseball fields; and play areas. A network of trails runs throughout the communi-ty, connecting neighbors with play areas and open space.

Adjacent to the Brambleton communty is the beautiful 18-hole Brambleton Regional Golf Course, an independent entity, not part of the Brambleton Group and Community Association. Adjacent to Legacy Park and in walking dis-tance from the neighborhoods, is the popular and con-venient Brambleton Town Center. The Town Center is the shopping center and social/entertainment hub forthe community. Harris Teeter Supermarket, Capital One Bank and Regal Fox Theatres anchor a variety of spe-cialty retail stores and restaurants. The new Sport & Health facility, opened in summer 2010, has an indoor/outdoor pool and state-of-the-art gym equipment. As an incentive for new homebuyers in The Overlook and Emerald Ridge neighborhoods at Brambleton, a free one-year membership to the new club is part of the package! Brambleton may have been born at the begin-ning of the 21st century, but the community envisioned by its developer, Anthony Soave, the President and ChiefExecutive Officer of Soave Enterprises, extends far into the future. Soave places no limits on the potential of his company or his people, so it is not surprising that theneighborhood of Brambleton he conceived has a similar outlook. Blending quality of life in histor-ic Loudoun with innovative technical and educa-tional advances for its residents, the future is now, and it lives with unlimited potential at Brambleton.

Brambleton Town Center continues to grow and has added several restaurants and boutique shops in recent years. Fox Cinemas provides a central entertainment resource for the Brambleton community.

The annual Brambleton Ribbon Run brings together an estimated 2,000 runners and walkers from the Brambleton community and beyond, united in an effort to fight breast cancer.

trash bins or bringing baked goods to the bus driver.

It’s a simple plan for 25 days of serv-ing, giving, and helping others. A fun way to experience the true MAGIC and JOY Christmas fi rst-hand.

Beyond the daily Advent calendar plan, many families spread the "Gift of Kindness" in classrooms and any-where they visited. Jill Nolton helped with her son's 1st grade holiday party where one of the activities was mak-ing holiday cards for Leesburg nurs-

This holiday season, many families in Brambleton took part in a movement to give back big. For one resident, the tradition began last year during Advent for her own family, which brought a lot more meaning to their holidays.

Creating a Facebook group in an ef-fort to share this tradition with friends and family this year, the movement has since infl uenced many and has impacted lives within the community and beyond.

"Gifts of Kindness" is a project to drive home the compassion connection for our kids in a variety of ways, in the hope that something will “stick”. - Ashley C.

It’s been said that it takes 21 days to form a habit… so Advent is perfect. The Advent calendar is a great ves-sel to help families keep track of the "Gift of Kindness" each day. Each gift can vary from day to day. Some days would include volunteering at a local food bank or sorting holidays gifts for those in need. Other days would have you taking in your neighbors'

ing home residents. "The kids were all wild about it! It was so much fun, and there was so much creativity", said Nolton.

Other opportunities kids have en-joyed this season were collecting canned foods door to door, deliver-ing holiday cheer to a local nursing home, sorting holidays gifts for those in need, writing letters to help a girl achieve her "Make A Wish" dream, taping quarters to a vending ma-chine, and so much more.

The Facebook group has quickly grown to over 230 in the past few months, with people sharing many experiences and posting personal stories and photos.

If you are looking to inspire your fam-ily, join the group and read about all the amazing opportunities to give back. The hope is for this group to grow beyond the holidays and to continue for years to come.

Search "Gifts of Kindess... pass it on!" on Facebook.

Long and Foster Ashburn…excited to be your community real estate partner

In conjunction with our preferred Lender, Prosperity Mortgage, we will be conducting a “HOMEBUYER WORKSHOP” from 10 to 12 on January 12th. It will be held in the Long and Foster Ashburn Office located at 43490 Yukon Drive, Ashburn, VA (Adjacent to the Ashburn Home Depot and

behind Giant Food.) The seminar is at no cost to you. All we ask is that you bring in a

donation for the BACK PACK BUDDIES program. Last school year, 1 in 6 Loudoun County school children qualified for free or reduced-price school lunches. What happens to these children when they go home for the weekend?

BACK PACK BUDDIES is a program created by Feeding America to provide weekend meals to local school children in need. Each week, the children are provided a grocery bag filled with 6 meals and 2 snacks plus juice and shelf milk to take home. Contact Dan Freire at 703-726-3432 to sign up for the workshop or for a list of preferred donation items.
