Vehicle license fees would triple under measure planned by Sen. Ted Lieu (D)

Touted as a test of the new Democratic supermajority in Sacramento, South Bay state Senator Ted Lieu, Democrat, plans to introduce a measure to triple vehicle license fees. The constitutional amendment would restore the 2 percent vehicle license fee slashed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger after he won office partly on that pledge. The 1.35 percent transportation system user fee increase would generate an estimated $3.5 billion to $4 billion annually for roads and public transit in yet-to-be-decided proportions, Lieu said. Buoyed by the Democratic supermajority achieved just last week, Lieu, D-Redondo Beach, plans to introduce the legislation in either December or January. He envisions the Legislature will approve the amendment and place it before voters Nov. 2014.

January

In the January issue I wrote one of my very few editorials. The theme was one of encouraging all of us to step up our level of involvement and participation in our club and our hobby. At the end of the article, I asked for feedback, in hopes of possibly generating “letters to the editor” types of input, since I think having that kind of dialogue as a part of this newsletter would be a nice addition. Sadly, that never happened. In the Modesto Happenings column, it was reported that in 2011 that chapter was able to collect over $14,000 from their various shows, and were able to donate that money to several worthy charities. That’s pretty darned impressive, if you ask me.

February

There wasn’t much happening in February of 2012. The big event for me was FINALLY getting my truck into the shop to be painted. There was also a report on the progress past member Mike Hardy was making on his F-6 project (which, by the way, hasn’t been finished yet, but does have a lot more done to it).

March

The March issue was the first one to have an article from the newly formed Port City Chapter. We also got to see a copy of the painting of Wayne King’s (Modesto Chapter) 56 Victoria that was used on a Hallmark greeting card. Chris Souza, (also with Modesto Chapter) debuted his 66 F-100 he purchased to replace the 54 he’d sold and shipped overseas.

April

The Annual Artichoke Run that East Bay Chapter puts on each March was featured in the April issue. While this is one of the smaller events, in terms of number of participants, it is certainly one of the more enjoyable outings we are able to attend each year. I also used this issue to show painter extraordinaire, Ricky Villa (Silicon Valley Chapter) working on putting my truck back together after the great paint job he put on it.

May

There were two major events reported on in the May issue. First, Delta Chapter’s Annual Easter Run was once again a ‘must attend’ run. This is an event that always has a large number of vehicles in attendance. For many, this is the beginning of the “car show” season, and they bring their rides out of winter hibernation at this event. There was also coverage of Silicon Valley Chapter’s Annual Silicon Valley Cruise. Out of necessity, this run usually sees only 35 to 50 entries. Because it’s a poker run, any more than that and it becomes almost impossible to keep things under control. Once again, though, this was a very special day of cruising. There were some great stops along the way, great prizes for the poker hands, as well as tons of raffle prizes. Then, of course there was the catered Mexican meal at the last stop, Domenico Winery. The May issue also was where the latest edition of the club jackets and hats were offered up for sale in the Port City Chit Chat column.

June

By the June issue, the run season was in full swing. East Bay Banter, Modesto Happenings, and Port City Chit Chat all talked about the myriad events their chapters had attended, but no one reported them as thoroughly as the Port City Chapter. That column ran for 6 pages (Imagine all the great information we would get to review if each chapter would follow their lead).

July

Once again, the mid-summer edition (July) highlighted a whole bunch of the events members from the 7 different chapters of this great club had attended. It also noted the change in the format of the meeting schedule that the Silicon Valley Chapter was adopting. It was a simple change from two meetings a month to one meeting and one “Activity Night”. To date, the change has proven to be great idea. The activities have ranged, so far, from getting together at a members home for some great food and social time, to attending local “cruise nights”, to simply showing up at different restaurants for dinner. There were also some pictures of Gary Bohn’s 56 Big Window being prepped for paint by Ricky Villa (both members are from the Silicon Valley Chapter). The big news that month was the inaugural “Cruisin’ The Grove” put on by the Port City & San Joaquin Chapters. This was a great run, with a good variety of entries. Port City Chapter, who did the lions share of the work should be congratulated for their run, especially being a brand new chapter with so few members. Great job PCC!!

Silicon Valley Activity Night 1st Annual 'Cruisin' the Grove (Port City Chapter) East Bay & Livermore at Alameda County Fair

Modesto's Back to Grafitti is always a huge hit. Wings & Wheels @ Kingdon Raceway Gary Bohn’s (Silicon Valley Chapter) big (Port City Chapter) window getting prepped for paint.

August

Once again, August highlighted the numerous events we all attended during the warm summer months. Silicon Valley Chapter showed up at the Saratoga Days show, where the main attraction seemed to be the million dollar-plus Bugatti that was on display. As always, Modesto’s 22nd Annual Summer Bash was a huge success, with the weather even cooperating (as much as it can in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley). East Bay reported on their participation in a couple of the holiday parades (Fremont and Livermore). Modesto garnered some attention with their trucks at a car show in Escalon. Port City Chit Chat listed all the cruise nights and car shows they had been attending to keep themselves on the go. Of course, with August being the time for the 42nd Annual F-100 Run, there was a last minute plug for that event as well. With the change of location to Morro Bay, there were a number of questions regarding whether or not it would be well attended (the pre-registration at the time of publication of the August issue was a little ambiguous, so it was hard to gauge).

Page 5: January 2013

September

Naturally, the September issue was pretty well dominated by coverage of the 42nd Annual North-South Ford F-100 Run. Once again, the host clubs, your F-100 Elite of Northern California and Pickups Limited of Southern California, put together a fantastic three days of trucks, friends, special activities, and more. For the first time, the event was held in Morro Bay, California, and judging by the comments of the participants the new location was a big hit. The newsletter did have other information reported in it on other activities, but North-South was the main focus.

October

With the run season winding down, our clubs Anniversary Run was the highlight of the October issue. Held each year in September, this years edition marked our 43rd year of continuous fun and friendships around the best trucks there are. As happens at each year’s run, individual milestones by members are recognized. Pins recognizing years of membership, at five year intervals, are given, and special awards for inductees into Lifetime Membership are given. New Lifetime members were Earl & Judy Pecka (San Joaquin Chapter), and Sydney Crosswhite (Livermore Chapter). Also, a plaque recognizing 35 years of membership was awarded to Wally & Judy Wallace (East Bay Chapter). Other events noted in this issue were the Return To Kingdon, hosted by the Port City Chapter, The Eric Wicka Memorial Car Show hosted by the Modesto Chapter, as well as several runs attended by various members.

Page 7: January 2013

7

November

The November issue was looking pretty barren. While the Pumpkin Run was at the end of October, and was well attended, it seems everyone must have eaten too much of the great food, because no one had the energy to send in any photos or a story about the run. Some pictures were received in time for the December issue though, and I’ll put a couple in here simply so they’ll tie in with the appropriate issue. East Bay reported that some of their members attended the Colusa Casino Car Show, and had a good time. Port City helped direct traffic at the end of the year car show at the A&W. The largest article in this month’s issue was a report on the quarterly E-Board meeting.

December

There was a meeting in Morro Bay of the North-South Run committee, and the December issue started off with a pretty in-depth accounting of what took place. East Bay Chapter re-counted the memories they made in a couple of Christmas Light parades, as well as expressed their appreciation to those that contributed to the success of the Car Show For Vets. Modesto Chapter reported on their chapter get together held in November at the home of Ken & Ruth Stone. Tom Tomberlin (Modesto Chapter) has been putting some finishing touches on his very nice F-1. Port City Chapter stumbled upon a car show in the Apple Hill area while on their annual trek to the area to try out the many apple treats available.

All in all, I think 2012 was a pretty good year. There seems to be no shortage of car and truck related events to satisfy even the most discriminating enthusiast. Our club is still growing, albeit slowly. But after 43+ years, that’s pretty darn good. The future is still anyone’s guess as to where we’ll be as a nation, but the prognosis for the F-100 hobby is bright. I hope 2013 brings all of you joy and happiness. Stay safe, and get out there and enjoy driving your trucks. See you next year!! ********************************************************************************** “Lettin’ the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in”…………………………………………Annoymous

TTRRIIVVIIAA Last month’s question: Staying with movie lines, from whence cometh “Merry Christmas, and May God bless us everyone”?

Answer: A Christmas Carol (Once again Susan Davis (Modesto) was the only one to respond. However, she missed it <for the first time> by one word. Her answer was “A Christmas Story”.)

This month’s question: Before he was Eddie’s Father, Bill Bixby had a very strange uncle on what show?

Modesto Happenings By: Bob Hansen

December in Modesto gives us the opportunity to donate the rest of our year’s earnings on the charities that we support each year.

We were happy to come together as a club on December 9th at the Vintage Faire Mall to pick names from the Soroptomist Christmas Tree and make Christmas a happier time for 42 children in the County. This has become a regular event for us. We started out 19 years ago buying for one child, and have grown to over 40 these last few years. We set a generous budget

per child, and many members put in a little more. Word has spread in the community about our annual gifts to the Soroptomists and we were invited to speak on the radio (Sunny 102.3) about our Club and this event. The Modesto Bee also sent a reporter take pictures and interview us at the Tree on December 9th for a nice article that appeared in the Bee a few days later.

We had 32 Club members attending this event including John and Linda Walsh, Bob and Susan Hansen, Dusty and Debbie Johnson with Jerilynn and Mackenzie, Tom and Jackie Tomberlin, John and Elaine Van Vliet and family, Chris Souza, Ken and Ruth Stone, Paul King, Wayne King, Jeff Davis and Susie, Leanne Robinson, Mike and Jennifer Wika, Ralph and Sherrel Haverson with Granny, Bill and Ieko Click, Carl and Linda Piercefield, and Jennifer Stanford.

Year End Wrap-Up

This year our Club member attended many, many shows, and we put on 3, Back to Graffiti at the Fruit Yard in June, Summer Bash in July, and The Wika Memorial Car Show in September. The proceeds from those shows were donated to the following charities:

$3,200 to the Soroptomist Christmas Tree (plus member contributions) $3,000 to Community Hospice $5,000 to The Shriners for the Children’s Hospital $2,400 to the Marfan Foundation

All in all, it was another successful year – thanks to all our members in all the Chapters for their continuing support.

Who’s Working on What

We have already started putting together flyers for 2013. If you go to the swap meet in Turlock in January, you will find a few members passing out flyers for Back to Graffiti!

***************************************************************************************** A six year old child run up and down the super-market aisles shouting frantically, “Julie, Julie!.” Finally reunited with his mother, he was chided by her, “You shouldn’t call me ‘Julie’, I am your mother.” “I know,” said the child, “but the store is full of mothers.”

Another year has come and gone. It has been a great year for Port City. We have stayed small but we were strong in numbers. We did more together than we had done in all the years past. We had to do one more thing before the year ended and we did not let a little rain spoil it. We decided to go to Columbia State Park to walk around the great town and have lunch. We had a two couples from San Joaquin Chapter join us (Ralph & Tammy Krause and Mike & Stacey Pecka). The weather only presented us with a small drizzle here and there so it did not dampen our spirits. We had a great lunch in one of the cafes and the waitress was nice enough to take our picture (see picture). Howard asked if she knew how to use a camera phone even though at her age she would. But as she was dressed in period costume he knew they did not have cameras in those days. You have know Howard’s sense of humor. HA HA.

Page 10: January 2013

10

After walking around some people were able to get some great buys on some really unique items. Art picked up a huge candy cane for his grandson. I am not sure if he could get the whole thing in his mouth it was so big around. It was also over 12 inches long. I would have loved to see his grandson’s face when he got that huge candy cane. We decided to caravan over to check out Jamestown as we still had daylight left. I myself had never been to old town Jamestown so it was going to be a treat. We walked around some great antique shops and there was a great craft fair that was going on to raise money for something I cannot remember at this time. All and all it was a great day. We have decided to do it again next year. We would love to have anybody join us in on the fun. We hope that everyone had a great Christmas and Santa brought you what you wanted. We will see everyone in 2013 and our hope and prayers are with everyone.

Makes 12 mini monkey bread

1 1/2 pounds prepared pizza dough OR 1 batch dough (below) 8 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup mixed dried fruit, such a mix of raisins, currants, and cranberries 2 small or 1 large apple, about 1/2 pound 1 lemon, zested 2/3 cup dark brown sugar Flour, for dusting the dough For the glaze: 1 tablespoon cream or milk 2 teaspoons honey Juice of 1 lemon, about 3 tablespoons 3/4 to 1 cup powdered sugar Lightly mist a large piece of parchment or baking sheet with baking spray. Lay the dough out on it and pat into a roughly 2-inch-thick rectangle. Use a knife or bench scraper to cut it into 4 roughly equal pieces. Cut each of these into 12 lumps, for a total of about 48 dough lumps about the size of your thumb. Sprinkle flour over top of the dough pieces, cover with towel, and set aside while you prepare the monkey bread filling. Prepare a 12-cup muffin pan by lightly greasing the wells or lining with paper muffin cups. To make the filling, melt the butter in a saucepan or the microwave. Stir in the vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and salt and set aside to cool completely. Roughly chop the dried fruit and place in a large bowl. Peel and core the apples, and grate them into the bowl with the dried fruit. Stir in the lemon zest as well as the brown sugar. Sprinkle the dough pieces again lightly with flour, to help keep them from sticking to each other, then toss them with the dried fruit, apples, and brown sugar. Pour the completely cooled melted butter into the bowl and stir to coat the pieces of dough. Quickly scoop up handfuls of the dough and fruit mixture and place them in muffin cups (about 4 pieces to each cup). If there is any leftover butter in the bowl, pour this evenly over the monkey breads. At this point the monkey breads can be covered lightly and refrigerated overnight. When ready to bake, take out of the fridge and let them rise for 1 hour before baking. Set aside in a warm place to rise for 1 hour. Heat the oven to 400°F and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until browned on top and the insides register about 190°F on an instant read thermometer. While they are baking, make the glaze. Warm the cream and honey in the microwave or in a small saucepan until the honey is dissolved. Whisk together with the lemon juice and powdered sugar until it forms a thick, creamy glaze. Remove the monkey breads from the oven and drizzle the glaze over the tops. Serve warm.

Monkey Bread Dough

Makes 1 1/2 pounds of dough, enough for one batch of Monkey Bread 2 teaspoons instant yeast 3 1/2 cups all-purpose or bread flour 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons olive or canola oil 1 1/4 cup cold or lukewarm water Mix the yeast with the flour and salt in a large bowl. Slowly mix in the oil and water. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes by hand or with the dough hook of a stand mixer, until the dough is smooth, stretchy, and pliable. Proceed with Monkey Bread recipe (above).

FIGHT SPEEDING TICKETS WITH THE NEWLY RELEASED IPHONE APP, ‘TICKETDEFENDER’!

TicketDefender tracks and reports vehicle’s speeds to protect drivers from undeserved speeding tickets. TicketDefender is a newly released iPhone App that enables drivers to protect themselves from undeserved speeding tickets by providing a printed report that shows their vehicle’s GPS speed and location prior to the issuance of a ticket. Police radar makes mistakes, lots of them. In America more than 100,000 people per day receive speeding tickets. Some experts estimate that 10-20% of all radar-backed speeding tickets are issued in error and in the case of radar operated from a moving police vehicle the number of inaccurate tickets may be as high as 30%! Yet, the use of Radar is widely accepted and we naturally assume the technology is reliable1. But good news is just an Apple App away. After a truck driver received one these erroneous speeding tickets, he decided that something had to be done. He presented his idea to a friend who is an engineer, and TicketDefender was born. As a user drives their vehicle TicketDefender automatically records the speed, time of day, and GPS location. If the driver is pulled over for speeding, he simply clicks “Press When Ticketed” to capture the last hour of data and generate the free Speed Report and free Map Report. Instructions for how to print these non-editable, encrypted and watermarked Speed and Map Reports are sent to the driver’s email address. These two reports can be used in court as evidence against wrongfully issued tickets to protect drivers from “the officer’s word against mine” situations. The TicketDefender Speed and Map Reports include the vehicle’s make and model, license number, time and date, the vehicle’s speed recorded every 3-5 seconds and a map showing the vehicle’s location and corresponding speed. If the speed on the TicketDefender report is different from the speed indicated on the ticket, the driver has a valid "not guilty" argument. This report can then be presented in court or with employers in defense of inaccurate speeding tickets. Radar can often clock incorrect vehicle speeds causing an unwarranted ticket, but until the release of TicketDefender there has been no way for drivers to prove that they were driving at a speed that was different from the speed stated on the ticket. TicketDefender can be a valuable tool, both for fighting speeding tickets and for proof of speed at the time of a car accident. TicketDefender is certainly a benefit for any driver or commuter and particularly beneficial for individuals whose livelihood depends on a positive driving record such as truckers, bus and taxi drivers. TicketDefender will track any vehicle in which the phone is located, once the vehicle’s

data has been entered. One TicketDefender download can be used for multiple vehicles including company and family member’s vehicles TicketDefender will also multitask; it continues to track speed and locations while you use the phone and other applications. The one time download of TicketDefender can be used repeatedly to give a lifetime of protection from undeserved or inaccurate speeding tickets. TicketDefender for the iPhone is available at the iTunes store for an introductory price of $1.99. To learn more about this exciting new App visit www.TicketDefender.net.
